Massachusetts swimmer survives great white shark attack

BOSTON (Reuters) - A man mauled in the waters off Massachusetts' Cape Cod was probably bitten by a great white shark, authorities said on Tuesday, the first such attack in the state in 76 years.

Gregory Skomal, a biologist with the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game's Division of Marine Fisheries, told a news conference in Boston that the attack at Ballston Beach in Truro had all the hallmarks of a great white.

Eyewitness accounts of a large fin in the water, the presence of seals in the area, and descriptions of the man's wounds make the injuries likely attributable to a great white, Skomal said.

Christopher Myers was attacked Monday while body-surfing and suffered severe lacerations to his lower legs. He was taken to a hospital on Cape Cod before being transferred to Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital.

Officials at Mass General confirmed that Myers is being treated there, but could not give details on his condition, citing patient confidentiality.

Despite the popularity of the 1975 blockbuster movie "Jaws," set on a fictional island patterned after Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard, the last documented attack by a great white shark in the state was in 1936.

In that instance, 16-year-old Joseph Troy died in surgery after being attacked while swimming at Hollywood Beach in Buzzards Bay.

Skomal said a recent shift in the location of the shark population, in which more sharks now swim closer to shore, made the attack on Myers possible.

"However, only with examination of the injury and direct testimony from the victim will we have 100 percent confirmation," he said.

The Division of Marine Fisheries said they were aware of nine great white sharks off Cape Cod, and have been monitoring and tagging them since 2009.

Researchers theorize that the sharks may be attracted to Massachusetts waters so they can hunt the growing population of gray seals, migrating off the coast, the Division of Marine Fisheries said.

Ballston Beach in Truro, near the northern tip of the Cape, remained open Tuesday, but the town's beach department said they were putting up signs that warned of the possible shark attack and said, "Swim at your own risk."

Obama tightens sanctions on banks helping Iran sell oil

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama announced new U.S. sanctions on Tuesday against foreign banks that help Iran sell its oil and said the measure would increase pressure on Tehran for failing to meet its international nuclear obligations.

Obama's decision, in an executive order, came ahead of congressional votes on new sanctions intended to further strip Iran of its oil-related revenues.

It also followed criticism from Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney that the White House is failing to act strongly enough to stop Iran's suspected pursuit of a nuclear weapon. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

The United States remains committed to finding a diplomatic resolution to the standoff with Tehran, but is also determined to step up the pressure, Obama said in a statement.

"If the Iranian government continues its defiance, there should be no doubt that the United States and our partners will continue to impose increasing consequences," he said.

Obama's new sanctions target foreign banks that handle transactions for Iranian oil or handle large transactions from the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) or Naftiran Intertrade Company (NICO), two key players in Iran's oil trade.

That builds on oil trade sanctions signed into law in December that have prompted buyers in Japan, South Korea, India and China to significantly cut their purchases to avoid penalties.

The new executive order has the same rules, providing "exceptions" to countries that have demonstrated significant cuts.

OIL OFF THE MARKET

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this week that sanctions have not set back Iran's nuclear program "one iota" and that "a strong military threat" was also needed.

But U.S. officials argue that the sanctions are inflicting significant economic pain on Iran and further isolating the country.

Iran's currency has plunged since the United States and European Union first targeted its oil revenues this year, making it harder for Tehran to spend money on its nuclear program, and ramping up internal political pressures within the country, said Ben Rhodes, a national security adviser to Obama.

"The proof of the success of the approach can be seen in the data, that you have up to a million barrels of oil a day that are off the market from last year," Rhodes told reporters.

Obama's order also targets China's Bank of Kunlun and Iraq's Elaf Islamic Bank for providing services to Iranian banks.

"We expect that today's action will have a significant chilling effect on the ability of Kunlun and Elaf to operate anywhere in the world," said David Cohen, the Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, in a briefing with reporters.

The new measures will help curb Iran's efforts to evade U.S. banking and oil sanctions, said Mark Dubowitz, head of the non-profit group Foundation for Defense of Democracies, which pushes for tough sanctions on Iran.

But Dubowitz and other sanctions advocates said more steps are needed to blacklist Iran's energy sector and require countries to further cut their oil purchases.

"There is no reason why President Obama should oppose a full economic blockade of Iran at this point," said Mark Wallace, a former ambassador to the United Nations in the George W. Bush administration, and now head of a pressure group called United Against Nuclear Iran.

SANCTIONS VOTE PLANNED

The U.S. Congress has pushed for additional oil-related sanctions, and late on Tuesday negotiators agreed to a final package that will require the Obama administration to crack down on those who ship or insure Iranian oil cargoes, or who pay for oil using gold.

"The bicameral, bipartisan Iran sanctions bill is a further step in our commitment to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons capability," said Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, who worked on the measures.

Lawmakers said they are prepared to go further if needed. "This legislation and today's executive action are important steps in the right direction, but not the final word on Iran sanctions," said Howard Berman, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

The House is expected to vote on the bill on Wednesday. A Senate vote on the sanctions is expected to happen before Congress breaks at the end of the week for an extended recess.

"In the coming weeks, should the Iranian regime continue to defy the U.N. Security Council and refuse to halt its uranium enrichment activities, we will build a new bipartisan coalition to impose farther-reaching sanctions," Republican Senator Mark Kirk said in a statement.

?I Don't Make Enough to Save? | Budgeting

Four Ways We Talk Ourselves into Financial Disaster

?

You make plenty of money ? enough, at least, to allow you to pay bills, eat, get to work, and save for the future.? You even made a budget once; a neat and attractive Excel spreadsheet that organized and allocated your monthly earnings, down to the penny. You even had spending money left over.? Well, you should have, anyway.

?

But for some reason, no matter how nice and logical that spreadsheet looked, you?re still broke by the end of the month.? In the days leading up to your next paycheck, you routinely find yourself dipping into your steadily dwindling savings account or ? even worse ? breaking out the credit card (you know, the one you swore you would only use for emergencies from now on) to pay for gas and groceries.

?

What gives?

?

People get funny about their finances ? even people who are otherwise smart and responsible.? None of us want to have money problems or debt issues ? but somehow, many of us end up struggling to get by.? In many cases, we have developed habits or ways of thinking about money that end up hurting us, even as we try to do the right thing.

?

Are your destructive financial habits keeping you in debt?? It?s possible ? especially if you?ve ever caught yourself thinking or saying some of these things:

?

Thought #1. ?My next (car/house/TV) will be (bigger/nicer/newer).??

?

Why this is destructive: ?While it?s good to have goals (like, say, saving up for a down payment on a house), there?s also something to be said for simply enjoying what you have.? All too often, we look at what we have and see the defects:? We compare our houses and furniture to ones in we see in home d?cor magazines.? We see our aging, practical four-door sedans and note sadly that they?re not nearly as exciting as the neighbors? brand-spanking new SUV.

?

It has TV sets in the headrests! ?We say.? Why don?t we have that?

?

This constant desire for newer, bigger, nicer things makes it really difficult to save money for the things we actually need ? like money for retirement and a few thousand dollars (in cash!) in case of an unforeseen emergency. ?I?m not saying that you should never have nice things ? but I am saying that it?s good to do a reality check every once in a while.? Appreciate what you have.? True financial responsibility isn?t about having the nicest stuff.

?

Thought #2.? ?I?ll start saving as soon as I make a little more money.?

?

Why this is destructive:? If you don?t start saving now, chances are, you never will.? It?s easy to convince yourself that you just ?can?t afford? to put money into savings ? especially if you don?t make very much.? But the truth is, savings money is absolutely critical ? especially for folks who don?t make a lot to begin with.? Having money in savings can help you deal with emergencies and unexpected expenses.

?

Plus, the sooner you start saving, the sooner saving will become a habit ? so when you do make more money, it?ll be easy to simply increase the amount you set aside.? My advice:? Start saving now ? even if you can only afford to put away, say, $10 or $20 a paycheck. Increase your savings gradually.? You might be surprised by how quickly your money adds up.

?

Thought #3.? ?It?s just coffee.?? ??????

?

Why this is destructive:? Most of us have one or two small vices ? we line up for fancy latte drinks, we download a handful of 99-cent songs from iTunes, we sneak cheap paperbacks or magazines into our grocery carts ? you get the idea.? We tend to ignore these purchases because they?re relatively small.? Five bucks here, three bucks there ? pocket change, really.

?

But the problem with these little purchases is that they can add up fairly quickly.?? The other problem is, because they?re small purchases, we tend to ignore them ? until we realize that we spent an extra $30 at Target ? and that $30 was supposed to pay for gas next week.

?

Again, I?m not saying that you have completely deprive yourself of the little things that you love ? but I am saying that you should be conscious and aware of just how much these purchases add up.? The best way to keep these purchases in check is to budget for them.? Allow yourself one or two small splurges per paycheck ? no more.

?

Thought #4:? ?Everybody has debt ? it?s no big deal.?

?

Why this is destructive:? First of all, when has ?everybody?s doing it? ever been a good reason to do something?? Yes, it does seem like most people have credit card debt ? and chances are, they?ll be paying that debt off for years to come ? at sky-high interest rates.? Second of all, debt is always a big deal.? If you?ve got credit card debt, the worst thing you can do is ignore it or downplay it.

?

If you?ve got a relatively small amount of credit card debt, I?d suggest that you buckle down and pay it off as soon as possible ? and stop using your credit cards completely.? If you?ve got a pretty high amount of debt and you feel overwhelmed, take action ? the worst thing you can do is let your problem spin out of control. ?Contact your credit card lender and ask about your options ? chances are, they?ll be more willing to work with you if you make the first move.? Consider (carefully!) a balance transfer that will give you a lower interest rate.? Take action.

?

What do you think?? Do you have any destructive thoughts to add to the list?? Have you ever talked yourself into making a bad financial decision?? Ever talked yourself out of one?? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Ancient warrior king statue discovered

A newly discovered statue of a curly haired man gripping a spear and a sheath of wheat once guarded the upper citadel of an ancient kingdom's capital.

The enormous sculpture, which is intact from about the waist up, stands almost 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall, suggesting that its full height with legs would have been between 11 and 13 feet (3.5 to 4 m). Alongside the statue, archaeologists found another carving, a semicircular column base bearing the images of a sphinx and a winged bull.

The pieces date back to about 1000 B.C. to 738 B.C. and belong to the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina in what is now southeastern Turkey. They were found at what would have been a gate to the upper citadel of the capital, Kunulua. An international team of archaeologists on the Tayinat Archaeological Project are excavating the ruins.

The Neo-Hittites were a group of civilizations that arose along the eastern Mediterranean after the collapse of the Hittite Empire around 1000 B.C. When the statues were carved, the area was emerging from the Bronze Age and entering into the Iron Age.

The male sculpture boasts a beard and inlaid eyes made of white and black stone. He wears a crescent-shaped pectoral shield on his chest and lion-head bracelets on his arms. On his back, a long inscription records the accomplishments of Suppiluliuma, the name of a king of Patina already known to have banded together with Syrian forces in 858 B.C. to face an invasion by Neo-Assyrians. [ Top 10 Battles for the Control of Iraq ]

The column base stands about 3 feet (1 m) tall, with a diameter of 35 inches (90 centimeters). The column likely stood against a wall, as only the front is decorated with carvings of a winged bull flanked by a sphinx.

The presence of such statues was common in Neo-Hittite royal cities, the researchers said. The newly discovered carvings would have guarded a passageway of gates to the heart of the city.

"The two pieces appear to have been ritually buried in the paved stone surface of the central passageway," Tayinat Project director Tim Harrison, a professor of archaeology at the University of Toronto, said in a statement.

The passageway and gates seems to have been destroyed in 738 B.C., when Assyrian forces conquered the Neo-Hittite city. The area then appears to have been paved over and turned into a courtyard. Archaeologists have also uncovered smashed Neo-Hittite slabs and pillars as well as two carved life-size lions.

Divers earn Canada's 1st medal of London 2012

Jennifer Lukas, CTVOlympics.ca

Canadian diver ?milie Heymans made history on Sunday, partnering with Jennifer Abel to capture her fourth Olympic medal.

Heymans, of St. Lambert, Que., and Abel, of Laval, Que., earned the bronze medal in the women's synchronized 3m springboard competition. The medal is Canada's first of London 2012.

With the performance, Heymans became the first Canadian summer athlete -- as well as the first female diver -- to win four medals at consecutive Olympic Games.

"We really worked very hard for this. We are really happy that it went very well," Heymans told RDSOlympiques on Sunday.?

Heymans earned her first Olympic medal in the 10m synchro event at Sydney 2000. Competing with Anne Montminy, she took silver. In 2004, she added bronze in the same event with Blythe Hartley. Four years ago at Beijing 2008, Heymans won her first individual medal with silver in the women's 10m platform.

Most of Heymans's success has come in the 10m platform events. Following Beijing 2008, Canada's most-decorated diver swapped to the springboard. She partnered with Abel in 2010.

For Abel, 20, and Heymans, 30, the London 2012 turning point occurred?in their fourth round of dives. In fourth-place overall with two dives to go, their biggest challenge loomed: the reverse 2.5 somersault.

"This is the one that I can hit for nines, or the one that I can miss," Abel has said of the dive. "I'm pretty sure that if this dive is going to go well, the rest of my dives are going to be good too."

Six points out of a medal position, Abel and Heymans would need to perform the dive well just to catch the field.?

They very nearly nailed it.?

Heymans over-rotated slightly, causing a slight splash on the entry. But as the scoreboard lit up with 74.70, it became clear that they had done enough.

The Canadian pair edged into third place -- a position they managed to hold over Italians Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape, even through a shaky final dive.

Abel and Heymans began their 2012 season with a silver medal at the 2012 World Cup, but that success did not last. The duo struggled with their consistency for much of the year.

Headed into London, Abel believed they had worked past the trouble.

"We are less nervous, we are having more fun," Abel said. "We're just doing our dives and getting closer to the perfect 10."

Chinese duo Wu Minxia and He Zi were about as close to perfect as possible throughout their own list on Sunday.?China has won a medal in every Olympic synchronized springboard competition since the event's induction in 2000.

Wu and He continued the trend, posting a final score of 346.20. The win marked China's sixth of London 2012 and their third in the pool, after two Chinese swimmers picked up Olympic titles on Saturday evening.

Americans Kelci Bryant and Abby Johnson were second with a score of 321.90, while Heymans and Abel racked up 316.80 points of their own, for third.

"Now we feel the pressure has dropped and right now it's a lot of fun," Heymans said. "I'm really pleased to win this medal with Jennifer."

Both divers are scheduled to compete in the individual springboard competition, beginning Friday. They are both considered medal contenders in the event, but Abel is the reigning World bronze medallist.

Google Attacks Cable Companies By Launching Its Own TV Service

Google is offering Kansas City residents a set-top box for their TVs (above) that allows the search giant to compete directly with cable companies over its own 1 Gbps fiber network. Photo: Google

After months of mystery, Kansas City residents learned today that the first high-speed citywide network built by Google will bring them not just super-fast Internet but full-featured cable-style TV service. Google said in a live announcement Thursday morning that the neighborhoods that rally the most interest will be the first to get hooked up to Google?s fiber-optic lines, which the company says will offer 1 gigabit-per-second downloads and uploads?far faster (Google says 100 times) than the typical broadband connections now in most U.S. homes.

The high speed means Google can compete directly with cable and satellite TV companies. For $120 per month for both TV and internet, residents will get a set-top box that Google says will deliver hundreds of HD channels and tens of thousands of on-demand movies and shows. The service even comes with Google?s Nexus 7 tablet, which will serve as the set-top box?s remote.

Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, together won out over 1,100 other cities to become the testbed for Google?s first big venture into building and owning the physical network consumers use to access the internet. The project, known as Google Fiber, looks like it will give Kansas Citians more leverage in negotiating their monthly cable bills. But beyond the city limits, cable companies and telecoms likely don?t have to worry just yet that the search giant will start spreading its broadband tentacles across the country.

Domestic Long Hair - Zoe - Medium - Adult - Female - Cat

On June 13, 2011 two sisters were relinquished to the Hermitage Cat shelter. Zoe and Chloe were your typical siblings; one outgoing and one painfully shy. Chloe was adjusting to shelter life well and spent a lot of time in the main room of the house greeting guests. Zoe spent her time on a porch avoiding attention. Unfortunately Zoe was also avoiding food. Zoe stopped eating all together and developed Hepatic Lipidosis as a result. In spite of our best efforts Zoe would not eat and she was wasting away as a result. We took her to our Veterinarian at the Humane Society where they determined it was in her best interest to place a feeding tube. In the meantime Chloe was adopted. It wasn????t but a few days before Chloe was returned to the shelter for not eating. When she returned she was already showing subtle signs of Hepatic Lipidosis. We began force feeding her at the shelter. After a few days of this it was obvious that she was not ready to eat on her own. We took her to the veterinarian about a week after we initially took Zoe in. We decided it was in Chloe????s best interest to place a feeding tube for her as well though she was not as bad off as Zoe, yet. Though Zoe had been hospitalized for a week she was still not getting any better. She was being fed through her tube, but continued vomiting. When her sister Chloe was admitted to the Hospital they were placed in a kennel together. This seemed to be the magic touch that Zoe needed to get better. Within four days both cats were starting to eat on their own and were released from the Hospital to go into foster care. Once in foster care the girls thrived. They were spoiled and were served Fancy Feast 3 or 4 times a day. Zoe would still get spooked by strange noises, even someone talking outside the door or window. One night she got spooked and jumped off the bed and landed wrong on her back leg. She limped for a week the poor thing. Now Zoe & Chloe are doing well and have put on weight and Zoe????s fur is starting to grow back. Zoe & Chloe are very sweet, very special girls. They must be adopted together but will make their new family very happy.

Eight Years After Then-State Senator Obama Decried 'Negative Ad Peddlers,' What Kind of Campaign Is He Running?

Eight years ago today, a little known state senator delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, where he delivered an inspiring address.

In that speech, Obama noted that "even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America; there's the United States of America? We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America. In the end, that's what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism, or do we participate in a politics of hope?"

Today, Obama is leading a presidential re-election campaign that relies quite a bit on spin masters and negative ads (his opponent, Mitt Romney, is of course doing the same thing.) The New York Times recently noted that in the TV market of Richmond in battleground state Virginia, "not a single positive presidential campaign message ran on television from June 9 through June 22," according to Kantar Media's Campaign Media Analysis Group. "But attack ads ran 4,504 times."

A different analysis looked at a two-week period ending in July in which Romney aired TV ads around 4,000 times - 94% of which were counted as negative. During that same period, the Obama campaign aired ads approximately 37,000 times, 89% of which attacked his opponent.

What would that state senator think about the campaign being run right now by this president?

"I think that he thinks and we think that the issues that the president talks about all the time, as president and as a candidate, go right to the central concern that the American people have about economic growth and job creation," White House press secretary Jay Carney said today, "about ensuring that the middle class is given a shot to expand, that the squeeze that the middle class has been under now for a decade is relieved, and that there's the right investments made in our economy, in education and infrastructure and innovation?

Continued Carney: "That's why the president believes that the issue of 'What do you believe when it comes to what our tax code should look like?' and whether we should reward companies that ship jobs overseas, or should we reward companies that insource jobs in the United States - that's a policy difference that is extremely important?.The president draws distinctions about his vision for the economy compared to the Republican vision,?this is the absolute core of the debate in our country, and it is overwhelmingly the principal focus of the American people."

An article written by an international group of researchers reports that there is an urgent need to develop formulations of current antiretroviral therapy (ART) treatments suitable for young children, in particular, tablets that are a combination of different HIV drugs, which can be dispersed or crushed and mixed with food or liquids. The article was published in this week's PLoS Medicine. Even though the risk of HIV infection is highest in young children, they also represent the group that is most neglected amongst those affected by the HIV epidemic...

Priorities USA Action Attacks Mitt Romney In Olympics Ad

The Pro-Barack Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action attacks Mitt Romney's record outsourcing jobs and stashing wealth in offshore accounts in a new Olympics-themed ad released Wednesday, two days before the presumptive Republican nominee will attend the opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

?If shafting the middle class were an Olympic sport, Mitt Romney would win the gold,? said Paul Begala, senior adviser for Priorities USA Action, in a statement. ?We all cheer for Team America on the field of play, but Romney has put foreign investment ahead of American jobs. In the global economic competition for jobs, Mitt Romney is not on our side.?

The commercial features footage of Romney during the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, where he was president and CEO. The ad juxtaposes that 2002 nostalgia, which Romney has touted as one of the greatest successes of his career, with clips of teams representing countries where Romney reportedly outsourced jobs at Bain Capital and holds offshore accounts.

The spot also knocks Romney for outsourcing the production of Olympic torchbearer uniforms to Burma when he was at the helm of the 2002 winter games.

The ad will air during the Olympics in battleground states Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and is part of the super PAC's $20 million television and online ad buy focused on Romney's business record and policies.

Nutrition For Health and Fitness | Forever Orange

Nutrition For Health and Fitness

Newly married and planning weekly meals that will take into consideration your husband?s health condition? If he?s overweight and prone to high blood pressure, you can concentrate on diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Nutrition for health and fitness for you and your hubby should be easy to plan, with much help from health journals and online resources, and sound advice from well-meaning friends and relatives.

Unless you have a master?s degree in nutrition, you need all the help you can get by reading as much as you can and also visiting all-natural products stores for quality nutritional supplements. Clinical studies show that regular intake of fish oil supplements can substantially lower blood pressure in individuals with untreated hypertension.

While you?re shopping for premium quality supplements for you and your hubby, you may as well add fiber and chromium.

Fiber supplements like psyllium and chitin can aid your husband?s weight loss efforts as they can let a person feel full and encourage elimination of fat from the body. There are also supplements that combine fat-fighting ingredients formulated to help weight-challenged individuals lose weight the natural way. Proper medical consultation is still essential, though.

Indeed, supplements or actual food sources of omega-3 fatty acids can contribute to longevity. An interesting fact about fish is that nutritional science experts say that for each gram of omega-3 fatty acid-laden fish you eat, you will require around six grams of plant-derived foods (like flaxseed and walnuts) to provide your body the equivalent amount of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). In other words, to reap the health benefits of plant-derived foods, your liver must first convert the alpha-linolenic acid into EPA and DHA.

Before anything else though, you and your husband should confront unhealthy eating habits like crash diets & binge drinking.

Study shows that binge alcohol drinking may pose harmful effects on blood pressure levels. If you must drink during social occasions, opt for red wine, as it has resveratrol, which has been linked to better health.

In addition, as you and your husband become more fit and healthy, you should start a doctor recommended fitness plan to further improve your blood pressure and level of weight loss. Working out on a regular basis involves taking supplements that help your muscles recover faster and work harder, so that you get a bigger benefit from the workouts.

As for helping your husband shed extra pounds, try spicing up your daily meals with cayenne, ginger, and cinnamon to boost his metabolic rate. Consume green tea, also, which contains antioxidant catechins that can bolster nutrition for health and fitness. Let your hubby enjoy a cup after every meal as part of planning nutrition for health and fitness.

British PM hosts Brazil's president for Olympic talks

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff held talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday to pick up some tips on staging the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Welcoming Rousseff to his Downing Street residence in London, Cameron said the Olympic connection provided a "great opportunity" for cooperation between Brazil and Britain.

Rousseff is among 120 national leaders expected to attend the opening ceremony of the London Games on Friday.

Cameron said he also wanted to deepen trade ties between Britain and Latin America's dominant power, which overtook Britain this year to become the world's sixth largest economy.

Trade between the two countries was worth ?5.52 billion ($8.57 billion, 7.05 billion euros) in 2011, an increase of just over 10 percent on the previous year.

"Obviously we have good opportunities for wide-ranging discussions but also the chance to talk about the Olympics here in London and the Olympics to come in your country next," Cameron said.

"It's going to be a great opportunity for cooperation between Britain and Brazil."

The pair discussed the eurozone crisis and the global economy with Cameron pressing the case for continued liberalisation of trade between Brazil and the European Union, according to a Downing Street statement.

The two leaders also agreed on the need for international cooperation to tackle Iran's nuclear programme and also to end the crisis in Syria, the statement added.

Rousseff said: "This is a special moment in time for Brazil-UK relations because Brazil will be the next country to host the Olympic Games in 2016.

"It's our intention to learn lessons from the successful UK experience."

The GOP?s Self-Inflicted Wounds?

It?s possible, then, that if Pennsylvania?s voter ID law goes into effect, there will be a lot of angry white, Republican, suburban voters turned away in November along with black Democrats like Viviette Applewhite. None of this makes voter ID laws one whit better. As drafted, with maximum hassle and zero proof that they?re preventing real fraud, they?re a scourge on our democracy, which is battered enough already. In general, they do burden minority and poor voters more than others, which should be the opposite of a selling point. And restrictive voting laws are in effect in other states where the presidential election could be close, including Florida, Iowa, and Ohio.

Learning How To Become A New Person

To stay true to your goals, enlist the help of a friend or join an online support group. It helps to have support from people who are going through the same thing. You will be surprised how much an ?atta boy? or ?way to go? can lift your spirits and keep you motivated through rough patches.

Educate yourself. Reading books is a great way to keep your mind exercised as you work towards your self-improvement goals. You can find classic books on the subject of self-help, but even reading books about your country?s history or your favorite hobby can do wonders. Not only will you gain knowledge, but your mind will also remain sharp.

When trying to cope with depression, try turning to people you trust, like friends and family members. Share with them what it is that you?re going through. Ask them for the support and help that you need. Despite making yourself a bit of a recluse, you can get through this rough time with some love and help.

Most people don?t make an effort to nag others ? it just comes naturally. Unfortunately, nagging can have quite the opposite effect: building resentment and sacrificing productivity. You may find that your requests can be summed up tidily in an one-word reminder instead of a long rant about how angry you will be if your spouse forgets to pick up milk at the store. You might shorten it to a single word: ?Milk!? Even though this is a minor change it can get to the point very quick.

Personal development is hard work, so remember to recharge your personal battery. Take time to be with yourself. Exercising is an excellent way to clear your mind of the stress of day to day life, and allows you to practice self-discipline. You?ll feel better about yourself and build greater endurance to get through your day!

Identify your current strengths before you try to change your perceived weaknesses. A key component of personal development is having a true understanding of your whole self. Unfortunately, personal development often focuses only on weaknesses. Often, improving an already developed strength may be more helpful to achieving your long-term goals.

Take time out of your busy day to listen to what your mind and your body are trying to tell you. If you stop for a little while each day, you are going to find that there are many things that your body is telling you that you were not hearing before, and you can make changes to improve the situation.

For many people, retreating from a conflict is the standard response. Unfortunately, this habit does nothing to resolve the problem or prevent similar issues in the future. Try to practice keeping yourself in the conflict while continuing to engage the other party with questions that can help to resolve the problem. Unlike simply retreating and giving someone the famous ?cold shoulder?, this approach forces you to work through your concerns and avoid creating further resentment.

Try new things. It is important to never be afraid to try things that are new and exciting. Expand your horizons. Pick up a new hobby or skill. Travel as much and as often as you can and expose yourself to different cultures. The more you know about the world, the more you can evolve as a person.

Try to make time to socialize. You should not sacrifice your social and family life for work, pain or anxiety. Getting a break to relax with people you like to be around can really do wonders for you. It can refresh and recharge you so that you can accomplish much more. You may even get some pointers while you?re chatting with other people.

Carry yourself with pride. Personal development may be an intimate process, but you will find yourself walking with more confidence if you present a cohesive image to the world around you. Trying on new ways to project your true self allows you to toy with self-expression and builds your self confidence in the process.

While re-planning your life seems like a lot of fun, you should feel better that you know how to do it. You can now apply your newly acquired knowledge to making positive changes to live your life and to become a better person. Now is the perfect time for you to change things.

I believe that this has been a good choice for info on what to say to your ex to get him back, and indeed you will discover more on video itself at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrYWusm8UCo, why not go there now and check them out.

Govt inaction hurts the disabled | Sunshine Coast Health | Fitness ...

A FORMER AFL star, appalled by politicians' failure to commit to a national disability scheme, has challenged them to spend "24 hours in hell".

Disability campaigner Peter Yeo

A FORMER AFL star, appalled by politicians' failure to commit to a national disability scheme, has challenged them to spend "24 hours in hell" as a severely disabled person unable to move or care for themselves.

Noosa-based disability campaigner Peter Yeo said the failure of the Prime Minister Julia Gillard and state and territory leaders to agree to National Disability Insurance Scheme would leave thousands of Sunshine Coast families waiting years more for help.

Mr Yeo, who runs the ZeroPoint5 Foundation, broke his spine at home after slipping on a wooden floor answering his mobile phone. He was there for 26 hours before anyone found him.

He said he wanted politicians at all levels to learn firsthand what it was like to be a high-level quadriplegic, totally reliant on a carer to move them, wash them and get them to the toilet.

"If there was a fire in my place I can't move. I would just have to watch the fire come and burn me up," he said.

He said Coast families with disabilities were waiting two years just to get a response from politicians after pleading for help.

"There are so many young people on the Sunshine Coast living in aged-care facilities. It is disgusting."

Mr Yeo recently held a rally in Brisbane where he was expecting 200. Instead more than 5000 turned up.

"People are really hurting," he said.

"The politicians don't understand. I want them to spend 24 hours in hell to go through everything that we go through."

Mr Yeo said he did not accept arguments from Premier Campbell Newman that there was not enough money to fund a disability insurance scheme.

He was particularly appalled with the PM following yesterday's meeting of state and territory leaders.

"The Prime Minister has failed to rise above partisanship, only reaching mates deals with Labor states for NDIS launch sites. This is a farce," Mr Yeo said.

"The Federal Government is clearly not serious about the NDIS when none of Australia's three largest states have been included for launch sites."

?

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME

On average, every 30 minutes someone in Australia is diagnosed with a significant disability.

But as families have discovered, there is cruel lottery where the services and support people with disability, their families and carers receive depends on where they live, what disability they have, and how they attained that disability.

The number of people with a severe and profound disability on the Sunshine Coast is estimated at 10,700.

Police look for boater in missing Iowa girls case

Facebook.com/missingcases

Elizabeth Collins, left, and Lyric Cook went missing in Evansdale, Iowa on Friday, July 13. The girls, ages 8 and 10, are cousins.

By Ryan J. Foley, Associated Press

After submitting to a second polygraph test, the mother of one of two missing Iowa cousins said Monday the results should prove that she had nothing to do with their disappearance and allow investigators to focus their attention elsewhere.

Misty Cook-Morrissey said a state agent asked during Monday's polygraph whether she had anything to do with the abduction of her daughter, 10-year-old Lyric Cook-Morrissey, and niece, 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins. She said she was asked whether she knows where they are and if she could take investigators to them, adding she answered "no" to all those questions.

"It went well," she said in a phone interview afterward. "They can rule me out of their book and move on to something else."

The girls have been missing since they went for a bike ride July 13 in Evansdale, a town of 4,700 people in northeast Iowa, where their bikes and a purse were found near a lake. An extensive investigation involving local, state and federal agents has failed to find them.

Investigators say they have reason to believe the girls were abducted and remain alive, but they will not elaborate. They ruled out the possibility that the girls died in Meyers Lake after an FBI team used sonar equipment to search the bottom.

At a press conference Monday, chief deputy Captain Rick Abben said evidence indicating the girls are alive was sent to the state crime lab.

FBI spokeswoman Sandy Breault said Monday that investigators want to interview a person who was paddleboating on the lake around the time the girls disappeared. She said that person, who has not voluntarily come forward, could help investigators learn what happened to the girls but was not considered a suspect.

Breault declined comment on Cook-Morrissey's polygraph test.

Investigators have been delving into the background of Cook-Morrissey and her estranged husband, Dan Morrissey, who have both spent time in prison on methamphetamine-related charges. The two faced additional scrutiny last week when they announced they had been advised by an attorney to stop cooperating with investigators. A judge last week ordered Morrissey to be monitored by state parole agents while he awaits trial on charges of making and dealing meth that could lock him up for decades.

The couple's temporary lack of cooperation with police caused friction with Heather and Drew Collins, Elizabeth's parents. Police had also repeatedly called it a distraction in recent days and called for total cooperation.

Cook-Morrissey said she'd declined to cooperate after she was treated harshly during a polygraph test last week in which she was accused of taking the girls, but agreed Monday after investigators promised to take a different approach and allow a relative to be nearby.

Cook-Morrissey, 34, said she was told she passed Monday's test after last week's came back inconclusive. She said the examinations were stressful for her since she has anxiety disorder, which made it hard to stay calm and may have contributed to the earlier inconclusive result.

Cook-Morrissey said Monday's test and a meeting afterward with investigators over doughnuts went a long way toward easing tensions between her family and the police.

"You could say we made peace today," she said. "We looked at some pictures. We talked. It went really well. I think they are trying a lot harder than I was feeling the last few days."

Cook-Morrissey said investigators did not share any new information with her about why they believe the girls are alive, but told her they were confident the case would be resolved.

She said she also met Monday morning with the Collins' family. She called tension within the family as "very normal" in a case where relatives have fear and stress but no answers about what happened.

A spokesman for the Collins' family, Craig Ceilly, emphasized that Heather and Drew Collins have been "cooperating 300 percent from day one" with investigators as they live through what he called their worst nightmare.

"Anything they can do to help they will do and they are doing willingly. I cannot speak for Dan and Misty," he said. "I don't know what they are doing. I don't have a clue, nor do Heather and Drew. They don't want to know. All of a sudden when the media started looking at their past, it took a turn for the worse."

3INVEST & Guardian Newspaper present Real Estate Unite ...

African music sensation 2Face Idibia, top Nigerian comedian Ali Baba ?and multi-award winning artist and photographer Kelechi Amadi-Obi are set to hit the Civic Centre Stage in September for the most prestigious real estate awards in Nigeria ? Real Estate Unite Conference and Awards, Lagos 2012.

The event organised by 3Invest Limited ? a real estate marketing, media and advocacy company, is designed to bridge the gap between business and entertainment. It is a platform structured to open up the potentials ?of Nigeria?s real estate to an otherwise passive audience who sees the industry as uneventful and uninteresting.

According to Ruth Obih (Managing Director/CEO of 3 Invest Ltd.), real estate is serious business, which has to be made interesting to attract the right people. She further stressed that the huge statistics about real estate on the pages of papers are boring and tiring. Hence, there must be a ?way to trend the sector for global investment.

?3 Invest Limited? Bringing Innovation to Real Estate?. Since coming into the market in 2007, 3Invest limited has greeted the scene with stunning innovations that has not just raised the profile of the sector , but armed the public with information crucial to investment decisions. With its radio show, Real Estate on Air on Classic FM and Beat FM, 3Invest has earned a reputation of quality and standard. The Real Estate Unite Award is therefore a product of innovation and years of?research.

Real Estate On Air is the first Nigerian syndicated Real Estate radio show, which as in the past year of its inception has been in the vanguard of agenda setting and opinion moulding in all aspects of Nigerian Real estate. Real Estate Unite has at separate times been endorsed by Ali Baba, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD) and?2Face Idibia who spoke about the radio show saying ?There comes a time in life when you have to face certain reality and the major reality is to invest wisely, invest in real estate, so me oo, I listen to real estate on air brought to you by 3Invest, I recommend you listen, One Love?

Ruth Obih

Real Estate On Air is anchored by Ruth Obih (Managing Director, 3Invest Limited and Initiator of Real Estate Unite, Awards). According to her, ?The Real Estate Unite Awards plans?to be the most prestigious in the industry. What we plan to do is to use the awards to recognize, appreciate and celebrate performance in the industry. Also, we also want to use the dinner as a wind up to the event so that people who have discussed the various challenges about the sector can have time to network, relate and unwind.

The best way to predict the future is to create it. Real Estate is the future of Nigeria?s economy. Whenever we talk of being an economically viable nation in 2020, we must always remember to talk real estate. Real Estate has proven itself in countries like Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and so on. So there is a future for the sector. What we are doing as an advocacy company is to attract more people, especially young Nigerians to come and drive the sector with their creativity and strength. We want to organise an event that will not just come and go but one that will be on the lips of everyone ? an event that we can all look up to annually.

So the awards night is a sort of an entertainment side to real estate business. Those who attend can be refreshed by the performances of our guest artistes for the night as well as get an insight about the industry, witness what has stood the awardees out and get encouraged to be in the circles. Real Estate has proven to be an answer to the prayers of unemployment, wealth creation, and economic development in other countries. Nigeria can also benefit from the huge potentials of the sector. We have the land, we have the people, we have all it takes, all we need to do is strategize on how to jumpstart the sector and a significant part of our national problem will be solved?, she concluded.

Details on the?Real Estate Unite Conference and Awards, Lagos 2012.
In its quest to make Nigeria?s Real Estate occupy its rightful place in the economic scheme of things, 3Invest Limited ? organizer of Real Estate Unite Conference and Awards ? a multi-faceted real estate event billed for September, has announced the commencement of award nominations for Real Estate Player and organisations in Nigeria.

The awards which wind up the two day event, is designed to recognise, appreciate and celebrate performance in the real estate industry, according to Ruth Obih.

She further said,?it is common knowledge that the Real Estate Industry in Nigeria is yet to be explored to its full potentials. However, Obih believes that those whose operations and activities have contributed and sustained the marginal growth in the sector should be recognized and appreciated for their dedication, resilience and practices. ?Awards all over the world are sources of motivation to encourage performance and stimulate growth. People must aspire and awards are instruments of aspiration and healthy competition. So if we say our industry is not yet matured for it, we might be shooting ourselves in the foot by discouraging performance and signalling to new entrants that anything goes in our industry?.?So for us, we discovered that the industry has been silent in this regards and we have resolve not just to reward performance through the awards but show to the world and other sectors in global economy that the Real Estate industry, notwithstanding the its current status, has huge potentials and that the industry players are working assiduously to lift the sector?.

The 25 category awards segment covers all categories of players in the sector, from core real estate practices in development and construction to services such as finance, manufacturing, design and a host of other real estate activities.?It is designed as a carefully managed process of identification, nomination, screening, adjudging and recognition aimed at engendering healthy competition in the quest to make Nigeria a conducive and habitable haven for investment, living and business. According to Obih, Nominations and adjudication for the awards will be on innovation and creativity that translates to economic development, wealth creation, environmental sustainability and demonstrable public good.??The Real Estate Unite Awards aims to provide an opportunity to encourage promote and recognise spectrum of talents, achievements and excellence in the Nigerian Real Estate Sector. With these awards, we seek to expose the entire world to the huge potential in Nigeria. It is also an opportunity to recognize and showcase the same people and organizations who have concluded significant real estate and housing finance deals?.In the finance category,, financial institutions will compete for the Most Active Private Equity Firm in Nigeria and Most active Mortgage Lending Institution.?In Development, the industry will recognise Estate Developer of the Year, Outstanding Development of the Year, Affordable Development of the Year, Best PPP in Housing?and Hotel Development of the Year. While in management category awards will be given to Real Estate Insurance Company, Valuation Company and Facility Management Firms.?While in Marketing and Media, the recognition covers Marketing Company of the Year and Most Outstanding real estate Portal.Nominations are open to individuals and organisations who meet the criteria which are available on the event website www.3InvestOnline.com/RealEstateUnite.
