BlackBerry Z10 review

DNP Z10 review

One cannot overstate the importance of this phone. This, the BlackBerry Z10, is the device upon which the fate of BlackBerry (formerly Research in Motion) hangs. That's not to say that the company will disappear if the Z10 -- and the BlackBerry 10 OS that it contains -- is not a mass-market success. But if this phone does not do its job of extending the reach of the 'Berry OS beyond those die-hard loyalists who have clung on to their Bolds and Torches and Storms, it's safe to say that BlackBerry is in for some very hard times.

The company hasn't exactly bet the proverbial farm on this BB10 release, but with massive financial losses tempered only by job cuts, plus an absolutely tectonic shift among the executive leadership and corporate culture architected by CEO and President Thorsten Heins, the phrase "make or break" feels pretty apt. So, then, is this the phone that's good enough to woo buyers away from the Galaxy S III or the iPhone 5 or any of the other delicious devices on the other platforms? The short answer is that no, as of now it isn't quite -- but of course it's a lot more complicated than that. Join us as we explore.

Dickey compelled to help end sexual exploitation

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:42 a.m. ET Jan. 30, 2013

(Eds: Updates.)

R.A. Dickey said the pictures and literature couldn't have prepared him for the young boy who approached him last week on one of the squalid streets of Mumbai's red-light district.

The boy was maybe 3 years old, 4 at best. He had no pants on. His body was covered with open sores.

"He was playing amongst the open sewage and filth with rats as big as dogs. Unsupervised," the Toronto Blue Jays' new knuckleballer told The Canadian Press on a conference call Tuesday from India's most populous city. "You see these images and pictures that just don't seem like they should exist. And you hope that it's the only one ... but that's what's representative, these lives that just don't have a voice."

The 38-year-old is in Mumbai to work with Bombay Teen Challenge, a Christian organization that has rescued women and children from sex trafficking for the past 23 years.

It's a cause that Dickey says speaks to his own narrative. He wrote about being sexually abused as a child in his autobiography "Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball."

"It's authentic to me because of my past experience, also I have a sentimentality to it because the girls that I've seen firsthand in the streets, these 19-, 20-, 21-year-old girls. You have to look beyond that and see at one point they were daughters themselves, and having two daughters ... that just for me was so compelling."

He made the trip with his daughters, 11-year-old Gabriel and 9-year-old Lila.

"I want to give my children a heart for humanity," Dickey said. "The only way to really do that is to get them outside of the bubble that they live in, and expose them in very measured ways to what real life is to a lot of people. They've responded beautifully."

The 2012 NL Cy Young winner said it's been "a roller-coaster" visit, from the visceral red-light images of women in doorways and the cages where they keep them when they're first trafficked.

But he also saw hope.

Dickey and his daughters stayed at Ashagram, a rehabilitation campus outside Mumbai that's home to 300 women and children. They were the "most hopeful days" of the trip. They played cricket and sang songs with the children, many of whom are HIV positive.

"Those are the miracles, the 300 lives in Ashagram, those are 300 living miracles," Dickey said. "Sure (my daughters) heard about the wickedness and the darkness, but they got to actually see the redemption, so their response has been really positive. This is a seminal trip for them."

Dickey, who speaks openly with his daughters about his own sexual abuse, helped celebrate the opening of a clinic in the midst of Mumbai's red-light district. He helped pay for the clinic, raising over $100,000 by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro last winter.

"The facility is like a beacon of light in the middle of a swamp," he said.

BTC's Thomason Varghese said the organization was blessed by Dickey's presence.

"But we think we've been even more blessed by his daughters," Varghese said. "Just to see innocent girls loving our girls and playing with them with no inhibitions, it's just been a real joy for us to see and experience. There are friendships that have come through this despite how different their backgrounds are.

"Today the girls were in our feeding truck serving food to those who are coming from the street, just watching that was a sight to see."

While estimates of sex trafficking in India vary, most studies put the number at more than a million children involved in the country's sex trade.

Dickey was asked how can one measure success in the face of such grim statistics.

"If the organization rescues one human life from that hell, then it's done its job in some way," Dickey said. "You're talking over the last 23 years over 1,000 lives being rescued, given a second chance to have a life, rescuing children, people who were left for dead on doorsteps of these brothels. . .

"The women who had been trafficked into prostitution, dying in hospitals with their children by their bed, here's the Bombay Teen Challenge with a relationship in place to be able to take in and care for these children.

"How do you measure success? I think it's one life at a time."

a new opinion in Sports about PowaKaddy Deluxe Umbrella Holder

Product Type: PowaKaddy Golf

Newest Review:?... to keep picking up and putting down. I wouldn't be without one now and if you use a PowaKaddy then I'd say this is an essential purchas... more

I have to admit to being a bit of a fair weather golfer at times, but you can't avoid the rain all the time especially of late so the PowaKaddy umbrella holder is a great purchase.

I've used a PowaKaddy trolley for years now and am fortunate enough to play at a course whose Pro runs an authorised service centre so he always has any of the bits you might need. With dark clouds over the course I bought one of these for ?19.99 and they even fitted it for me while I went to change my shoes, fantastic service!

The holder bolts on through the handle so it feels really secure in use and can be adjusted forwards, backwards, left and right so you can always lean your brolly into the wind. This is a big plus over some other models which always struggle in the slightest breeze and look like they could snap any minute.

At 5'11'' I'm not the tallest golfer out there but I find there is plenty of head room underneath the umbrella when in the holder and I can comfortably walk along sheltered from the rain while my playing partners have to struggle with a trolley in one hand and a brolly in the other. Once I'm ready to play my next shot, I can choose my club while under the umbrella, think about my shot still under the umbrella, step out, play the shot and then straight back underneath and I've barely got wet.

This might not sound too special but it makes a huge difference. My grips stay dry, I stay dry and all the while my opponent is struggling with wet clubs and a brolly he has to keep picking up and putting down.

I wouldn't be without one now and if you use a PowaKaddy then I'd say this is an essential purchase for winter golf in the UK.

Summary: Does a great job and will save you shots in the rain

Egypt opposition leader wants national dialogue

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's liberal opposition leader has called for a broad national dialogue with the Islamist government, all political factions and the powerful military after the latest eruption of political violence left 60 dead over the past week.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei made the appeal on Wednesday, a day after the military warned the country could collapse under the weight of this turmoil.

President Mohammed Morsi, who was making a brief visit to Germany on Wednesday despite the crisis at home, has declared a state of emergency and night curfew in three restive provinces along the Suez Canal. But residents have defied the curfew since it took effect.

Morsi authorized governors of the three provinces to either cancel or limit curfew hours in an attempt to assuage public anger.

Analysis: Stuck in reverse, Detroit edges closer to bankruptcy

DETROIT (Reuters) - At the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month, luxury was in the air. Pricey new Bentleys and Maseratis glittered - including a Maserati 2014 Quattroporte with a $132,000 price tag; U.S. Cabinet Secretaries and dignitaries rubbed shoulders; and many of the well-heeled attendees ponied up for a $300-a-ticket black-tie charity ball.

But in a city that is slowly dying, the glitz didn't extend much beyond the Cobo Center exhibition hall.

General Motors Co and Chrysler , which along with Ford Motor Co gave the Motor City its identity, survived near-death experiences after filing for bankruptcy during the financial crisis. Now, Detroit itself is edging closer to a similar precipice, only unlike the automakers, its chances of getting a federal bailout are almost nonexistent.

The story of Detroit's decline is decades old: Its tax revenue and population have shrunk and labor costs have remained out of whack. But the city's budget problems have deepened to such an extent that it could run out of cash in a matter of weeks or months and ultimately be forced into what would be the largest-ever Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy filing in the United States.

Frustrated by the lack of concrete progress, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, a Republican, last month appointed a team to scour the city's books. The audit could result in a state takeover of Detroit's finances through the appointment of an emergency financial manager. Such a manager, who would seize control of the city's checkbook, could then propose federal bankruptcy court as the best option.

Snyder, who has called the situation "a crisis in terms of financial affairs," said the team would deliver its report in February.

"Detroit is teetering on the verge of bankruptcy after the City Council has failed to make the necessary cuts to deal with having a smaller population," said Rick Jones, chairman of the Republican majority caucus in the state Senate.

Jones, who has indicated he does not favor a bankruptcy, said he would like to see an emergency manager installed to fix the city's problems. If that failed, there would be a case for finding a way to shrink the Detroit municipal area, he argued.

Detroit's population is now just over 700,000 - down 30 percent since 1990 - but the city still has to provide services to an area encompassing more land than San Francisco, Boston and the borough of Manhattan.

While Democratic Mayor Dave Bing and the Detroit City Council have moved to reduce spending and initiate some reforms to stave off a takeover, including layoffs and wage and benefit cuts, the progress may not be enough for Michigan officials and lawmakers.

STREETS WITHOUT LIGHTS

In the booming post-Second World War era, Detroit was America's fifth-largest city. Today, it ranks 18th. In addition to a sharp population decline, it suffers from high unemployment related to a loss of businesses, a flood of home foreclosures and a cut in state funding. That has led to shriveling revenue, leaving the city unable to afford a workforce of more than 10,000 and the surging health and pension costs that go with them and with its retirees. As a result, credit ratings on Detroit's approximately $8.2 billion of outstanding debt have sunk deeper into junk territory.

The city's labor costs, including health care and pensions, are shrinking in absolute terms but rising as a share of the budget. They are slated to drop to $968 million, or nearly 49.5 percent of the operating budget, in the fiscal year ending June 30 versus $1.14 billion, or 45.5 percent, a year earlier.

Signs of decline are everywhere - in a rising crime rate, streets without lights and block after block of abandoned buildings. The murder rate of one per 1,719 people last year was more than 11 times the rate in New York City. The jobless rate is above 18 percent, more than twice rate for the country as a whole.

COLLISION COURSE

A bankruptcy would be messy.

The interests of creditors would likely collide with those of labor unions wanting to protect workers' benefits, said Eric Scorsone, a Michigan State University economist who has written papers on municipal bankruptcy and on the state's emergency manager laws.

"It is going to require the players - the City Council, the mayor, the state - to be on the same page. If you go into bankruptcy with a lot of conflict and dissent, it's going to cost more," said Scorsone.

It could also be racially explosive. Detroit has the largest percentage of black people of any U.S. city, with 83 percent of the population identifying themselves as African American, black or Negro, according to the 2010 U.S. census. Most of Michigan's state government, including the governor's office, is run by white Republicans.

Detroit Council Member JoAnn Watson, who along with two other members of the city's all-black City Council has been resisting reform measures, said she is still hopeful of a federal bailout or an injection of state money that she claims the city is owed.

Mayor Bing would not comment for this story.

CONSEQUENCES, WHAT CONSEQUENCES?

The automakers have little to say publicly about the crisis. Most of their operations in Michigan are now outside Detroit, and getting any top executive to even discuss the possibility of a city bankruptcy was almost impossible at the auto show. "I don't want to get into the politics," said GM CEO Dan Akerson, while Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said: "I don't see what the consequences would be for us."

One of the city's biggest challenges is its complex set of labor agreements with a whopping 48 bargaining units that represent most of the city's workforce.

Max Newman, a bankruptcy attorney at Michigan-based Butzel Long, said a Chapter 9 bankruptcy could help the city throw out its collective bargaining agreements with unions.

Costs would have to be tackled since Detroit cannot just jack up taxes to reduce the cumulative budget deficit, which grew to $326.6 million in fiscal 2012 from $196.6 million in fiscal 2011. The state would likely resist tax increases, and they might only make matters worse anyway. "If taxes go up any further it would exacerbate the flight out of the city," Newman said.

But for some of those who have seen Detroit struggle for years, bankruptcy is starting to look like the least awful option - even though it will be painful.

"I think...off and on, that it wouldn't be a bad idea," said former Ford chief financial officer Allan Gilmour, now the president of Detroit's Wayne State University. "Let's clean this out once and for all."

3D Systems, Stratasys Retrench As ExOne Sets IPO ... - Investors.com

The two leading makers of three-dimensional printers sold off with gusto Monday. 3D Systems (DDD) led the rock slide, losing 14% in five times its average trade.

Peer Stratasys (SSYS) shed 10% on a big volume bump.

Stratasys stopped at its 50-day moving average and 3D Systems stopped well above its 50-day line. The level of selling in both stocks was serious. In 3D's case, shares fell on the highest volume since a breakout in April.

The main news in the sector came from 3D printing company ExOne, which set terms Monday for its $75 million initial public offering.

The Pennsylvania-based company, which provides printing machines and printed products to industrial customers, plans to sell 5 million shares priced between 14 and 16. The company plans to list on the Nasdaq under the symbol XONE.

Its printers reportedly offer fast, low-cost prototypes made from metal, glass or ceramic powder. But there is no clear read yet, analysts say, on how the new and much smaller entrant may affect the competitive field.

The news arrived just as 3D Systems shares had reached a bit of a precarious position. The stock gapped up 5% last week, breaking above an upper channel line ? a line drawn across the highs since May .

A break above this line is a sell signal, a sign the stock's run may be weakening. In the case of 3D Systems, the signal's importance is compounded by the fact the stock has already broken out of a third-stage base.

Also, shares rose 86% above their 200-day moving average last week. Advances of 70% to 100% above a stock's 200-day moving average may also warn of weakness in a stock's uptrend.

Analysts' consensus forecast for the company's earnings is an increase of 138% in Q4 on a 49% gain in sales. The company will report before the market opens Feb. 25.

Stratasys is also above a third-stage base but it has given up most gains from its November breakout. It had run up as much as 33% from its buy point, vs. a 60% advance for 3D Systems.

Increasing severity of erectile dysfunction is a marker for increasing risk of cardiovascular disease and death

Jan. 29, 2013 ? A large study published in PLOS Medicine on January 29, 2013, shows that the risk of future cardiovascular disease and death increased with severity of erectile dysfunction in men both with and without a history of cardiovascular disease. While previous studies have shown an association between ED and CVD risk, this study finds that the severity of ED corresponds to the increased risk of CVD hospitalization and all-cause mortality.

The study authors, Emily Banks (from the Australian National University) and colleagues, analyzed data from the Australian prospective cohort 45 and Up Study. The authors examined the association between severity of self-reported ED and CVD hospitalization and mortality in 95,038 men aged 45 years and older, after adjusting for a number of potential confounding factors. The study included more than 65,000 men without known CVD at baseline and more than 29,000 men with known CVD. There were 7855 incident admissions for CVD during an average 2.2 years of follow-up ending in June 2010, and 2304 deaths during an average of 2.8 years of follow-up, ending in December 2010.

The authors found that, among men without known CVD, those with severe versus no ED had a relative 35% increase in risk of hospitalization for all CVDs, and a relative 93% increased risk of all-cause mortality. Among men with known CVD at baseline and severe ED, their increased risk of hospitalization for all CVDs combined was a relative 64% and for all-cause mortality, 137%.

The researchers say: "The findings of this study highlight the need to consider ED in relation to the risk of a wide range of CVDs." They also stress that it is unlikely that ED causes CVD; rather both are caused by similar underlying causes such as atherosclerosis. As a result, ED could serve as a useful marker to identify men who should undergo further testing to assess their risk for CVD.

Sundance Proves A Filmmaking Renaissance Is ... - Hope For Film

What would Variety, Hollywood Reporter, IndieWire, The Wrap, MovieCityNews, Filmmaker Magazine & Deadline report if a single film company took the following awards at Sundance this year?

  1. Narrative Grand Jury Prize
  2. Audience Award For Narrative Film
  3. Best Directing of a Narrative Film
  4. Best Directing of a Documentary Film
  5. Special Jury Award For Documentary Film #1
  6. Special Jury Award For Documentary Film #2

I can?t help but think they would announce the arrival of a powerhouse.

Well, allow me the pleasure of breaking such an announcement. ?In case you missed it: a filmmaking renaissance is happening in The Bay Area. ?All of the following films that premiered at Sundance and won an award there had a major Bay Area connection: Fruitvale, Afternoon Delight,?Cutie and the Boxer, Inequality For All, and American Promise.

I don?t know when was the last time a film won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance as Fruitvale?did this year. ?Not only is director Ryan Coogler from Oakland, not only was the story and subject from The Bay Area, not only was the film shot in The Bay Area, and not only was it mixed at Skywalker, but the San Francisco Film Society & The Kenneth Rainin Foundation granted the film $200,000.

If that wasn?t enough to crow about, allow me the thrill of mentioning that this is the second year in a row that a film supported by the?San Francisco Film Society?& The Kenneth Rainin Foundation won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. ?Yup, Beasts Of The Southern Wild received similar support last year as Fruitvale?did this year. ?Do we need non-profit support in order to make ambitious socially relevant cinema in America? ?It sure damn looks that way, and if it is not necessary, it sure helps! ?A market-driven entertainment economy encourages one thing; if we want diversity we must support our cultural institutions (and build new ones!).

But allow me to go on with the glory that this year?s Sundance has bestowed upon the cities by The Bay? ?I don?t know when the last time a producer had both a documentary film and a narrative film in each of the Sundance competition. ?I definitely don?t think a producer who managed that feat ever won awards for both films (okay, I once had a film in each section, but only one of them one an award). ?Winning an award for each of their films is exactly what 72 Productions accomplished with Afternoon Delight?s Best Directing of a narrative film award (directed by Jill Soloway) and Inequality For All?s U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award (directed by Jacob Kornbluth). ?And did you know that 72 Productions? Jen Chaiken sits on the San Francisco Film Society?s Board of Directors? And that the SFFS was Inequality For All?s fiscal sponsor? ?Surely you know that I4A?s incredibly inspiring subject, Robert Reich, teaches and lives in Berkeley, and yup, that is in The Bay Area. I imagine your collective head is now reeling in wonder about what is happening here; I know I am impressed, verily.

Yes, it?s true that the Directing Award at Sundance is one of the great honors. ?Yes, the aforementioned?Afternoon Delight?won that award for Narrative, and Cutie and the Boxer, directed by Zachary Heinzerling, won for Documentary. The San Francisco Film Society?s Doc Film Fund gave?Cutie and the Boxer?s $50,000? ?That ain?t chicken feed. ?And that?s a Bay Area connection for both sections? Directing Award. ?It must be something in the water!

But The Bay Area?s dominance continues on from there. It kind of takes your breathe away, doesn?t it? ?The other winner of a Special Jury Prize For Documentary Film,?Joe Brewster and Mich?le Stephenson?s?American Promise, ?also received funding from The San Francisco Film Society. How great is it to give money ?away to films that lift our culture up? ?I suppose you don?t know that feeling until you?ve done it, but know what? ?You too can do it and I will tell you how below?

Yup. Five films. ?Count ?em and tells what it all adds up to?

That is five films, six awards, at Sundance 2013 with Bay Area connections. ?Pretty awesome. ?In addition to all of that, the Bay Area was represented by other filmmakers at Sundance too; Rob Epstein?and Jeffrey Friedman were there with TWO films, one narrative, one doc: Lovelace and The Battle For AmFar. The list goes on and on and on.

That is not a rumbling you are feeling underground, that is the roar of a community?s heart beating as one, and quite rapidly at that mind you. ?You don?t just have to be from Poland to have that flutter (if you watched the Awards, you will understand the reference).

I think it is now abundantly clear that if you love independent film, if you want diverse, ambitious film to prosper, you have to act now. ?You must not delay. ?You can either pack your bags and get the hell out of town and arrive in Fog City or one of it?s many surrounding communities, or you can show your love for such cinema by helping to support the San Francisco Film Society. ?Either one will do. ?Just take some action. ?The momentum will carry you forward.

I am investing my time, labor, & mind to help building a better infrastructure for such cinema through the SFFS. ?But it takes more. ?Money almost always helps. ?Please consider doing what you can to keep this exciting time alive. ?Join SFFS & become a member. Support SFFS here. ?It takes more than a village if we are going to build it better. ?We can only do it together.

The San Francisco International Film Festival is the longest running film festival in the Americas. ?I hope to see you there this year ?(April 25- May 9th); we have some great stuff planned for you. ?The San Francisco Film Society was founded 56 years ago. ?It was built by the passion and commitment of several key individuals. ?We lost one of those individuals just as the Sundance Film Festival began this year. ?George Gund?s love and knowledge of cinema was as legendary as his great spirit and generosity. ?I can not help but think of how wide his grin would be now in knowing the legacy his support has helped build. ?Thank you, George.

When an ezine founder pushes? The principal reason for an electric newspaper (ezine) is always to market a product or service. OKAY, there, Ive said it. You want visitors to come to your website to see what you have or even to account the method at advertisers if you are an Internet publisher. If you?re an online business you desire to produce a comprehensive opt-in ezine that gift suggestions convincing data that in turn results in revenue from an educated client base. When an ezine manager presses too hard or explores procedures that are significantly less than dependable the result is a standing of being fully a spammer. One of the first questions any web business should ask themselves is Why should I develop a business ezine? You may want to rethink your answer you want to provide it a whirl and if the answer is merely because its a tool. Building an ezine can be labor-intensive correlate with a distinct purpose. You need to know what the intent of the ezine is likely to be before you can definitely get things rolling. You?ll probably find it better acquired among your opt-in number if you can form a plan for your ezine. Business owners could mistakenly believe that they ought to create an ezine for marketing purposes and only send whatever data moves them at any given moment. You?ll likely find consumers that opt-in will opt-out in short order if that is your method. It is equally important to respect the value of the time your client-base might spend with your ezine since you comprehend the value of time. The more planning and point to the ezine the higher it?ll be obtained. Look at it in this manner, if you have 1,000 motivated customers on a list that has 5,000 and each individual spends 5 minutes reading the material you send, the accumulated time your customers spend with your ezine is simply over 83 hours or around 3 (24 hour) times. If you send a regular ezine your customers will be likely found by you spending almost half of the season reading your material. To put that in perspective your young ones won?t take school as long as it requires determined clients to collectively read your material. You can do at least ensure it is worth reading if your customers will spend that much time reading your ezine. Develop your own personal material, but dont hesitate to utilize material from other professionals. These details can be obtained through your suppliers and can also be obtained through the use of free-to-use articles available on multiple sites. advanced web ranking review

Ed. Dept.: Disabled students must be given sports

By Philip Elliott, Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Students with disabilities must be given a fair shot to play on a traditional sports team or have their own leagues, the Education Department says.?

Disabled students who want to play for their school could join traditional teams if officials can make "reasonable modifications" to accommodate them. If those adjustments would fundamentally alter a sport or give the student an advantage, the department is directing the school to create parallel athletic programs that have comparable standing to traditional programs.

"Sports can provide invaluable lessons in discipline, selflessness, passion and courage, and this guidance will help schools ensure that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to benefit from the life lessons they can learn on the playing field or on the court," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement announcing the new guidance Friday.

The groundbreaking order is reminiscent of the Title IX expansion of athletic opportunities for girls and women four decades ago and could bring sweeping changes to school budgets and locker rooms for years to come.

Activists cheered the changes.

"This is a landmark moment for students with disabilities. This will do for students with disabilities what Title IX did for women," said Terri Lakowski, who for a decade led a coalition pushing for the changes. "This is a huge victory."

It's not clear whether the new guidelines will spark a sudden uptick in sports participation. There was a big increase in female participation in sports after Title IX guidance instructed schools to treat female athletics on par with male teams. That led many schools to cut some men's teams, arguing that it was necessary to be able to pay for women's teams.

Education Department officials emphasized they did not intend to change sports traditions dramatically or guarantee students with disabilities a spot on competitive teams. Instead, they insisted schools may not exclude students based on their disabilities if they can keep up with their classmates.

Federal laws, including the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, require states to provide a free public education to all students and prohibit schools that receive federal money from discriminating against students with disabilities. Going further, the new directive from the Education Department's civil rights division explicitly tells schools and colleges that access to interscholastic, intramural and intercollegiate athletics is a right.

The department suggests minor accommodations to incorporate students with disabilities onto sports teams. For instance, track and field officials could use a visual cue for a deaf runner to begin a race.

Some states already offer such programs. Maryland, for instance, passed a law in 2008 that required schools to create equal opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in physical education programs and play on traditional athletic teams. And Minnesota awards state titles for disabled student athletes in six sports.

Increasingly, those with disabilities are finding spots on their schools' teams.

"I heard about some of the other people who joined their track teams in other states. I wanted to try to do that," said Casey Followay, 15, of Wooster, Ohio, who competes on his high school track team in a racing wheelchair.

Current rules require Followay to race on his own, without competitors running alongside him. He said he hopes the Education Department guidance will change that and he can compete against runners.

"It's going to give me the chance to compete against kids at my level," he said.

Some cautioned that progress would come in fits and starts initially.

"Is it easy? No," said Brad Hedrick, director of disability services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and himself a hall-of-famer in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. "In most places, you're beginning from an inertial moment. But it is feasible and possible that a meaningful and viable programming can be created."

Russian parliament backs ban on 'gay propaganda'

Russian Interior Ministry officers detain two gay rights activists during an unsanctioned protest in front of the Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, in Moscow on Friday.

By Gabriela Baczynska and Alissa de Carbonnel, Reuters

Russia's parliament backed a draft law on Friday banning "homosexual propaganda," in what critics see as an attempt to shore up support for President Vladimir Putin in the country's largely conservative society.

Only one deputy in the State Duma lower house voted against the bill, but passions spilled over outside the chamber, where 20 people were detained after scuffles between Russian Orthodox Christians and gay activists who staged a "kiss-in" protest.

"We live in Russia, not Sodom and Gomorrah," United Russia deputy Dmitry Sablin said before the 388-1 vote in the 450-seat chamber. "Russia is a thousands-years-old country founded on its own traditional values - the protection of which is dearer to me than even oil and gas."

Veteran human rights campaigner Lyudmila Alexeyeva described the draft law as "medieval" and said it was intended to appeal to conservative voters after months of protests that have sapped Putin's popularity.

"It (the Duma) is relying on the ignorance of people who think homosexuality is some sort of distortion," she said.

The legislation has served to deepen divisions in society since Putin returned to the presidency in May and began moves seen by the opposition as designed to crackdown on dissent and smother civil society.

During the process, Putin and his supporters have underlined what they see as conservative, traditional Russian values.

He has drawn closer to the Russian Orthodox Church during this time, hoping the support of one of the most influential institutions in Russia will consolidate his grip on power.

Scuffles outside the Duma
In a sign of the passions caused by the bill, clashes broke out between supporters and opponents outside the Duma, a few hundred meters from the Kremlin in central Moscow.

Supporters, some of them holding Russian Orthodox icons and crosses, cheered and threw eggs as police hauled away gay activists, one of whom was splashed with green paint. Police said 20 people had been held.

The law must be passed in three readings by the lower house, approved by the upper house and then signed by Putin to go into force. It would ban the promotion of gay events across Russia and impose fines of up 500,000 roubles ($16,600) on organizers.

Supporters of the law welcome moves that would allow the banning of gay rights marches and complain about television and radio programs which they say show support for gay couples.

"The spread of gay propaganda among minors violates their rights," ruling United Russia party deputy, Elena Mizulina, who chairs the Duma's family issues committee. "Russian society is more conservative so the passing of this law is justified."

Putin's critics say the law is the latest in a series of legislative moves intended to stifle the opposition.

In a sign Kremlin-loyal lawmakers hope to eliminate all opposition in the house, two deputies who joined in street protests against Putin said on Friday that their Just Russia party threatened to kick them out if they continued to do so.

Public approval for Putin, who is now 60, stood in January at 62 percent, the lowest level since June 2000, an independent pollster said on Thursday.

Putin and the church
Putin, a former KGB spy who has criticized gays for failing to help reverse Russia's population decline, has increasingly looked for support among conservative constituencies and particularly the church to offset his falling support.

The Russian Orthodox Church, resurgent since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, has spoken out against homosexuality. Putin drew closer to the clergy during the trial and sentencing this summer of three members of the Pussy Riot punk band over their protest in the country's main cathedral.

Anti-gay propaganda laws are already in place in Arkhangelsk, Novosibirsk and St Petersburg, Putin's home city, where it was used unsuccessfully to sue American singer Madonna for $10 million for promoting gay love during a concert last year.

Some deputies raised concerns the bill would be misused, asking how it would define homosexuality, and one said the house was meddling in issues beyond its scope.

"Do you seriously think that you can foster homosexuality via propaganda?" the only deputy who voted against the bill, United Russia's Sergei Kuzin, challenged its authors during the debate.

Homosexuality, punished with jail terms in the Soviet Union, was decriminalized in Russia in 1993, but much of the gay community remains underground and prejudice runs deep.

In Moscow, city authorities have repeatedly declined permission to stage gay parades and gay rights' allies have often ended in arrests and clashes with anti-gay activists.

Exclusive: Samsung Total strikes Iran oil deal, lured by cheap fuel - sources

SINGAPORE/SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Samsung Total Petrochemicals Co has revived a contract to buy Iranian oil after a year's hiatus, as thin margins in plastics make the cheap fuel from Iran hard to resist, people familiar with the deal said on Friday.

Stringent U.S. and European sanctions aimed at reducing Iran's oil income and forcing Tehran to curb its nuclear program have made shipping and paying for the oil hard, halving the Islamic Republic's crude exports.

The deal is a rare example of a buyer returning to the market for Iranian oil despite the obstacles arising from sanctions and efforts by Western powers to stem the flow.

After jarring interruptions in exports from Iran last year that included a halt in shipments to top consumers Japan and South Korea, importers have found ways to keep oil flowing without violating sanctions.

The allure of cheap oil and improved margins has made it worthwhile for the South Korean joint venture between two big international firms to find ways around difficulties.

The deal may save Samsung Total as much as $6.7 million in costs, according to Reuters calculations.

"The deal can be easily understood if you look at Samsung Total's financial situation," according to a government source in Seoul with direct knowledge of the matter.

The company is a joint venture between South Korea's Samsung Group and French energy giant Total.

Spokespeople at Total, Samsung Total and the Samsung Group declined to comment.

Samsung Total stopped importing oil from Iran last year as the U.S. and European Union imposed sanctions to halt a nuclear program the West suspects Iran may be using to develop arms. Tehran denies this. To comply with U.S. sanctions, importing countries are required to reduce purchases of Iranian oil.

Co-owner Total also stopped buying Iranian oil for its refineries to comply with EU sanctions last year.

Replacing the Iranian oil forced up Samsung Total's input costs, contributing to a fall in operating profits, sources said. Those profits fell 90 percent in the second-quarter of 2012, according to the company's regulatory filings. The company switched to more expensive Australian and Russian condensate last year, sources said.

Samsung Total had an annual contract to buy about 550,000 barrels a month of Kangan condensate until June last year, although it is unclear if it actually imported the full volume during the first half of 2012. The volume of the new contract is unclear.

JOSTLING FOR IMPORTS

Other South Korean refiners will have to import less to make way for Samsung Total's new contract if Seoul is to comply with U.S. sanctions.

To renew six-month exceptions to sanctions granted by Washington, buyers of Iran's oil have to show continuous import cuts. South Korea's waiver is next due for review in May.

The north Asia nation slashed crude purchases from Iran 36 percent to 153,405 barrels per day (bpd) in 2012. If Samsung Total starts buying a similar-sized cargo every month, South Korea's imports from the OPEC member may rise by 10,000 bpd.

Condensate imports were not included when South Korean and U.S. officials discussed cuts in Iranian crude imports, the South Korean government official said. For talks due in May, it is unclear whether Iranian condensates would be included in the crude import data or whether it would be counted separately.

"The U.S. side may raise the issue with us when they next meet for talks if they spot higher imports of Iranian condensate," the official said. "In the talks with the United States last December, we only talked about a cut in Iranian crude oil imports. Iranian condensate was not discussed."

Samsung Total kicked off imports from Iran by buying 30,000 tonnes, or 280,000 barrels, of Kangan condensate, which will be delivered in March to the petrochemical company's plant in Daesan, the sources said.

Condensate is a light oil usually processed in a unit called a splitter to produce naphtha, to make petrochemicals.

Samsung Total is looking to diversify supply sources to feed expanded facilities. It is adding a new 140,000 bpd condensate splitter, due to start in August 2014. The company operates a 1 million tonne per year (tpy) ethylene cracker, a 90,000 bpd splitter and other petrochemical units in Daesan.

KANGAN CONDENSATE

Kangan is usually priced $1 or $2 per barrel cheaper than one of the alternatives, which is condensate from Australia's North West Shelf (NWS), traders said. Without any additional discount, the price difference means the Kangan cargo for March cost anything between $280,000 and $560,000 less than NWS.

If Samsung Total buys a same-sized cargo as the one for March each month for a year, annual savings would be as much as $6.7 million.

The company's operating profits fell to 5.52 billion won ($5.16 million) in the second quarter of 2012 from 68.04 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Canada's Flaherty vows tight spending to meet budget target

DAVOS, Switzerland (Reuters) - Canada's federal government must be very tough on spending or it won't be able to balance the budget as promised, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said in an interview.

Even faced with weaker-than-expected growth, which could dent revenues, Flaherty upheld Ottawa's pledge to return to fiscal balance by 2015.

"On the spending side we're being really tough and I'm being really tough and we need to be really tough or I won't be able to balance the budget, which we're going to do by 2015," he told Reuters at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Flaherty is expected to present his next budget in March.

Figures for the first eight months of the fiscal year showed the deficit narrowing gradually, and Ottawa expects a relatively small deficit in the 2012-13 fiscal year of C$25 billion ($24.79 billion).

The lowest inflation rate in three years in Canada also makes the job of balancing the budget more difficult.

The level of nominal gross domestic product, which is GDP plus inflation, directly affects tax revenues and muted inflation means the revenues will be lower than they would be otherwise.

Previous unknown fossilized fox species found

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Researchers from Wits University, the University of Johannesburg and international scientists announced on January 22, 2012, the discovery of a two million year old fossil fox at the now renowned archaeological site of Malapa in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.

In an article published in the journal Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa, the researchers describe the previously unknown species of fox named Vulpes Skinneri -- named in honour of the recently deceased world renowned South African mammalogist and ecologist, Prof. John Skinner of the University of Pretoria.

The site of Malapa has, since its discovery in 2008, yielded one of the most extraordinary fossil assemblages in the African record, including skeletons of a new species of human ancestor named Australopithecus sediba, first described in 2010.

The new fox fossils consist of a mandible and parts of the skeleton and can be distinguished from any living or extinct form of fox known to science based on proportions of its teeth and other aspects of its anatomy.

Dr. Brian Kuhn of Wits' Institute for Human Evolution (IHE) and the School of GeoSciences, an author on the paper and head of the Malapa carnivore studies explains: "It's exciting to see a new fossil fox. The ancestry of foxes is perhaps the most poorly known among African carnivores and to see a potential ancestral form of living foxes is wonderful."

Prof. Lee Berger, also of the IHE and School of GeoSciences, author on the paper and Director of the Malapa project notes: "Malapa continues to reveal this extraordinary record of past life and as important as the human ancestors are from the site, the site's contribution to our understanding of the evolution of modern African mammals through wonderful specimens like this fox is of equal import. Who knows what we will find next?."

The entire team has expressed their privilege in naming the new species after "John Skinner, one of the great names in the study of African mammals and particularly carnivores. We (the authors) think that John would be pleased, and it is fitting that this rare little find would carry his name forever."

Love triumphs over hate to make exotic new compound: Compound could be useful in batteries, semiconductors, memory devices

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Northwestern University graduate student Jonathan Barnes had a hunch for creating an exotic new chemical compound, and his idea that the force of love is stronger than hate proved correct. He and his colleagues are the first to permanently interlock two identical tetracationic rings that normally are repelled by each other. Many experts had said it couldn't be done.

On the surface, the rings hate each other because each carries four positive charges (making them tetracationic). But Barnes discovered by introducing radicals (unpaired electrons) onto the scene, the researchers could create a love-hate relationship in which love triumphs.

Unpaired electrons want to pair up and be stable, and it turns out the attraction of one ring's single electrons to the other ring's single electrons is stronger than the repelling forces.

The process links the rings not by a chemical bond but by a mechanical bond, which, once in place, cannot easily be torn asunder.

The study detailing this new class of stable organic radicals will be published Jan. 25 by the journal Science.

"It's not that people have tried and failed to put these two rings together -- they just didn't think it was possible," said Sir Fraser Stoddart, a senior author of the paper. "Now this molecule has been made. I cannot overemphasize Jonathan's achievement -- it is really outside the box. Now we are excited to see where this new chemistry leads us."

Sir Fraser is the Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern. In the late 1980s, he was one of the early pioneers to introduce an additional type of bond, the mechanical bond, into chemical compounds.

The new Northwestern compound has attractive electronic characteristics and can be made quickly and inexpensively. Down the road, it may be possible to expand this first linked pair into a longer chain-like polymer where this methodology could be useful in new technologies for batteries, semiconductors and electronic memory devices.

Driven by curiosity, Barnes only began to look at the radical chemistry of the ring cyclobis (paraquat-p-phenylene) two years ago, nearly 25 years after the ring was first made.

"I wondered what would happen if we took it all the way to the max," said Barnes, the paper's first author and a member of Stoddart's group. "Can we take two of these rings, each with four positive charges, and make them live together?"

The rings repel each other like the positive poles of two magnets. Barnes saw an opportunity where he thought he could tweak the chemistry by using radicals to overcome the hate between the two rings.

"We made these rings communicate and love each other under certain conditions, and once they were mechanically interlocked, the bond could not be broken," Barnes said.

Barnes' first strategy -- adding electrons to temporarily reduce the charge and bring the two rings together -- worked the first time he tried it. He, Stoddart and their colleagues started with a full ring and a half ring that they then closed up around the first ring (using some simple chemistry), creating the mechanical bond.

When the compound is oxidized and electrons lost, the strong positive forces come roaring back -- "It's hate on all the time," Barnes said -- but then it is too late for the rings to be parted. "That's the beauty of this system," he added.

Most organic radicals possess short lifetimes, but this unusual radical compound is stable in air and water. The compound tucks the electrons away inside the structure so they can't react with anything in the environment. The tight mechanical bond endures despite the unfavorable electrostatic interactions.

The two interlocked rings house an immense amount of charge in a mere cubic nanometer of space. The compound, a homo[2]catenane, can adopt one of six oxidation states and can accept up to eight electrons in total.

"Anything that accepts this many electrons has possibilities for batteries," Barnes said.

"Applications beckon," Stoddart agreed. "Now we need to spend more time with materials scientists and people who make devices to see how this amazing compound can be used."

I don't watch much television news and every so often it's good to be reminded why. A couple of days ago two self-inflating gas bags on Fox News - where else? - were releasing hot air all over Gabby Douglas and her double gold medal-winning gymnastics performance at the London Olympics. Alisyn Camerota, guest host of Fox's "America Live," pointed out that it was noticed by "some folks,"...? Read?More

You probably weren't at all wondering why 90-plus year old British mystery writer P. D. James thought I was gay. That's okay, I gave it enough thought for all of us. Me, my wife, Dana, and another couple recently indulged ourselves in a trans-Atlantic cruise from New York City to Great Britain via the Queen Mary II. Unlike the standard port-a-day cruises, we got on the ship in New York City and...? Read?More

It seemed as if the great Ray Bradbury always was and always would be, and it does not seem possible that he could die. Many will praise the extraordinary literary legacy he left behind with his death at age 91 - more than 27 novels, 600 short stories, and many classic short story collections, including "The Martian Chronicles," "Fahrenheit 451," "Dandelion Wine," and one of the the greatest...? And so, like the song says, another one bites the dust. In this case, "another one" is the New Orleans Times-Picayune, which sometime this fall will go out of business as a daily newspaper, leaving New Orleans as the largest city in the country without one. We should be used to this by now. The newspapers that now Rest In Peace include the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, the Seattle...? Read?More

There was a time, back long before the earth cooled, when you had to get up to change the channel! What! those who are not of a certain age may cry. Impossible! The horror! The brutality of it all! Trust me, it's in all the history books. And who is the man who helped lead us out of this dark and terrifying time? I give you Eugene Polley, inventor of the first wireless channel changer,...? A friend recently sent me a copy of an essay by the writer Hilary Mantel that confronted a problem faced by all historical novelists: How did those people talk? As Mantel, author of the excellent novel "Wolf Hall," pointed out, in any era the language in preserved letters, speeches and documents is much more formal than how people really spoke to each other. In Mantel's case, that era is Tudor...? Read?More

I have been asked time and time again - that makes twice - why I was interested in writing two novels about Sam Houston, a man whose name is well known but without anything specific coming to mind for most people. Which is one reason I wanted to write about him. He was, to say the least, colorful, which makes writing about him a lot more enjoyable. I'm sure there are people who yearn to write...? Read?More

My First Kombucha Brew - Real Food Forager

Post image for Guest Post: My First Kombucha Brew from Laura at wholegreenlove

Within the last year or so, kombucha has become one of my favorite beverages. The amazing benefits of this ancient, fermented drink are an appealing reason to partake. The B vitamins, organic acids, pH balancing qualities, and digestion benefits are enough to make me squeal with delight! But for me, I was sold on the taste alone. I?m not a soda drinker, but I can certainly appreciate a bubbly beverage every now and then. While some people would describe the taste of kombucha as vinegary, I think it has the perfect amount of sweetness to curb a sugary craving any day.

Anyone who has purchased bottle kombucha from the store knows that it can be pretty expensive. If my husband and I were going to incorporate this drink into our daily routine, I knew I needed to find a way to brew it at home. From our local health food store, I pay about $3.50 for a 16 oz bottle.

I knew by brewing it at home, I could make a gallon of this stuff for about $2. Talk about financial motivation.

I asked for a kombucha brew kit for Christmas and ordered my fresh SCOBY as soon as I received it. To kick off the New Year on January 1st, I brewed my first batch of kombucha. You can view Jill?s instructions on brewing a basic kombucha recipe here. I won?t bore you with the steps in this post because Jill?s instructions were very thorough and almost identical to those included with my brew kit.

One difference was that my kit suggested allowing the tea to ferment for a minimum of 14 days prior to giving the kombucha a taste test, instead of the 7 days that Jill mentions.

It?s So Easy!

I?m not exaggerating: If you can brew a pot of tea, you can make your own kombucha. It?s so easy.

My first batch of kombucha turned. out. awesome.

The flavor is the same as store bought kombucha and although the carbonation is just a bit less than the brand I buy from the store, I think it?s still delicious. My mom did a taste test and told me that she thought the carbonation was just right.

I learned a few things during my first kombucha brewing process

  • Fermention in our house (especially in the winter) probably takes longer than it needs to. Before our daughter was born, we kept our house pretty chilly in the winter to save on that heating bill. Now that Lyla is running around this place, we keep the temperature at a balmy 68 degrees. Still probably too cool for the kombucha, which should be kept in a 72-ish degree environment. I bet my brewing process will be nicely accelerated during the summer months!
  • I can?t justify the extra expense to crank up the heat in our home during our cold Wisconsin winters just to brew kombucha a little faster. Because of this temperature situation, I plan to brew my kombucha for 28 days in the winter and 14 days during the summer, especially if I?m looking for a little more carbonation.
  • Having a glass pitcher with a cap and old store bought kombucha bottles that have been run through the dishwasher are perfect vessels for your finished product. I keep a pitcher in the fridge and filled a few bottles to bring with me to work.

I have organic black and green tea on our grocery list so I can start the process again as soon as possible. I have a feeling that we will gulp through this batch of kombucha faster than we can have the next batch ready.

Once I go through this brew process a few times, I can definitely see myself transitioning to a continuous brew system. A never-ending supply of kombucha? I like the sound of that.
