Shark-Tooth Weapons Reveal Lost Biodiversity

Three shark species once found in the central Pacific Ocean are now missing, a study of swords, tridents and other weapons reveals

Weapons from the Gilbert Islands contain the teeth of shark species no longer found in the area. Image: J. Drew/Columbia Univ.

From of Nature magazine

For centuries, the people of the Gilbert Islands in the central Pacific Ocean have crafted weapons from shark teeth. Joshua Drew, a conservation biologist at Columbia University in New York, has used these teeth to show that the waters around the islands ? part of the Republic of Kiribati ? were once home to three species of shark that no longer live in the area.

?This is shadow biodiversity,? said Drew, presenting his results at the 2012 Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon, last week. ?Three sharks disappeared from these reefs before we even knew that they existed there.?

Drew analysed 124 shark-tooth weapons housed in the collection of the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois. The artefacts included swords, tridents and a 4-metre-long lance, dating back over 120 years. All are built in the same way: the islanders drill hole in the teeth and lash them to buttresses of wood with cords made from coconut leaves. All the teeth in one weapon usually come from one species, but Drew found several blades in which the penultimate tooth belonged to a rare species of blue shark (Prionace glauca) ? possibly the signature of a single artisan.

Sharks can be identified from their teeth, so these weapons provide a clear record of the species that once swam around the Gilbert Islands. Drew used field guides and high-resolution photos to identify the teeth. ?If there was any ambiguity,? he says, ?I just dropped down to the ichthyological holdings, pulled out the species I was looking at and literally got the answer from the shark?s mouth.?

Lost species
Drew found that the teeth in the weapons came from 19 species of shark, and that three of these ? the spottail shark (Carcharhinus sorrah), dusky shark (Carcharhinus obscurus) and bignose shark (Carcharhinus altimus) ? are no longer found in waters close to the islands. The spottail and dusky sharks were among the four species most commonly used to make the weapons, but records suggest that they are no longer found within a few thousand kilometres of the Gilbert Islands.

It is unlikely that the teeth of these three missing species were brought in by trade. Sharks feature heavily in the Gilbert Islanders? culture and were already being fished locally when the weapons were made. ?There is no ethnographic, linguistic or archaeological evidence for long-distance trade with people who now live in the areas where the sharks are found,? says Drew.

It is not clear why the species vanished but Drew says it is ?absolutely possible that humans had a role in these declines?. Shark-finning ? the practice of hunting sharks for their fins alone, which kills sharks in much greater bulk than ordinary fishing ? was first recorded in the area in 1910. However, by that time the practice was probably already well established.

Sean Connolly, a marine ecologist at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia, says that historical studies such as Drew's are crucial, because there is a lack of good ecological data on shark populations before humans started to change the oceans significantly. ?Such data are essential for the reconstruction of realistic ecological baselines against which we can compare the current status of the world?s marine ecosystems,? he says.

?When we set up modern conservation plans, we shouldn?t sell ourselves short,? says Drew. ?We might not recapture the vivid splendour of those super-rich levels, but this information argues for setting up management plans to protect what sharks are there.?

First woman to moderate presidential debate in 20 years

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - CNN's Candy Crowley will become the first woman in 20 years to moderate a presidential debate when she questions President Barack Obama and his Republican rival Mitt Romney in October.

The cable network's chief political correspondent is set to lead one of three debates before the November 6 general election, the bipartisan Commission on Presidential Debates said on Monday.

"I am wowed, amazed and excited by the opportunity to moderate a 2012 presidential debate," Crowley said.

The move follows a recent push for a female moderator since ABC's Carole Simpson in 1992. The commission made no mention of the gender milestone in making its announcement, only the moderators' expertise.

"These journalists bring extensive experience to the job of moderating, and understand the importance of using the expanded time periods to maximum benefit," the commission's co-chairmen Frank Fahrenkopf and Michael McCurry said.

Several female U.S. lawmakers and other women's groups pressed for a newswoman to lead a debate after three New Jersey teen-aged girls began an online petition at Change.org. The girls also called on Romney and Obama, a Democrat, for support.

"It is long past due to have a woman on the same stage as the men running for president," one of the girls, Sammi Siegel, wrote online. Their petition drew 170,000 signatures, several lawmakers said earlier this month.

Other debate moderators include PBS Newshour's Jim Lehrer on October 3 and CBS News' Bob Schieffer on October 22. Both have led several past presidential debates. ABC News' Martha Raddatz will moderate the October 11 debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Romney's running-mate U.S. Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

5 Steps To Buying Used Car

Shopping for a BMW is a big decision even though it's a pre-owned one. You need to find solutions to many questions to purchase that fantastic set of BMW wheels. To make the buying method less difficult, we've listed a couple of essential things you should consider.

1. Be well prepared

Even before you step into a auto dealer, conduct as much research as you possibly can so that you never regret your decision later on . Read consumer reports and even automobile reviews; ask friends as well as fellow workers, get gas usage plus maintenance info on the BMW model you love. If possible, try and narrow the search to a number of models which fit your standards. You must know what you're letting yourself in for before you sign on the dotted line.

2. Assess the information

A history record is the best means of assessing the condition of a vehicle.

This can help to get rid of cars with potential problems - rolled back odometers, excellent liens, heavy abuse - or even cars that have been involved in serious accidents. Actually, you ought not even be test driving a car till you've got examined its history. When inspecting the used BMW's information won't assure the car is in excellent condition, its worth spending a small sum for a history report when you're planning to pay thousands of dollars for the car.

3. Don't believe all things the dealer says to you

Don't invest in the used BMW because you have been told its in best condition. Check it out for yourself or take a knowledgeable person along. Many of the tell tale signs of used car fraud are noticeable in the interiors, the hood, the odometer and moreover the tires.

Prior to sealing the offer, have a trustworthy mechanic to check the car for you. And never ever pay out a penny or sign the papers before the vehicle passes the examination.

4. Pay attention to the documents

Don't relax only because the car seems Okay. Check out the paperwork very carefully to eliminate potential problems. These could well be authorized liens against the BMW; or maybe the person that's selling the car might not be the actual owner. A fast check with the Vehicle Registration Authorities will advise you whether or not the car has been stolen. If you are buying from a BMW dealer, read all the documents, including the warranty policy, closely. Though it's a "Certified pre-owned BMW you're shopping for, it'd be wiser to check the products for which it was approved.

5. Price versus value

Purchasing the cheapest pre-owned BMW may not give you the best value for your money. Your plan ought to be to find a affordable pre-owned BMW in good condition. When we all love deals, do remember that there is no such thing as "cheap BMW in wonderful condition." When they are requesting less than the car is worth, you need to need to be suspicious. Set up a definite limit for the amount you can afford to pay for for the BMW and moreover negotiate with the dealer for a discount.

Keep to the above guidelines and you will never ever be sorry for your choice to buy a second-hand BMW. Apart from above mentioned things simply shopping for pre-owned BMW from any dealer wont conduct. In order to find the best bargain on pre-owned BMW visit your local BMW dealer or even stop by Chapman BMW on Camelback, Phoenix BMW dealer.

Toys"R"Us? Raises Nearly $1.9 Million During Nationwide ...

Company Drives Awareness, Encourages Customers to Join the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer Through Impactful Social Media Campaign and In-Store Events

August 13, 2012 // Franchising.com // Wayne, NJ ? Toys"R"Us? today announced that it collected nearly $1.9 million during its second consecutive nationwide fundraising and awareness campaign benefiting Alex?s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for childhood cancer. In support of the company?s philanthropic mission to help kids in times of need, from June 1 through July 31, Toys"R"Us and Babies"R"Us?customers were encouraged to ?Help Fight Childhood Cancer, One Cup at a Time? by making a donation in-store or online, or by signing up to host an official Alex?s Lemonade Stand. Donations made during this year?s campaign will help ALSF find better treatments and ? ultimately ? a cure for pediatric cancer.

?We cannot thank the Toys"R"Us family ? and their customers ? enough for their overwhelming enthusiasm and response in support of this year?s campaign,? said Liz Scott, Co-Executive Director of Alex?s Lemonade Stand Foundation and mother of Alex Scott, who inspired the charity that bears her name. ?It was our daughter?s mission to help kids like her, and through this partnership, we?ve been able to raise even more awareness and incredible funds for the cause, taking a tremendous leap in the fight against childhood cancer.?

ALSF was inspired by Alexandra ?Alex? Scott, who fought cancer until she was 8 years old. Alex hosted front-yard lemonade stands to raise money for kids like her, and in 2005, her parents Liz and Jay Scott established ALSF to continue what Alex had started. Through funding pediatric cancer research projects, establishing resources to assist families affected by cancer and encouraging kids to help other kids in need by hosting front-yard lemonade stands, the organization continues to work toward Alex?s mission of finding a cure. To date, Alex?s legacy has helped raise nearly $55 million for the cause.

?For a second consecutive year, our customers and employees across the country showed an incredible commitment to our campaign benefiting Alex?s Lemonade Stand Foundation,? said Sloane Lucas, Director, Corporate Philanthropy, Toys"R"Us, Inc. ?The simple, yet powerful, act of hosting a lemonade stand, and the story behind ALSF, has definitely struck a chord. At Toys"R"Us, we understand the importance of helping kids in times of need and hope that each dollar raised will help Alex?s dream of finding a cure for childhood cancer become a reality.?

Toys"R"Us engaged fans and followers of its official social media channels, through which the company shared viral video messages highlighting extraordinary examples of kids helping kids, encouraged users to share virtual cups of lemonade, shared photos of in-store Alex?s Lemonade Stands and more. To further support the organization, the company invited ALSF ?Heroes? and supporters to host official Alex?s Lemonade Stands in select stores across the country, during which they shared their personal connection to ALSF and encouraged customer donations.

To jumpstart this year?s campaign, the Toys"R"Us Children?s Fund, a public charity affiliated with Toys"R"Us, Inc.,provided a $100,000 grant to ALSF. Since the partnership began in 2011, donations from customers, Toys"R"Us and the Toys"R"Us Children?s Fund together have provided more than $3.9 million to theorganization.

NLQ FAQ Revisited: Are Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar ?Quiverfull??

by Hopewell

Q: Are the Duggars Quiverfull?

By their own admission, Jim-Bob and Michelle were so ?grieved? after reading the information pamphlet in a birth control pill package that they turned their fertility over to God. (?About Us? para.1 See also, Dallas News).? That decision has been the reason for their incredible family size of 19 children.

Recently the media has offered several profiles of just who are ?Quiverfull? families.

Increasingly, the presence of such large, ideologically driven families is being documented through the medium of the age: reality TV shows and lifestyle cable channel specials, all of which campily depict Quiverfull life as like regular motherhoood, but amplified ? more kids, more laundry, more merriment.??

The most famous of these families, Michelle Duggar and her husband, Jim Bob?. ?Their fame sprouts primarily from their novelty: in 2008 Michelle Duggar was pregnant with her eighteenth child so far. ??So far? is a ubiquitous phrase in the movement? that cutely restates a Quiverfull family?s continuing trust in God?s control of the womb. ?But such theological underpinnings are glossed over to make room for the novel details of large family life. (Joyce,?Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement, pp 138-139).

Does the decision to trust God and not birth control in their family planning alone qualify them as Quiverfull? Yes. Here?s why:

The Duggars wrote:

As conservative Christians, we believe every life is sacred, even the life of the unborn. Due to our lack of knowledge, we destroyed the precious life of our unborn child. We prayed and studied the Bible and found a host of references that told us God considered children a gift, a blessing, and a reward. (FAQ #2 para. 3).

Among that ?host of Bible references? is Pslam 127, verses 3?5, the verse on which the Quiverfull movement has been built:

?

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD:
and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man;
so are children of the youth.
Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them:
they shall not be ashamed,
but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate
. (Pslam 127:3-5 K.J.V.)

The website www.Quiverfull.com says ?We exalt Jesus Christ as Lord, and acknowledge His headship in all areas of our lives, including fertility.?(para.1). Mary Pride, a founder of the Quiverfull school of thought has written: ?Family planning is the mother of abortion,? (Mary Pride, The Way Home, quoted in Newsweek, para. 4).

The Duggars frequently speak out about ?causing? Michelle?s miscarriage by the use of birth control pills. They also adhere to Biblically-based abstinence for a set number of days following the birth of a boy or girl. This also supposedly ties in to the teaching of the Institute for Basic Life Principles, the pseudo-Christian organization founded by Bill Gothard. Gothard teaches couples to only have intercourse when the woman is at her ?fertile? time each month.

Even breast feeding, which can be a barrier to conception is not to be prolonged for this reason. Back when the couple had a mere 13 children, Jim-Bob was quoted in the New York Times as saying? he had ?14 [children], really, since my wife is pregnant and life begins at conception?.? (New York Times, para. 11).? An admission of such beliefs by a politician in a paper with worldwide circulation can only mean one thing: He believes it.

The Quiverfull idea began in the backlash against feminism. Mary Pride?s book The Way Home and a book? A Full Quiver by Rick and Jan Hess are most frequently cited as giving birth to the Quiverfull lifestyle. Both reject birth control. These books, with the Bible, and often the teachings of Bill Gothard?s Institute of Basic Life Principles and materials from the dominionist Patriarch group, Vision Forum, constitute the ?How-To? manuals for prospective Quiverfull couples. (Joyce, Nation, p. 11).

The Duggars have been eager and thorough students.

On their?TV show, Michelle has always said ?children are like flowers, you can?t have too many flowers.? Jim-Bob frequently has said that he leaves the decision of having another child up to Michelle?..but is that true? In Gothardite families the husband is the undisputed leader of the family. ?[W]omen live within stringently enforced doctrines of wifely submission and male headship,? (Kathryn Joyce?- Quiverfull Book, para. 1).?? If he wants to have sexual relations the wife says ?yes.? Since the wife is not able to use birth control or to refuse her husband is the decision to have another child really hers? Would he really forgo his pleasure if she said she couldn?t handle having another child? Maybe. Certainly in other times men have made such a decision.

Today, with birth control the norm, we find it hard to believe. Many a Catholic couple of years gone by have lived out a platonic marriage? at least until the wife?s child bearing years have ended. Given the frequent, enthusiastic kissing and other shows of affection on their?TV show though,?it is doubtful?that he would agree to a platonic life. Given their fervent belief in the rightness of allowing God to control their fertility and that they clearly see??that a woman?s constant sexual availability to her husband is not only her wifely ?duty,? but also at the heart of her ?ministry? as a believing Christian???(Byrnes, T A?(Summer 2009).?Patriarchy: the glue that holds the culture war together.??Conscience,?30,?2.?p.52(2).

I doubt that a platonic marriage will ever exist between Mr. and Mrs. Duggar.

??Our bodies are meant to be a living sacrifice,? write the Hesses. Or, as Mary Pride, in another of the movement?s founding texts, The Way Home: Beyond Feminism, Back to Reality, puts it, ?My body is not my own.? This rebuttal of the feminist health text Our Bodies, Ourselves is deliberate.? (Joyce, Nation, p. 11).

One reviewer recounts Kathryn Joyce?s relentless documentation of the Quiverfull lifestyle?s???pretty distasteful practices? including early arranged marriages; constant pregnancy and childbirth; absolute female submission to male authority, whether in the person of a father, a brother, a husband or most cringe-inducing, a self-appointed pastor. Joyce recounts story after story of girls being raised for submission?.. ((Byrnes, T A?(Summer 2009).?Patriarchy: the glue that holds the culture war together.??Conscience,?30,?2.?p.52(2).

Joyce herself has defined Quiverfull families thus: ?Quiverfull parents try to have upwards of six children. They home-school their families, attend fundamentalist churches and follow biblical guidelines of male headship??Father knows best??and female submissiveness.? (Joyce, Nation, p. 11).

Do the math on this alone and the Duggars add up to 100% Quiverfull.

Another aspect of the Duggar?s life that speaks plainly to being Quiverfull is the isolated life-style they have chosen and which they show us on their?TV program. (I am told this, and their religious beliefs, were made very clear in the original airing of ?14 Kids and Pregnant? which has since been re-edited. I have only seen the re-released version.) The family generally does?everything together. Friends are discouraged except from like-minded families and in fully supervised settings. Children are not allowed to enroll in sports leagues or other activities that ?disrupt? family life. The individual never comes before the family and reflects the Duggars oft-repeated maxim ?Jesus first, others second, yourself last.?

When the Duggars made a rare made-for-TV-appearance at a local elementary school this was well illustrated: all of the Duggar children in attendance were below or above the age appropriate to the school. When one of the eldest girls was asked to recommend a favorite book to the children, she struggled to come up with a Quiverfull-favorite ?Before You Meet Prince Charming: A Guide to Radiant Purity? by Sarah Mally?a book wildly inappropriate to the age and setting.

While we have seen the Duggars go to ?broomball,? (a sport few have even heard of) they naturally went as a family and while there were a few outsiders on the ice, their interactions were very stiff at best. The ?friends? we have been introduced to on ?16/17/18/19 Kids and Counting? are all like-minded and most are openly members of Bill Gothard?s ATI/IBPL organizations. While we have been told the Duggars participate in home church (often another tell-tale sign of Quiverfull life) we have not been introduced to all the families. This leads me to believe that all may not be members of ATI, but are simply ?like minded.?

The Duggar children have been shown to be clueless of such things as the rules of baseball or why Dolly Parton is famous.? They knew only that ?Miss Dolly? promotes reading and likes kids! Right?. There are no minorities visible in their lives, although that is not a-typical of white middle class families in suburban and rural areas. Finally how many ?average? teenagers would ask for quotes from ?the Founding Fathers? to adorn their bedroom walls or to share a bedroom with siblings ranging in age from birth to 18? Probably none?outside of those educated in revisionist Christian Dominionist history and born into a Quiverfull family?!

On the?TV special ?16 Kids and Moving In? we met the Holt family. Jim Holt is a long-time friend of Jim-Bob and is also active in Arkansas politics. His similarly large family had been linked to the Duggars publically thru their ?fellowship? gatherings and thru broomball at the local rink. Duggar and Holt campaigned for each other as well. In the show the children are shown mingling and talking with the adults?evidence of how well ?socialized? they are compared to public school kids who spend all day with age-mates. Mysteriously, the friendship cooled after the Duggars?TV shows began.

There have been unconfirmed rumors that the eldest Duggar child, Joshua, was ?betrothed? to one of the Holt girls, but that betrothal never went forward into marriage, possibly due to some transgression of rules by Joshua Duggar. (Google ?Duggar ? sin in the camp.?)

Another family, the Forsyths, own Fort Rock Family Camp and were featured an the episode in which we were invited along on a Father/Daughter camping retreat. While the Forsyths have only two children, they clearly live a family-centered, Patriarchal lifestyle?as was shown on an episode of ?World?s Strictest Parents.? ?While on this retreat we also saw Jim-Bob being a ?father to the fatherless?? reaching out to girls who had lost their father to death. This was to show that the Duggar children DO have friends beyond their siblings.

Then there is the Bates family. Gil and Kelly Bates are long-time friends of the Duggars who have recently become closer as their mega-families (all of similar age) begin reaching Courtship age. They have connected at ATI family events and the Duggars have been shown designing and helping build almost an entire new home for the Bates family. Like the Duggars, the Bates speak openly about changing their thinking to allow God to plan their family. In fact, Kelly Bates said ?I always told my family I wasn?t going to have any children?.I was very career oriented.? ?[Kelly] said she wanted to work with special needs children or in some kind of ministry.?

It is my belief that a few ideas have been ?road tested? for the Duggars by the Bates. One such is the idea of grown unmarried daughter continuing her education after her GED. In the last season of ?18 Kids and Counting? we were introduced to the tremendous musical talent of Erin Bates and were informed that she had turned down a chance to study music in college. Apparently this did not go down well with viewers. Erin was allowed to take a music theory course at a local ultra-conservative Christian school?Crown College. One of the older Duggar girls even got to go along to see the college. The second ?test drive? by the Bates is the possibility of college study on a larger scale than merely a necessary class. They have acknowledged that that their eldest son ?Zachary earned a high score on his ACT test, has a high school degree and is now immersed in college-level studies.?? Could this be testing the waters for a Duggar boy or Girl? Not likely, given Gothard?s teachings, but still a possibility.

Another way we know the Duggars are Quiverfull is by their children?s pat answers. In each of the episodes when a new baby has been announced the kids are always ?thrilled.? So, too, are the Bates children?shown ?celebrating? Mom?s positive pregnancy test early in the morning on the long drive to the Duggar?s home.? We were treated to a family ?vote? on the new baby?s name, too [for Jordyn].? It is very telling that the older girls speak of ?our little kids? in ways normally only a mother would speak. A hallmark of such families is to have the older children (especially the older girls) help out with the housework and child care. The little children are routinely shown being helped, instructed, scolded and comforted by their big sisters.? Still, it is ?Daddy? whose word is law. The command ?Daddy says no one is to play outside,? was shown in one episode to elicit immediate obedience.

The Duggar children, after age 8, are expected to help their younger siblings thru the family?s ?Buddy System.? The ?big Buddy? helps the little one get dressed, do school work and even help them learn to play the piano or violin. Jim-Bob has written in their book that ?The buddy system brings much joy to our home.???The family also uses what they call ?jurisdictions? which divide the household chores among the children. ?Many hands make light work,? is a favorite Duggar saying. The most arduous chores?such as meal preparation and the never-ending laundry, however, are in the hands of the elder girls and have been since they were pre-teens. [?14 Kids?? ?16 Kids?? ?Raising 16 kids?]. In the early Duggar?TV specials the older girls were visibly exhausted and shown bizarrely wearing dress coats and carrying diaper bags and shoulder purses all before reaching their teens.

The older children also are expected to uphold the teachings and standards imposed by the parents. Viewers were recently treated to Joy-Anna Duggar [a preteen at the time] covering a?TV screen and using the family code word ?Nike? to prevent her younger brothers from seeing something inappropriate. She did not want them to be ?defrauded? by the image on the screen, but? could not really define the term ?defraud.?? Her sheepish Grandmother explained that Joy-Anna had been taught to do this. Very recently we saw Josh Duggar and wife Anna back home helping care for his siblings while Michelle and baby Josie were hospitalized. He spoke of having to reassert his authority as the eldest sibling.

Various Duggar children were shown at the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival enjoying ?wholesome? family entertainment, such as the movie ?Fireproof? and speaking out about how badly this is needed.? Strangely, many of the Duggars watching these films were way below the target audience age, but being a Quverfull and Patriarchal family, they all went together.

The kids have all been?shown participating in activities at an ATI family event in Big Sandy, Texas and, we have been told, Josh Duggar met his wife, Anna, in a concession line at one such event. While the boys mostly went off to enjoy themselves rappelling and doing other fun things, the older girls were volunteer helpers with all the little children?s activities at the event and only enjoyed a break for the combined orchestra?s practice and performance. Later in the same year, the oldest girls earned a break from housework and child care and attended an ATI girls retreat designed to reinforce the teachings they have grown up with.

The Duggars are also part of the ?debt free? and ?self supporting? wing of the Christian right. Jim-Bob gives credit to ATI?s financial guru, Jim Sammons?even linking to Sammon?s program on the family web site. The Duggars and their most visible friends eschew jobs in favor of family-owned businesses. Keeping the family together in the home, in homeschool and in family- and home-based business is essential to Quiverfull thinkers.

Jim-Bob Duggar has been very ?blessed? by some of his real estate deals. Examples shown on their show were land rented out for a cell phone tower as well as a former chicken hatchery that is leased as commercial and warehouse space. In their book he gives even more details of fortunate real estate deals. Michelle explained on the show that they worked ?really hard? when they were young to be able to ?relax? now.

The Duggar sons are expected to follow this line of thinking in their own careers. To date 3 sons are now done with their ?education,? have a GED and are in business. Josh, following in his father?s footsteps, has a used car lot. John David, again in his father?s footsteps, has a towing business. Joseph, who is currently at the family home with elder brother John, has not been identified as having his own business but is said to be helping John. To mainstream America, these boys are not educated to the point of having a job at much more than McDonalds. In fact you cannot even enlist in the U.S.Marine Corps with a GED! But in Quiverfull families, this is normal.

The Duggar friends all have similar business?the Stanleys have a construction company, the Bates own a tree service company, the Maxwells have a family business producing materials for family scheduling. In their book, the Duggars provide mere lip-service to the idea that their children could realistically aspire to more:

?If one of our children is called to a specialized field, such as medicine, we will help him or her prepare for it. But our main educational goal is to give them as much knowledge and as many skills as possible to prepare them for adult life. While we value academics, we also want to prepare them to run a household or support a family with skills such as cooking, sewing, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, money managing, negotiating, and sales experience.?

The Duggar daughters have been shown via the Discovery Health Channel?s web site to have career goals. The joke is on the readers however, as each girl has chosen a Gothard-approved goal like nurse, midwife, missionary, beautician. Helpfully, ATI has training programs in each of these areas. The Duggars also have shown how they teach the girls to change the oil in the car or change a flat tire as well as showing the boys learning to cook or doing some housework. This particular episode of the show seemed hopelessly ?staged.? Especially when the girls were shown in the garage learning about the car?all while little Johanna toddled about in such an inappropriate setting!

The Duggars show up consistently as visitors for ?fellowship? with other openly Quiverfull families on their family blogs. The Maxwells, a family who sings and ministers together and whose adult children continue to live with their parents and under their authority, have not only been seen visiting with the Duggars, but have had their ?Chore Packs? and ?Managers of Their Homes? Scheduling product featured on the Duggar?s show. Links to other family visits:

Sam Baldwin: Duggars and Baldwins

Jim-Bob and Michelle Duggar, their friends Gil and Kelly Bates and others would not be speaking at ATI/IBLP events unless they fully toed the ?party line? of Bill Gothard. The Duggars are the ?cash cow,? the ?draw? for the organization. That party line is ?Quiverfull? with a capital ?Q?.? Do they agree with the idea of ?militant fecundity??i.e. ?outbreeding? the liberal right? (Newsweek, para. 6-7).?? I believe so. After all Joyce writes:

Quiverfull women are more than mothers. They?re domestic warriors in the battle against what they see as forty years of destruction wrought by women?s liberation: contraception, women?s careers, abortion, divorce, homosexuality and child abuse, in that order. (Joyce, Nation, p. 11).

The Duggars, in years past, were active in the Right-to-Life movement, attending protests as a family. Recently the tabloid press has reported that Michelle?s elder sister is a partner in a long-term lesbian relationship. While that sister has been shown on the?TV show there was no discussion of her lifestyle.

Jim-Bob has been active in politics for years. Eldest son, Joshua, was once known as ?the Little Governor? for trailing his Daddy around the Arkansas State House. Josh has also stated his goal of entering politics, although that has not been mentioned on the?TV show. For a while at least, Joshua had a part-time business doing ?communications? work for politicians.? Sadly, his name is the only thing that will help him compete against homeschoolers graduating from Patrick Henry College and other conservative political training grounds.? Even his once stated-goal of attending Bill Gothard?s online law school would not help him. Graduates of that institution are? reportedly allowed to sit the bar exam in only a few states?possibly only in California. Even the oldest Duggar girl?s have had political experience on the campaign for their Dad and for former presidential candidate and family friend Mike Huckabee.

So, how does all this mesh with a?TV reality show? Not very well. There are a few possibilities here.

  • First, that Jim-Bob and Michelle, like most parents, have moderated their standards and expectations over time. A household with kids ranging from birth to early adulthood has very, very different needs than a family of under-5s. That the kids, especially the oldest 6, are sporting trendier, but still modest clothing, and better hairstyles is a sign of growing up and of more prosperous financial times for the whole family.

?

  • Second, that they are ?white washing? or ?soft pedaling? on the Gothard part of their lives to be more attractive to a wider audience. This may also be a requirement in their contract with TLC. Gothard?s true membership figures are not known and the Duggars could be a great recruiting tool to other like-minded families who would not otherwise learn of the organization. Things like the ?family uniform? put off ?seekers? who might be enticed to become ATI and Quiverfull families. So too are many of the disciplinary practices touted by Gothard?s organization. These would not appeal to a broader audience

?

  • Third, they may have ?given? a little on dress in order to conduct ?friendship evangelism.? The family?s stated goal in going on?TV was to reach others for Christ. As then 15-year old Jana Duggar put it in one interview: ??We?re able to share with others about Christ and what he?s done in our lives,? she said, stressing the family?s primary message: ?Children are a blessing and not a burden.?? Out-of-style clothing and bad hair are noticed in all the wrong ways. Looking like ?everyone else,? if a bit more modest, helps newcomers to see their lifestyle as attainable and enjoyable.

?

Which is the truth? While nay-sayers will quickly vote for ?selling out for commercial gain,? it?s likely some of each is a possibility. Still, the Duggars would not be invited to speak at all kinds of ATI/IBLP or Vision Forum events without being card carrying members of the Quiverfull party. I believe Jim-Bob and Michelle, as the world?s most visible adherents to Gothard?s teachings, have the organization?s permission to style themselves in a more mainstream mode.

?

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck ?

So, bottom-line time:

Quiverfull is not a denomination ? there are no membership rolls or doctrinal statements to sign.? Quiverfull is a philosophy and its consequent lifestyle which Jim Bob and Michelle have demonstrably adopted.

Are the Duggars Quiverfull? You bet your life!

Are they Patriarchal? Of course!

FTC approves final settlement with Facebook over privacy issues

19 hrs.

WASHINGTON --?The Federal Trade Commission on Friday gave the final approval to a settlement of federal charges reached last year over Facebook Inc deceiving consumers and forcing them to share more personal information than they had intended.

The settlement requires Facebook to get user consent for some changes to privacy settings and subjects the social networking site to 20 years of independent audits.

That settlement was reached last November but was subject to a public comment period and final vote by the FTC.

Buoyant Republicans turn out to embrace Ryan as VP

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? Mitt Romney could have said almost anything to a buoyant crowd ready to welcome his new running mate and it would have been OK. But flubbing Paul Ryan's big intro evoked a moment of "Say what?" uncertainty.

About 1,000 people had queued in long lines starting before daylight to be the first to hail the Wisconsin congressman who became a conservative hero for championing deep spending cuts. They jammed together under gray skies outside Norfolk's waterside museum, Nauticus, with its showpiece exhibit, the battleship USS Wisconsin, berthed permanently beside it.

Not even an airplane pulling a banner through the cloudy skies ? "MITT ROMNEY: GET YOUR HAND OUT OF MY POCKET" ? flustered them. People beamed, leaning forward, standing on tiptoes, craning their necks as Romney set up the most anticipated debut of his candidacy.

Then Romney says, "... the next president of the United States, Paul Ryan."

Snickers and puzzled expressions muted a building ovation for a heartbeat or two. But then came a throaty outburst, nearly drowned out by heroic movie-theme music loud enough to be felt through the pavement, as Ryan bounded down the bunting-draped steps from the Wisconsin, gave Romney a quick hug and joined him in waving to a crowd aflutter with flags.

After Ryan had already launched into his speech about unabashed budgetary austerity, traditional values and the failures of President Barack Obama's Democratic White House, Romney stepped back onstage to smilingly correct his gaffe.

And it was quickly forgotten.

After all, Obama made the same flub four years ago introducing his running mate and corrected himself instantly: "So let me introduce to you, the next president ? the next vice president ? of the United States of America, Joe Biden!"

Four years later, this conservative-heavy crowd wasn't distracted from rejoicing that Romney had chosen one of them, not some mealy-mouthed moderate.

Cheers of "USA, USA," broke out as Ryan spoke about how America was founded on an idea ? and the sun broke through the clouds midway through the speech.

"I'm telling you, I loved it, every bit of it," said Harry Faircloth of Chesapeake, a burly retired Army officer who was a paratrooper in Vietnam. Faircloth said he'd followed Ryan's congressional career and his efforts to "get a handle on the finances of this country."

"I got kids and grandkids and we have to change the way things are being done so they'll have a country," he said.

Margaret Lewis, wearing an American flag sweater, said the newly minted pairing of a Mormon and a Roman Catholic running mate gave her hope that they would champion moral values, such as restrictions on abortion and gay rights. "I think we need religion back in this country, we need the Lord's Prayer back in schools," she said.

His debut address over, Ryan's family joined him, and he embraced his daughter and two sons before kissing his wife, Janna, and stepping off the stage and into the race for the White House.

For the crowd, at least, the emotional, carefully orchestrated event overwhelmed the hitch at the beginning.

"My reaction was to laugh it off," Arleen Crawford, 57, a speech therapy teacher for public schools in nearby Virginia Beach, said about Romney's momentary lapse. "Then my next reaction was, 'Oh Lord, there it is, the faux pas they're looking for."

Lemon Wallet (for iPhone)

By Jill Duffy

If my wallet went missing, I don't know if I'd be able to account for every card that's in it, much less find all the phone numbers to cancel accounts or order replacement cards. (To tell the truth, I actually keep two pouches: one for cash and primary credit cards, and I can quickly tell you exactly what's inside, and a second one for frequent flyer cards, loyalty punch cards, my library card, and other miscellaneous stuff that I may not be able to name off the top of my head, but they are low-stakes cards and it wouldn't hurt terribly if they went missing. Then again, I'm hyper organized.) Nevertheless, the point is most people don't back up the information in their wallets. The Lemon Wallet iPhone app (free) does just that. Lemon Wallet stores pictures of everything in your wallet, including receipts you might need for expense reports.

But in the virtual wallet game, Lemon doesn't cut the mustard, falling well short of other apps that cover the same ground, Adaptu Wallet (free, 4 stars) being the best example. Adaptu can house a backup of your wallet information, but it is also a personal finance app with budgeting tools and connections to bank accounts, too. Adaptu Wallet has a whole feature dedicated to letting you upload images of credit cards, licenses, business cards, and other odds and ends from your wallet, but the app does so much more than that. Lemon Wallet doesn't do much else.

In other words, Lemon Wallet falls very short of being a virtual wallet. One of my personal favorite personal wallet apps, Google Wallet (free, 4 stars, for Android only) supports payments right through the phone handset via NFC chip, but Google's solution is admittedly rudimentary. It needs more time and development work to mature fully, but at least it strives to really achieve "virtual wallet" status. In light of Google Wallet, Lemon Wallet tastes pretty sour.

Early adopters who aren't on one of the five supported Android phones or one tablet that support Google Wallet can instead try LevelUp or Pay With Square, because both are freely available on iPhone and Android devices.

Features, Both Buried and Obvious
Setting up Lemon Wallet is straightforward: download it from the App Store and create an account. You'll enter an email address for your account and set a four-digit PIN.

The app asks you to start snapping pictures of your cards (a simple camera function) before it allows you to explore anything else in the app, which creates a problem. As you finish uploading your first card, Lemon dumps you onto the virtual wallet screen so you can see it?without showing you how to rename the card or adjust other settings. Most of the settings are so buried that you could easily overlook them now and forever more. None show up on the home screen or under the Settings button. You have to move through at least two screens to find them.

Additionally, should you find the settings and features to make adjustments to your uploaded cards, the classifications you can add are credit, debit, and other, a measly selection if you ask me. Why not add some of the other common card types, like frequent flyer, membership, loyalty, identification, insurance, business cards, and so on?

If you do go hunting for features, you'll find more than just ways to organize your cards. Lemon Wallet contains a system for uploading receipts to help you with expense reports, and the app can import from and export to Expensify, Evernote, and Box.

Lemon did impress me at one point with some nifty automation. When I scanned a museum membership card, which has an image from Van Gogh's Starry Night on the front and no text whatsoever, Lemon Wallet named the card "Starry Night," which was technically wrong (I changed the name later) but I was still impressed that it could identify the artwork. I wouldn't be surprised if Starry Night were a common image theme people choose for their credit cards.

When I shut down Lemon Wallet and later opened it again, I was shocked it didn't ask me to enter my PIN! Inside the app, I tapped on the preview of one of my cards to open the full image of it, which is when Lemon decided I needed to prove myself. For me, this isn't tight enough security. Any app that uses a PIN should require it before it lets you in. Period.

Skip the Lemons
Lemon Wallet is not my app of choice for backing up my wallet. On iPhone, I think Adaptu is a better option, and Android users should be curious about, but not necessarily yet sign up for, Google Wallet. By and large, virtual wallet apps just aren't ready to be used yet the way they're intended?as a complete mobile payment replacement system, but they're getting close. Mobile wallet companies have to take security very seriously, and a PIN requirement to enter the app itself should be the absolute bare minimum, which Lemon Wallet neglects to do. If you're interested in mobile payments and living a wallet-less lifestyle, be an early adopter of Google Wallet, Pay With Square, or LevelUp. And skip the lemons.

It's Time for HR to Die | The Savvy Intern by YouTern

My industry is falling apart? and I couldn?t be happier about it.

Why?

Because it is time for HR to die.

This might sound like something melodramatic or vindictive, but truthfully, it?s neither. Let me explain.

If we?re going to put things in boxes (something I vehemently hate but try to make peace with for the sake of communication), I work primarily on the OD side of HR/OD, which stands for ?Human Resources/Organizational Development.? In an organization, this is the group who deals with anything ?people-related.? In theory, it?s the human side of business.

In practice, though, it often ends up being more about Human Resistance than being a Human Resource. To add insult to injury, this side of business doesn?t really get treated like a respectable part of the business, either. There are (at least) three very good reasons for this (and none of them are the ?fault? of HR/OD people):

First, it?s due to the way HR came into existence, through personnel functions and labor relations. From the very beginning, it was seen as subservient to the ?real? leaders, who ran things like finance, operations, or sales.
Second, HR/OD typically deals in the ?softer? side of business ? meaning it?s harder to quantify than something like finance, operations, or sales. (I hope the irony of how much more difficult this supposed ?soft? side of business can be isn?t lost on you.)
Third, because of #1 and #2, the folks that have been historically attracted to these roles have tended to not know how to speak the language of business ? it hasn?t been necessary. Of course, now it is, but this creates a vicious cycle leading us back to HR/OD not being respected.

Recently I?ve been noticing a trend for many organizations to outsource more of their HR/OD workforce. These people can, supposedly at least, easily shift into a more consultative type of role, and by doing this a company can reduce it?s full-time employees and drastically cut expenses.

What?s exciting about this seemingly scary trend is that if it can continue on a large scale, and HR can disintegrate to the point where it doesn?t look anything like where it started, there will be an opportunity to build something new in its place ? which is exactly what needs to happen.

Also, I?m pretty sure most of the wonderful people I know in HR/OD would relish the opportunity to actually, finally, BE a human resource (something the current system will never allow).

We, as a workforce and marketplace, haven?t been ready to create something new until very recently. But now we are. The evidence is piling up around us, in the form of the R.O.W.E., the 20% rule, and ?crazy? new ideas entering the business lexicon from books like ReWork and Drive (and hopefully My Book when it comes out).

Soon, we will build what should have been there all along: internal, equal, top-level* strategic business partners who are 100% sold out to building a healthy work environment, fostering exceptional company culture, and championing full employee engagement. (I call the leader of this group a Chief Culture Officer, and it is one piece of the puzzle in the very exciting future of organizations.)

The death of HR will mean the birth of something much better.

I don?t know about you, but I can?t wait.

//

P.S. For a more in-depth look at this issue, download the article ?Talent Pool or Talent Puddle? by Marc Effron and Miriam Ort.

//

*I say ?top-level? so you know where in the organization I?m talking about ? but I had to add this footnote as a caveat, because, as we know, the real leaders of the future lead from the bottom.

Growing a Money Tree Needs Patience and ... - Personal Finance

A tree gives us shelter, food and a variety of by products. We all want such a Money Tree. But the Money Tree cannot be grown overnight and takes a lot of patience and discipline while it grows it?s deep roots. And there are no short cuts to growing a tree!

The following links have been taken from my column on?Bihardays, titled Money Tree

Money Tree-Lights, Camera and Action Steps on Money Management

MoneyTree is back. To some of you who doubted if the MoneyTree was dead, let me assure you that the ?Tree? was growing roots that were not visible above the ground! You must have heard of the tale of two friends who planted seeds at the same time. While one friend was happy that a sapling sprouted up in quick time, the other friend was worried as there were no signs of anything coming up from the seed he planted. However in time, while the first sapling grew up to be a shrub, the other plant that took it?s own sweet time, grew into a giant Tree.?

Money Tree- Real Example of Mis-selling and the Cost of Free Advice

In the last column of the MoneyTree, we discussed the cost of free advice . The assumption was that the commission based advice sets you back by just 2% in return. And this 2% setback translates into Rs 1 crore over a period of 30 years. Let?s take a live case and see that the cost of free advice can be much more monstrous. Dr. Kumar De (name changed) is a renowned Doctor in Kolkata. Despite being an expert in his field and being a man of intelligence and maturity, he?s at the receiving end of the free advice givers

Money Tree ? Cost of Free Advice is more than One Crore!

Why pay for financial advice when you can get it for free? You get it free from friends, colleagues, relatives, bank executives and insurance agents, right? But have you ever wondered that the free advice might cost you a lot of money? For example, if you buy costly insurance plan that you don?t need or a mutual fund that does not suit your investment profile, you will lose much more than the annual fee of a financial planner. True Financial Planners are not Advisors or Product Sellers and they prepare a Financial Plan...

?

Money Tree ? Getting started on Your Financial Plan

?

I always believe that life unfolds itself, and with utter disregard for your plans to achieve this or that. But I guess,?Dwight D Eisenhower?is more articulate. Read on. Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.?There is a very great distinction because when you are planning for an emergency you must start with this one thing: the very definition of ?emergency? is that it is unexpected, therefore it is not going to happen the way you are planning. Money Tree ? Using Tools and Technology for Managing Money

To get started on financial management, you need to start measuring your financial situation first. Because once you start measuring things, managing them becomes clearer and easier. For most of us, this means balancing our checkbook and listing out our investments in a notebook (In MS Excel these days). Right? Smart people would be setting up a detailed system and software that tracks expenses, optimizes income and tracks savings and investment. They know that?there are several downsides for not maintaining...?

Money Tree: The Four Parameters of Analyzing Financial Products

The first thing most people want to discuss with me, when they come to know about my background in the financial services industry background, is, whether they should buy this financial product or that. I start with the observation that since everyone has different financial goals and risk appetite, this discussion can take a long time. I also pitch my RupeeCamp to them. ? Moreover, since we are not talking about buying potatoes and onions, let me articulate on the things to look at before you make the...?

Money Tree ? How we buy Financial Products

Buying financial products is often about taking decisions automatically with the mind working subconsciously rather than taking rational decisions of the mind. Let me share some important research on the subject. The first research is about how emotional ads are processed quite differently by the brain than those that appeal to logic.?Link Excerpts: Researchers had subjects view different ads, some that used logical persuasion to sell, and others that used what they called ?non-rational influence? ads.

Asian shares hit 3-month high on hopes for Europe, more easing

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares extended gains to a third straight session on Wednesday, reaching a three-month high, as investors continued to bet that policymakers will soon take decisive action to address the euro zone fiscal crisis and declining global growth.

Oil and copper eased from their highs but remained underpinned by such hopes, while the euro stabilised and safe-haven government bonds suffered from weakening demand.

But European stocks were likely to be more guarded, with U.S. stock futures signalling a softer Wall Street start. Financial spreadbetters called the main indexes in London, Paris and Frankfurt to open down as much as 0.7 percent.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.2 percent, after world stocks climbed to a three-month high on Tuesday, shrugging off soft data showing a further contraction in Italy and a fall in factory orders in Germany.

Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 0.7 percent.

"Markets are undergoing a small correction from excessive pessimism as the U.S. jobs data showed that conditions were not one-sidedly taking a turn for the worse," said Ayako Sera, senior market economist at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, adding that a lack of negative news from Europe helped keep the tone positive.

"The source of European instability is fiscal convergence, which will take years to be accomplished, and as long as this insecurity remains, investors won't easily let go of expectations for further monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve to underpin sentiment and growth, bolstering equities," she said.

Risky assets began their rising trend on Friday after U.S. nonfarm payrolls overshot expectations and eased concerns over its recovery, while a rise in the jobless rate kept hopes intact for the Fed to ease further next month. Markets also re-evaluated European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's pledge for action to contain borrowing costs for Spain.

"There's been a reassessment of risks in recent days," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst from CMC Markets in Sydney. "Mr Draghi's recent comments in the eyes of the market has reduced the probability of a near term crisis in Europe."

Investors will be turning to data from China on Thursday, including industrial output, retail sales and inflation, for indications of whether the world's second-largest economy can regain momentum in the second half of the year.

"The immediate focus is now on growth and the key litmus test this week will be provided by Chinese data, which needs to show a convincing sign of recovery from a sluggish first half in order to sustain the renewed appetite for risk," Kim Byung-yeon, an analyst at Woori Investment & Securities.

As risk appetite recovered on hopes that global policymakers will act to help resolve the euro zone's three-year debt crisis, demand weakened for safe-haven assets such as government bonds, pushing 10-year Japanese government bond yield up to a one-month high of 0.810 percent on Wednesday.

Asian credit markets firmed, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index tightening by 1 basis point and pinned near its lowest since March.

EURO STEADIES

The euro eased 0.1 percent to $1.2386, off a one-month high of $1.2444 hit on Monday. The safe-haven yen stabilised against the dollar, trading at 78.55 yen.

Despite hopes the ECB will soon start buying bonds to ease bond market jitters, markets were still worried by Germany's continued opposition to any large-scale bond-buying programme while Greece is walking a tightrope over its deficit chasm, awaiting global creditors to approve bailout funds.

"For now, the disparate and 'off the cuff' talk from the politicians indicates that the debate on what to do is still ongoing. We don't see the debate over Greece affecting risk sentiment much more in August. The risks for later in September and beyond remain real, however," Societe Generale said in a research note.

In Japan, another hugely indebted country, political wrangling over an opposition demand for an early election is threatening to cloud the fate of its tax hike plan, crucial to stem the country's ballooning budget deficit.

Oil prices fell after racing up to a 12-week high on Tuesday, with Brent crude futures down 0.4 percent to $111.57 a barrel and U.S. crude down 0.5 percent to $93.23 a barrel.

Copper shed 0.6 percent to $7,537 a tonne after reaching a one-week high on Tuesday.

A change in asset flows could benefit gold, which has been undermined by the dollar's strength as the euro slumped.

The correlation between gold and the Australian dollar, which has consistently held above the 100-week moving average since mid-2005, suggests bullion could be set for a rebound while the Australian dollar may be peaking, some analysts said.

The key technical support level is at 1,520 this week with the cross trading at 1,527, they noted.

Medical examiner: Actor Sherman Hemsley had cancer

EL PASO, Texas (AP) ? A Texas medical examiner's office says cancer led to the death of actor Sherman Hemsley, who starred as George Jefferson in the hit television sitcom "The Jeffersons."

The El Paso County medical examiner's office released a report Wednesday attributing the actor's death to a cancerous tumor obstructing a large vein.

Hemsley died at his home in El Paso on July 24. He was 74.

The Philadelphia-born Hemsley played George Jefferson in the CBS sitcom "All in the Family," then starred in the spinoff "The Jeffersons" from 1975 to 1985. It was one of TV's longest-running and most successful sitcoms, particularly noteworthy with its mostly black cast.

Hemsley made George Jefferson ? the bigoted, blustering Harlem businessman ? one of TV's most memorable characters and a symbol for urban upward mobility.
