Chicago schools: 'Very close' to averting strike

Sitthixay Ditthavong / AP

Members of community group Parents 4 Teachers display pro-teacher posters outside City Hall on Friday in Chicago. The Chicago Teachers Union has threatened to proceed with plans to strike on Monday, if negotiations fail.

By NBC News staff and wire services

CHICAGO --?Chicago Public School officials said late on Saturday they believed they were "very close" to reaching an agreement with teachers to avert what would be the biggest U.S. labor strike in a year over Mayor Rahm Emanuel's demand for sweeping school reforms.

Some 29,000 teachers and support staff have threatened to strike on Monday, setting up an awkward confrontation between Emanuel, President Barack Obama's former top White House aide, and organized labor in the president's home city.

A protracted stoppage could sour relations between Obama's Democrats and national labor unions, who are among the biggest financial supporters of the Democratic Party and will be needed by the party to help get out the vote in the November 6 election.

Both sides in the dispute expressed some optimism at the end of negotiations on Saturday evening - with school officials sounding more hopeful than the union. The two sides will resume talks on Sunday morning.

In Chicago, parents are holding their breath as 29,000 public school teachers and support staff prepare to strike Monday, principally about salaries and teacher evaluations. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

"This is a proposal that we believe is very close to what is needed to do a deal," said school board president David Vitale.

"We have listened. We have moved dramatically on almost all of these issues to try to accommodate them and to respect our teachers."

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said the offer was improved, but she would not call it "dramatically" improved. Union officials departed from union headquarters singing "Solidarity Forever."

And the union earlier Saturday said it would set up strike headquarters in anticipation of an impasse, NBCChicago.com reported.

"There's enough distance between the two sides that without some real movement, we're not going to get this thing done on time," CTU vice president Jesse Sharkey told NBCChicago.com.

If teachers walk off the job Monday, it would be the first teachers strike in Chicago in 25 years, affecting up to 400,000 students.

School officials have encouraged parents to have contingency plans on Monday. Chicago Public Schools Chief Jean-Claude Brizard said 144 schools would remain open for half-day programs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the event of a strike, according to NBCChicago.com.

A protracted stoppage could sour relations between Obama's Democrats and national labor unions, who are among the biggest financial paymasters of the Democratic Party and will be needed by the party to help get out the vote in the November elections.

While Emanuel did not attend the talks, he and Lewis have clashed, and she has accused him of being a bully and using profanity in private meetings.

When talks ended on Friday, the union described the latest offer from the school district as "totally unacceptable."

Difficult times, new direction
At issue is teacher pay and school reforms, such as tougher teacher evaluations that are the core of a national debate on improving struggling urban schools.

Emanuel is offering a 2 percent pay increase annually over the next four years, while the union wants substantially more.

The 402,000 students of Chicago's public schools score poorly on standardized reading, math and science tests in most national studies, and the union says that class sizes are far too big.

Emanuel, who has a reputation as a tough negotiator, is demanding that teacher evaluations be tied with standardized test results, a move the union is resisting.

Only about 60 percent of high school students in Chicago graduate, compared with a national average of 75 percent and more than 90 percent in some affluent Chicago suburbs.

More than 80 percent the students in Chicago public schools qualify for free lunches because they are from low-income families.

Until Emanuel pushed through a longer school day this year, Chicago elementary school students received fewer hours of instruction per year than any of 30 major city school districts studied by reform group National Center on Time and Learning.

Chicago pushes longer school days as key to achievement

The city has little room to sweeten the pot in the negotiations because the school district has already drained its budget reserves and levied the highest property tax allowed by law to finance schools.

It also faces a crushing burden of pensions promised to retiring teachers that an independent watchdog said the city can no longer afford.

Major credit rating agencies have downgraded the Chicago Public Schools debt rating, meaning that it will have to pay higher interest rates if it issues bonds.

?Teachers want to be in the classroom but we need to stand up for our rights," Albert Delgado, a teacher at the Whittier School in the city's Pilsen neighborhood, told Reuters. "I can only say that the teachers I spoke with believe we will be on the picket line (on Monday)."

Japan, China leaders meet amid tension over islands

TOKYO (Reuters) - Chinese President Hu Jintao said on Sunday Japan should not make a "wrong decision" over a territorial dispute when he met Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda after weeks of tension between the neighbors, media reported.

The two leaders met for 15 minutes on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vladivostok.

No talks had been scheduled, given the row over their claims to uninhabited islands known as the Diaoyu in China and the Senkaku in Japan, but the Japanese prime minister said on Friday he would not shun a brief exchange.

Noda said Japan hoped to develop a mutually beneficial, strategic relationship with China and that he planned to deal with current relations from a "comprehensive perspective", Japan's Jiji news agency reported.

China's state television broadcaster, CCTV, reported that Hu told Noda a "severe situation" had developed over the islands which are controlled by Japan and owned by a Japanese family.

China is angry about a plan by Noda's government to buy the islands, which are near potentially significant offshore gas fields. CCTV said Hu had raised objections to the purchase.

"It is illegal and invalid for Japan to buy the island via any means. China firmly opposes it," CCTV quoted Hu as saying.

"China will unswervingly safeguard its sovereignty. Japan must realize the severity of the situation and not make a wrong decision."

Relations between the Asian powers have been difficult for years.

Japan's behavior before and during the World War Two, when it occupied much of China and battled Chinese armies opposed to its rule, has soured relations with China ever since.

Tension over the islands flared last month when Japan detained a group of Chinese activists who landed on them.

That sparked anti-Japanese protests in several Chinese cities and China's state news agency blamed Japan for pushing tension "to a new high" before Japan released the activists.

Despite such friction, economic ties between Japan and China are deeper than ever and both countries are believed to want to keep the feud from spiraling out of control.

Energy Improvements To Blyth Homes Has Positive Impact On ...

Residents in Cowpen, Blyth, Northumberland have received energy efficiency improvements and renewable energy technologies to their refurbished homes as part of a collaborative ?1.9m European Regional Development Funded (ERDF) Project.

A total of 53 Wimpey ?no fines?- non-traditional construction ? socially rented, post-war properties, managed by Homes for Northumberland are planned for improvements in Blyth. To date, 30 homes have been fitted with specialist insulated rendering systems to their external walls, voltage optimisers ? ensuring that the voltage supplied to all the electrical appliances is optimised, gas saver units and low energy light bulbs as part of measures designed to help residents save money on their energy bills at a time of rising prices. A selection of the properties will also generate their own electricity using solar panels which will be fitted on the roofs.

Cowpen in Blyth is one of three areas benefiting from the ERDF project being managed by the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec). Three high-rise blocks of flats in Jarrow, Tyne and Wear and 136 ?Tarran Newland? South Tyneside Homes in Marsden, South Shields have also been selected for energy efficiency improvements and are being fitted with PV panels, loft and external wall insulation, and energy efficiency boilers.

William Maddison, Homes for Northumberland resident said, ?I am already noticing a reduction in my energy bills and the house is definitely warmer. I am really impressed with the energy efficiency improvements made and the impact these have had on my home and quality of life so far.?

The project aims to lift local residents out of fuel poverty, while reducing carbon emissions and improving the quality of life of residents.

Ian Johnson, interim director of property services at Homes for Northumberland said, ?With gas and electricity bills going up all the time, which can put a massive strain on a typical household income, we are always looking at ways of reducing residents? energy costs as much as possible. We are therefore delighted to be working on this fantastic project.

?We are working closely with Narec to monitor the improvements to these homes and how they have helped tenants, from any reductions in energy bills to differences in the comfort level of the homes.? This information is invaluable for helping us to improve projects like this in the future so they can be the best they possibly can be.?

The effectiveness of modifications and their impacts on the behaviour of residents, such as the energy required to heat a home to an adequate level and the number of residents lifted out of fuel poverty are being monitored and the data analysed by the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec). This greater understanding will help to inform future improvements in relation to the performance and utilisation of low carbon, innovative energy products as well as how best to apply low carbon products in socially rented prefabricated properties.

Helen Hampson, Microrenewables ERDF Project Manager, Narec explains, ?The data is being collected over a two year timeframe to provide valuable information regarding thermal efficiency improvements in socially rented houses as well as vital research on the impact of new technologies on retrofit properties and this learning will be applicable to social landlords, local authorities and private homeowners. This project also relates to the soon to be launched Coalition Government?s flagship Green Deal project which encourages improvements to be made to properties which will save energy and reduce costs. Both initiatives will make a significant improvement to the energy efficiency of North East homes and help tenants to make substantial energy savings.?

As part of the project local businesses are also being given the opportunity to visit the properties so they can see first-hand the houses at various stages of development and improvements being made. It is hoped that this will help to generate a greater understanding of new technologies and their application and encourage more businesses to expand or diversify into the microgeneration and low carbon technology market.

The project will benefit from ?1.9m of investment from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-2013 is bringing over ?300m into the North East to support innovation, enterprise and business support across the region.

Xtandi (enzalutamide) has been approved for men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer that has recurred or spread, regardless of whether patients received medical or surgical therapy to reduce testosterone levels, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced. Enzalutamide has been approved to be administered alongside docetaxel, another cancer medication.

The FDA reviewed Xtandi under its Priority Review Program, which allows medications to be reviewed within just six months. This type of accelerated program is reserved for drugs that have the potential to offer major treatment advances, or medications for which no proper therapy exists. According to the FDA in an online communiqu? ?Xtandi received FDA approval three months ahead of the product?s prescription drug user fee goal date of Nov. 22, 2012?.

Richard Pazdur, M.D., director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA, said:

?The need for additional treatment options for advanced prostate cancer continues to be important for patients. Xtandi is the latest treatment for this disease to demonstrate its ability to extend a patient?s life.?

FDA scientists evaluated Xtandi?s efficacy and safety by assessing data from a clinical trial involving 1,199 men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who had previously received docetaxel. The study?s primary endpoint was to measure how long each patient survived (overall survival) ? the patients had been randomly selected to receive either Xtandi or a dummy drug (placebo).

The trial showed that those in the Xtandi group survived for an average of 18.4 months, compared to 13.6 months in the placebo group.

Side effects ? reported side-effects linked to Xtandi therapy included back pain, headache, upper respiratory infections, hypertension, anxiety, tingling, blood in urine, lower respiratory infections, musculoskeletal pain, tissue swelling, hot flushes, joint pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weakness.

Approximately 1% of patients on Xtandi had at least one seizure; they were immediately taken off the drug.

The clinical trial had no patients with a history of seizure, stroke, brain metastasis, those on medications which may increase seizure risk, a temporary drop in blood supply to the brain, or any underlying brain injury with loss of consciousness. The FDA said that Xtandi?s safety with these patients is unknown.

Xtandi will be manufactured and sold by two companies, Astellas Pharma US Inc., and Medivation Inc.

Charles Sawyers and Michael Jung discovered enzalutamide, which was developed by Medivation Inc. According the company, the drug reported up to an 89% decrease in prostate specific antigen serum levels within a month of treatment in 3 clinical trials. Preliminary clinical studies also indicate that enzalutamide slows down breast cancer cell growth.

The two companies say Xtandi should be available to patients in the USA in mid-September 2012. Medivation says Xtandi has also been submitted for review to EMA (the European Medicines Agency).

David Hung, M.D., co-founder, president and CEO of Medivation, Inc., said:

?Today?s approval marks a significant accomplishment for Medivation. We are proud to be in a position to offer a new treatment, XTANDI, for this patient population for which there is a significant unmet medical need. I would like to extend my thanks to the patients, physicians, and their study teams who participated in the clinical trials, and to our employees, and those of our partner Astellas, who have been instrumental in helping us reach this important milestone.?

Howard I. Scher, M.D., chief, Genitourinary Oncology Service, Sidney Kimmel Center for Prostate and Urologic Cancers, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and co-leader of one of the Xtandi pivotal studies, called ?AFFRIM?, said that ?Enzalutamide provides an exciting new option for physicians that can prolong the lives of patients with metastatic prostate cancer who have received chemotherapy. It is extremely gratifying to have led the clinical trial of enzalutamide, having followed the development of this drug from its early inception in the laboratory to the clinic.?

Stephen Eck, M.D., Ph.D., Vice President of Medical Oncology, Astellas Pharma Global Development, said:

?We believe Xtandi has the potential to play an important role in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. We?re eager to work with Medivation to make this much-needed new treatment available to medical professionals and patients in September.?

Xtandi, an androgen receptor inhibitor, is taken orally, once a day, in four 40mg capsules (160 mg per day). It can be taken during or before meals and does not require concomitant prednisone. 48% of patients given Xtandi in the phase 3 trial were treated with glucocorticoids.
The FDA requires that Medivation and Astellas carry out an open-label safety study in high-risk of seizures patients. The companies say the results from this study should be available in 2019.

Disease-free survival for invasive ductal breast cancer (IDC) patients may be easier to predict with the help of F-18-fludeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scans, according to research published in the September issue of The Journal of Nuclear Medicine. New data show that high maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) of F-18-FDG in the lymph nodes prior to treatment could be an independent indicator of disease recurrence.

"Many studies have revealed that breast cancer patients with axillary lymph node metastasis have a significantly poorer prognosis than those without nodal metastases," noted Sang-Woo Lee, MD, PhD, one of the authors of "F-18-FDG Uptake by Metastatic Axillary Lymph Nodes on Pretreatment PET/CT as a Prognostic Factor for Recurrence in Patients with Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer." "However, the prognostic value of F-18-FDG uptake in metastatic axillary lymph nodes with PET/CT has not been investigated in IDC patients," he added.

In the study, researchers followed 65 female patients with IDC who had undergone pretreatment F-18-FDG PET/CT and who had pathologically confirmed axillary lymph node involvement without distant metastases. Factors such as age, TNM (tumor, lymph node and metastases) stage, estrogen receptor status, progesterone receptor status, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 status, and SUVmax for the primary-tumor and axillary lymph nodes were analyzed. Patients underwent treatment and were followed for a range of 21-57 months (median of 36 months).

Among the patients, 53 were disease-free and 12 had disease recurrence during the follow-up period. While both the primary-tumor and nodal SUVmax were higher in patients with recurrence, the nodal SUVmax was significantly higher. In addition, compared to the other factors that were analyzed, only nodal SUVmax was found to be an independent determinant of disease-free survival. Using a receiver-operating-characteristic curve, the researchers demonstrated that a nodal SUVmax of 2.8 was the optimal cutoff for predicting disease-free survival.

"One of the important roles of molecular imaging in cancer research is to noninvasively predict precise prognosis. Our results showed significant improvement in the accuracy of risk prediction for disease-free survival rates when nodal SUVmax was added to well-known established risk factors," said Lee. "Our study suggests that 18F-FDG PET/CT could yield useful information for risk stratification and treatment strategies in IDC patients with axillary lymph node involvement."

An estimated one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 280,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed among women in 2011, and nearly 40,000 died from the disease.

What Makes an Alaskan House Ideal for Living

Among the states of the USA, Alaska experiences the coolest climate. Especially in Anchorage, individuals find out to live amid sub-arctic climates which can easily provide extremely cold winter seasons. Homes in Alaska, though, are a wonder: While the weather outside usually tends to be extremely colder, they keep their occupants rather warm.

Houses in this area face two major challenges. One is how to make the people within warm, controlling heat effectively to combat the cold outside. Second is on efficiently preserving the heat, despite the moisture escaping the living area. These two are essential factors in keeping the people within the house warm and snug in spite of the cold weather.

Roofs in Anchorage houses also need to contend with the different factors and elements that roofing systems in severely cold environments experience. These are ice dams forming during the summer time and escaping heat from the inside due to holes caused by ice dams. Roofs of these situations need to be changed immediately to avoid any more damage to your residence.

Essentially, good indoor moisture control, appropriate insulation, and great sealing can combat any type of unfortunate damage caused by factors originating from outside the house. Any Anchorage roofing will serve precisely if a home owner complies with these guidelines. In good indoor moisture control, the melting of ice on the roof can be controlled as escaping heat from the inside is controlled correctly. An excessive amount will trigger the ice on the roof covering to melt much faster, which can lead to ice dams developing on the roof.

In the case of adequate insulation, indoor and outdoor temperatures should be properly stabilized. If one or the other becomes too much, it can generate serious moisture complications which is bad for roofing Anchorage houses have. Specifically, it can affect the wooden frames supporting the roof of the home. In addition, the accompanying health concerns, such as cold-related diseases, can not be good for the people living inside the home.

Last is the key for improving the two earlier factors: really good sealing. If a roof Anchorage homes have is properly secured, the incorporated issues of wrong indoor moisture and bad insulation can minimally or totally cease to exist. Sony VAIO S13 (SVS13112FXW)

You may be forgiven for thinking, at first glance, that the Sony VAIO S13 (SVS13112FXW) ($899.99 list) was a MacBook. Indeed, with its white chassis, the VAIO S13 bears a striking resemblance to Apple's now-discontinued MacBook line. The inevitable comparison does a disservice to the VAIO S13, though, detracting from its multimedia capabilities as well as its sleek chassis, internal optical drive, WiDi functionality, and dual USB 3.0 ports. MacBooks aside, S13's dimensions are nearly identical with those found in ultrabooks, but with one critical difference: it sports a standard-voltage processor, thereby leading to its classification as an ultraportable. Regardless of its appearance, however, the VAIO S13 is a solid choice for anyone looking to add a bit of flair to their everyday computing, even if it isn't the innovative or powerful ultraportable available.

Design and Features
The VAIO S13 measures 0.95 by 13.04 by 8.85 inches (HWD). Its moderately light weight of 3.75 pounds (as weighed on our Labs' scale) lands between the Editors' Choice Toshiba Portege R835-P88 ultraportable (3.2 pounds) and the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814 (4.16 pounds) ultrabook. Its svelte magnesium alloy chassis strikes a nice balance between sturdy and portable. As for the white finish, it's ultimately a matter of taste. Some may like the look because it distinguishes the VAIO S13 from its ultraportable peers as well as the deluge of ultrabooks currently on the market. Others may argue that it unjustly apes the Apple aesthetic. Regardless of which camp you belong to, however, it's worth mentioning that the white finish leaves the VAIO S13, particularly the palmrest, vulnerable to smudging and staining after prolonged use. Taken right out of the box, though, the VAIO S13 looks as stylish and modern one would expect an ultrabook to be, especially when the lid is closed and the shiny VAIO logo embossed on its surface is attractively displayed.

The glossy 13.3-inch display has a resolution of 1,366 by 768, which is standard for its class. The resolution is good enough for 720p video and does a nice job displaying text and images alike. Likewise, movies look sharp, an easily verifiable attribute since the S13 features a slot-loading CD/DVD burner. Meanwhile, the VAIO S13's built-in speakers are on par with most other laptops, capable of pumping out sound at a decent volume for one or two folks in a small room, but nothing that'll keep your next-door neighbors awake at night.

The VAIO S13 sports a backlit tiled keyboard whose keys are decked out in a matte-finished silver color, which looks somewhat odd juxtaposed with the white chassis. Regardless of your aesthetic preference, typing on the VAIO S13 is a breeze, and its sturdy chassis exhibited minimal flexing during use. Sony has included several hotkeys above the keyboard's top row, such as an Assist button that launches VAIO Care for system tune-ups and troubleshooting, a Web button that launches the browser of your choice, and one simply labeled "VAIO" that can be configured to trigger any chosen application. While hotkeys are fairly standard on any keyboard, Sony has also included a "Performance Selector" switch that can be toggled between "Stamina" or "Speed" modes. Reminiscent of the Mode Dial on the Samsung Series 7 Gamer (though not nearly as exaggerated), this switch adjusts power settings on the fly; "Stamina" aims for battery preservation, and accordingly disables the VAIO S13's fans while slightly dimming the screen, whereas "Speed" mode optimizes performance by "maxing" everything out. Like the keyboard, using the touchpad was a smooth endeavor, and it fluidly responded to two-finger scrolling and pinch-zooming. The left- and right- click buttons are both integrated into the touchpad surface. The palm rest is rather narrow, though, so be prepared for some inadvertent clicking with a stray thumb.

Port selection on the VAIO S13 is solid. The slot-loading CD/DVD burner and a headphone jack occupy the left side of the system, while the right side features dual USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port (with sleep and charge capability), two card readers (one for Sony's proprietary Memory Stick interface and one for SD cards), an Ethernet port, a VGA port, and a full-size HDMI output. I'm personally fond of the latter because it removes the need for dongles, making connecting the system to a larger display far less cumbersome. Additionally, the VAIO S13 features Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology, so wires can be removed from the picture entirely since high-definition audio and video can be beamed to any HDTV kitted with an aftermarket adapter, like the Netgear Push2TV ($99 list).

The VAIO S13's 640GB 5,400rpm hard drive comes preloaded with a decent serving of pre-loaded software on it. As is often the case, it ranges from useful apps (like Microsoft Office Starter) to trial software (30-day trial to Kaspersky Internet Security suite). There's also a slew of proprietary software by Sony (VAIO Care, Media Gallery, PlayMemories Home, and so on), though this is tempered by the near-total absence of anything that can be classified as bloatware, so at the very minimum you won't be forced to deal with the usual suspects like desktop links or game suites.

Performance
Sony VAIO S13 Armed with a 2.50GHz Intel Core i5-3210M processor and 6GB RAM combination, the VAIO S13 was a fairly average performer in our benchmark tests. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,128 fell to the bottom of its class, landing within striking distance of the Portege R835-P88 (2,313) but, falling short of the rest of its class by a considerably larger extent. However, the VAIO S13 fared significantly better when it came down to multimedia capabilities. With the exception of the Editors' Choice Lenovo ThinkPad X230 ultraportable (1:35) it led the pack in our Handbrake video encoding test (1 minute 43 seconds), breezing past the both Toshiba Satellite U845-S406 ($879.99 list, 3.5 stars) (1:57) and the Timeline Ultra (1:59) and leaving the others in the dust. Likewise, its Cinebench R11.5 score of 2.84 fell short of the class-leading ThinkPad X230 (3.09) but trumped the rest of its class, including the HP Folio 13-1020US (1.93). It completed our Photoshop CS5 test in a brisk 3 minutes 56 seconds, falling short of the both the Portege R835 (3:56) and ThinkPad (3:37), but still outgunning the Satellite U845 (4:33) and, to an even greater extent, the Folio 13 (5:27)..

The VAIO S13's integrated Intel HD 4000 GPU performed admirably against most of the ultrabooks and ultraportables in its class since they, too, were equipped with integrated GPU's. The only exception was the Aspire Timeline Ultra, whose discrete 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT640MLE GPU propelled it graphical domination across-the-board. The yawning chasm between the VAIO S13's 3DMark06 scores (5,255 at medium detail settings and 1,024-by-768 resolution; 3,272 at native resolution with 4x anti-aliasing) and that of the Aspire Timeline (10,294 and 8,501, respectively) therefore doesn't come as much of a surprise. The VAIO S13 fared better among the rest of its class, though, and only fell short of the Satellite U845 (5,792 and 3,278, respectively) while nonetheless outgunning both the Folio 13 (3,765 and 1,912, respectively) and the Series 5 Ultra (3,234 and 1,934, respectively). Similarly, while the VAIO S13 failed to break the 30 frames-per-second (fps) playability barrier in either Crysis (24fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution) or Lost Planet 2 (19fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution; 10fps in high quality at native resolution), it nonetheless led the rest of its class, save for the beefier Aspire Timeline Ultra (55fps and 25fps in Crysis, respectively; 50fps and 31fps in Lost Planet 2, respectively) and, in one instance, the Portege R835 (20 fps in Crysis in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution).

Sony VAIO S13

We were unable to run our usual MobileMark 2007 test to determine the lifespan of the VAIO S13's removable 4400mAh lithium polymer battery. As an alternative, we utilized a ten-hour video rundown test. While this approach is admittedly not as accurate as MobileMark, it's nonetheless a helpful indicator of a system's battery life. Accordingly, with the VAIO S13 in "Speed" mode and with the display dimmed to 50 percent and Wi-Fi activated, the VAIO S13's battery lasted for 5 hours 25 minutes. The Toshiba U845 lasted 5:02 on the same test, which is 23 minutes shy of the VAIO S13.

The Sony VAIO S13 (SVS13112FXW) isn't the most innovative or robust ultraportable out there. It does, however, have plenty going for it, such as a sleek chassis, WiDi functionality, a decent port selection, and a cheaper price tag than most ultraportables. While its battery life and overall performance falls short of both of the Editors' Choice-winning ultraportables, it's nonetheless a solid choice for anyone seeking to add a bit of flair to their everyday computing.

kirbybarrick3: News and Society Blog-Economics: Is The US ...

This is a medical term used by hospital staff when a patient is beyond all hope of saving but is still alive, still clinging to the very last bit of life till it too is gone, and the patient slips quietly into death. They are no longer a part of this world and gone forever. Is this an accurate description of our economy right now in its present state of being. Has the real estate market hit bottom? How much longer can the federal reserve print money before our dollar is worth absolutely nothing? How much time do we have before our economy is severely effected by the reform of Petrodollar recycling, which would result in the ultimate collapse of the US dollar here in America and abroad. These are all questions investors want to know in today's uncertain economy.

According to The Wall Street Journal's, "Money Watch", a recent study has shown the housing market is slowly on the rise 7.5% over last year at this time. Interest rates have never been lower for financing single family housing. The only problem with this situation is that it really does not matter how low the interest rate is, if your worried about whether you will have a job from one day to the next. The result is that the average citizen is going to hold on to what ever money they have due to a lack of consumer confidence in an uncertain economy. People worried about jobs and the future don't spend money. They also don't spend money on consumer goods which further hurts our already stressed economy. What money they do spend on housing and consumer goods is getting even smaller due to shrinking value of our American dollar which has been quoted to be worth only 4 cents per dollar, thanks to the federal reserve banking system of America.

Every time, the federal reserve creates a need to print more money, it connects with the US Congress to make that happen. In the past, every dollar printed by the fed used to be backed by gold. This law was done away with in 1971. After that date, the federal reserve had a free reign to create money out of nothing and backed only by a promise to pay. The Fed will not account for what they do nor do they feel that they should. This what they believe as they control the cash flow of America's private citizens. Since they are a private company, and connected to the us congress, much information is withheld from the American public on their activities, intentions, and ownership of the federal reserve banking system. They are no more Federal than Federal Express. How is it that an independent company in the private sector has a hold on this country's finances without a transparent view of them by the American public and without accountability of any kind. They basically have a free reign to do what they want when they want it, which will bring this country down financially to its knees. This will not stop unless the federal reserve banking system is abolished, and our governing bodies are separated from the financial institutions of the private sector. In addition, corporations should not be allowed to contribute any monies to any political parties of any kind ever again.

Before the US dollar totally collapses, American citizens will only have to monitor of collapse of the "Petrodollar System, "which now is in the process of reforming negotiations with OPEC and other foreign nations. Their goal is to change the currency for buying oil from US dollars to Eros. First, one must understand the petrodollar system and how it works. For foreign countries to buy oil, they must first exchange their own currency for US dollars. That is what the US world leaders decided. Foreign countries in turn sell the US their products to get a higher rate of exchange for US dollars. All excess profits made by these countries are then recycled back into a US Federal Reserve Account. So as a result, the federal reserve is able to make major profits from the out going dollars to other countries and again when they recycle their excess profits back into private federal reserve accounts. This could also account for the secrecy of the owners of these accounts.

If OPEC and other foreign countries are successful in changing the currency for buying oil, the US dollar will no longer be needed. The Russian Securities Exchange recently opened direct trading between the Chinese currency, the Renminbi, and the Russian Ruble. Other smaller foreign nations are presently discussing switching to the Euro. At this point, two things will happen. The US will go to war(WWIII) to keep of oil and the mega profits they are making as a result of the petrodollar recycling process. They did it in Iraq when the Bush administration found out Saddam Hussein was in the process of changing the currency to gold for all Iraq's oil. The Bush administration put a stop to that by going to war to fight the so called war against terrorism, which was pure bullshit. They gave the same reasons for going to war with Afghanistan when they really wanted to secure the Caspian Oil Pipeline that extended through that country.

Every year the federal reserve must create debt in excess of the debt and interest of the previous year to keep the petrodollar system functioning. The results are clear. When debt is created, money is created. When debt is paid off, money is destroyed. There will never be enough to pay off the debt which leaves consumers stuck in a never ending rat race to keep up. So do not expect for things to get better. They will only get worse at this point and there is a reason for that. Its because the owners(1%) of this country want more for themselves and less for us (99%). So, their bottom line is their master and they do not give a dam about the American people, never have and never will. As long as the owners of this country have control of nation's money, they do not care who makes the laws.

Abolish The Federal Reserve Banking System of America. Our nation's leaders must push towards free energy and a sustainable way of life. If this sounds like the American dream, your right because you have to be asleep to believe it. If you are a firm believer that the US dollar will collapse, and it eventually will, call "Orange Blossom Note Services",at (512) 417-2933 and ask for Kenneth Kern. He can provide you with a fast reliable cash solution for any owner financed contract you want to sell. Why wait? Call now while there is still time.

In Florida, Medicare is not a senior-only issue

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? For Bruce Cargill, an 87-year-old retiree, Medicare is a "glorious program" that, along with Social Security, keeps millions of older Americans out of poverty.

But he's also quick to note that he forks out premiums and co-pays: "It's government insurance. But it's insurance."

Mike Manning, 64, accuses President Barack Obama of "cutting Medicare" through the federal health care overhaul "then lying about it." He also says the country is headed for fiscal ruin unless it curtails spending.

"How do you know who to trust in this?" frets Ed Galante, also a few months from Medicare eligibility. He declares the entire debate to be poisoned by craven politicians.

In Florida, where legions of retirees are so important to election outcomes, voters from seniors to young people express strong feelings about the future of Medicare. The debate is playing out in the presidential campaign as well as House and Senate races that will help determine the balance of power on Capitol Hill.

The views expressed in a series of recent interviews with voters in this key battleground state were as varied as the solutions politicians have offered for the costly entitlement program.

This is where voters found common ground: None expressed confidence that government will provide new generations the benefits now granted to older Americans. And few said they believe that either Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney have a practical answer for sustaining an insurance program that accounts for nearly a fifth of federal spending and about 4 percent of the U.S. economy.

"I just assume Medicare won't be there for me at all," said Christine Pallesen, a 26-year-old business consultant in Fort Lauderdale.

The responses demonstrate how vexing the issue is for Americans across age groups, particularly baby boomers. That landscape makes it particularly difficult for campaigns to know just how their Medicare strategies will play in November.

Like Florida, swing-voting states such as Iowa and Ohio also have large numbers of seniors and older boomers. Obama won all three states in 2008, and Romney has no likely path to the White House if he fails to win Florida and Ohio.

The Medicare debate intensified when Romney named Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, as his running mate. Ryan's long-term budget blueprint would curtail government insurance in favor of vouchers to help individuals buy private plans.

Democrats say that's proof enough that Republicans "will end Medicare as we know it." The GOP counters that the 2010 health care law, which redirects about $700 billion in future Medicare spending, makes the president the real threat to existing beneficiaries.

Democratic strategists in Florida say Medicare is an issue that fires up the party's liberal base while resonating with nonpartisans who believe government should establish a social safety net and reasonably regulate the marketplace.

Their Republican counterparts outline a two-pronged strategy: convince older voters that Romney is the better protector of the status quo for them. But they want younger voters to analyze Medicare within the GOP's larger framing of Obama as a profligate who has left no choice but to overhaul benefits for future recipients.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, 41, said recently after a speech in Palm Beach County, "I believe people in my generation understand that."

Romney demonstrates the delicate balance. He praises Ryan, 42, for forcing "serious discussion," while emphasizing that the congressman's budget won't define a Romney administration. One of Ryan's first campaign stops was at The Villages, a GOP-friendly retirement development in central Florida. He introduced his mother as a proud Medicare recipient.

Michelle Obama came to Fort Lauderdale recently and told an equally friendly audience that her husband's insurance overhaul strengthened the program. Romney has promised a full repeal of that law, though it was patterned after an act he signed with great fanfare as Massachusetts governor. Now in general election mode, Romney has again started highlighting individual provisions of the Massachusetts law.

Florida's senior senator, Democrat Bill Nelson, saddles his Republican challenger, Rep. Connie Mack IV, with the Ryan plan. Mack voted for one version of Ryan's proposed budget, but skipped a second vote.

In the 18th Congressional District, which includes parts of Palm Beach County and all of Martin and St. Lucie counties to the north, Republican Rep. Allen West has in multiple statements embraced his two votes for the Ryan model. But West's initial general election ads don't mention that, as he pledges not to balance the budget on seniors' backs.

Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy said Medicare "is the clear distinction" in the race. Murphy, West's Democratic challenger, said a plan that moves from a "guarantee" to private premium subsidies "is not the same as keeping our Medicare promise." Tim Edson, West's campaign manager, retorted, "If you don't have a plan, don't criticize ours."

That maneuvering and voters' reactions highlight how difficult it is to understand ? and how easy it is for a candidate to manipulate ? the complexities of health care economics and policy.

Glenn Basile, who retired to West Palm Beach after decades as a New York City public school teacher, recalled future President Ronald Reagan lambasting Medicare as a "socialist" threat before President Lyndon Johnson signed the new law. "Has it not always been the Republican point of view to do away with Medicare?" he asked. Basile, 63, said he has voted Republican for president before.

Yet Republicans are right that Ryan has not proposed imposing vouchers on current Medicare beneficiaries, with no one 55 or over being affected by any changes. And the congressman says he would still want future seniors to have the options of government coverage.

Ted D'Alessandro, 64, said Obama's 2010 law will only exacerbate the nation's lopsided financials. Yet the self-described libertarian said the overhaul includes "good things" like barring insurers from denying coverage based on existing conditions and allowing young adults longer stays on family policies. Both provisions add cost to any coverage pool.

The law does not lower the bottom-line of future Medicare spending but reallocates some of what would have been spent under old rules. The reductions come mostly from payments to providers and private insurers who offer plans in lieu of traditional Medicare. The money will cover annual physicals, preventive care and more generous prescription drug coverage. Republicans argue that fewer physicians and hospitals will accept Medicare, meaning fewer services. Obama argues that better access to preventive care and drugs will prevent more expensive hospitalizations.

Ryan's budget presumes some of the same savings found in Obama's law. But Ryan would steer the money back to Medicare's trust fund, a move Republicans pitch as more responsible than spending it elsewhere.

Jean Siciliano is an 85-year-old who came to Palm Beach County from Long Island, N.Y. She said her fellow seniors are less swayed any of the Medicare arguments than strategists and younger voters might assume. They formed their politics long ago, she said, proudly declaring her GOP allegiance.

"I'm set," she said of her Medicare benefits. "They won't come after me. I'm worried about my children. What'll they get? How will they pay for it? ... I don't think any of the politicians know the answer."

Next Apple earbuds get potential sighting in Vietnam, may fix an iconic design video

The pack-in earbuds for iPhones and iPods have been among the most recognizable of technology symbols for more than a decade... just not for their technical merits. They're notorious for slipping out of wearers' ears and having a mediocre sound next to just about anything else you can buy.
