Palestinians, Israeli Arabs mark "Land Day" with muted protests

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinians protested in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on Saturday and a few were lightly hurt in clashes with Israeli soldiers on the 37th anniversary of a landmark event for Israel's Arab minority.

The Palestinians and Israeli Arabs each commemorated the killing of six Arab citizens of the Jewish state by Israeli security forces during protests in 1976 over government land confiscations in northern Israel, an event known as "Land Day".

Two Israeli soldiers were also lightly hurt in a stone-throwing clash, one of a few at various locations in the occupied West Bank, as they used tear gas and other non-lethal means to disperse the rioters, an army spokeswoman said.

Palestinian medical sources said a handful of protesters were treated mainly for inhaling tear gas during the clashes that lasted about an hour.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said that as part of the day's events, he had planted an olive tree in the West Bank area known as E1 that Israel has earmarked for a future settlement.

Troops patrolling the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip used live fire to disperse protesters who came close to the fence, the military spokeswoman added. A Gaza hospital source said nobody was hurt.

Israel is wary of growing unrest in the Palestinian Territories, with peace talks stalled since 2010 and Palestinian leaders refusing to return to the negotiating table until Israel halts settlement building in the West Bank.

Most annual remembrances in Israel have largely passed off quietly. In the Israeli Arab town of Sakhnin, the center of the violence in 1976, thousands gathered for a rally which was addressed by lawmakers and community leaders.

Israel's Arabs make up about 20 percent of the Jewish state's population of almost eight million.

IBM Roadrunner retires from the supercomputer race

IBM Roadrunner retires from the supercomputer race

For all the money and effort poured into supercomputers, their lifespans can be brutally short. See IBM's Roadrunner as a textbook example: the 116,640-core cluster was smashing records just five years ago, and yet it's already considered so behind the times that Los Alamos National Laboratory is taking it out of action today. Don't mourn too much for the one-time legend, however. The blend of Opteron and Cell processors proved instrumental to understanding energy flow in weapons while also advancing the studies of HIV, nanowires and the known universe. Roadrunner should even be useful in its last gasps, as researchers will have a month to experiment with the system's data routing and OS memory compression before it's dismantled in earnest. It's true that the supercomputer has been eclipsed by cheaper, faster or greener competitors, including its reborn Cray arch-nemesis -- but there's no question that we'll have learned from Roadrunner's brief moment in the spotlight.

APNewsBreak: Gas trade group seeks fracking probe

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? A formal complaint filed with New York's lobbying board asks it to investigate whether Artists Against Fracking, a group that includes Yoko Ono and other A-List celebrities, is violating the state's lobbying law, according to the document obtained by The Associated Press.

The Independent Oil & Gas Association, an industry group that supports gas drilling, filed the complaint Tuesday with the state's Joint Commission on Public Ethics.

The complaint is based on an AP story that found that Artists Against Fracking and its members, including Ono, her son Sean Lennon, actors Mark Ruffalo and Robert De Niro and others, aren't registered as lobbyists and therefore didn't disclose their spending in opposition to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to remove gas from underground deposits.

"The public has been unable to learn how much money is being spent on this effort, what it is being spent on, and who is funding the effort," said Brad Gill, executive director of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of New York. "I understand the power of celebrity that this organization has brought to the public discussion over natural gas development, but I do not understand why this organization is not being required to follow the state's lobbying law."

The group confirmed it filed the complaint but didn't comment further.

Artists Against Fracking, formed by Ono and Lennon, says its activities are protected as free speech. The group was created last year amid the Cuomo administration's review to determine whether to allow hydraulic fracturing to remove gas from vast underground shale formations in southern and central New York.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo continues his review as public opinion has shifted from initial support based on the promise of jobs and tax revenue from drilling in economically depressed upstate New York to mixed feelings because of concerns over potential environmental and health effects.

Seven months after Artists Against Fracking was formed, the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute on March 20 found that New York voters were for the first time opposed to fracking, 46 percent to 39 percent.

"There's no doubt the celebrities had an effect," Quinnipiac pollster Maurice Carroll said. "As far as I can tell, they made all the difference."

A spokesman for Artists Against Fracking said the group and its individual members don't have to register as lobbyists.

"As private citizens, Yoko and Sean are not required to register as lobbyists when they use their own money to express an opinion and there's also no lobbying requirement when you are engaged in a public comment period by a state agency," spokesman David Fenton said.

"If the situation changes then, of course, Artists Against Fracking will consider registering," Fenton said. "Up to now, there has been no violation because they are entitled to do this as private citizens with their own money."

On its website, the group implores readers: "Tell Governor Cuomo: Don't Frack New York." Celebrities supporting the group have led rallies and performed in the song "Don't Frack My Mother," also carried on the Internet.

Ethics commission spokesman John Milgrim didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday. By law, the commission doesn't confirm or deny pending investigations.

New York's former lobbying regulator, attorney David Grandeau, said he believed the group and the supporting artists, including musicians Paul McCartney and Lady Gaga and actress Anne Hathaway, should be registered and required to disclose details on their efforts to spur public opposition to gas drilling.

"When you are advocating for the passage or defeat of legislation or proposed legislation and spend more than $5,000, you are required to register," Grandeau said Friday. "Just because you are a celebrity doesn't mean that lobbing laws don't apply to you. Your celebrity status does not protect you in Albany."

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons and developer Donald Trump are among the high-profile figures who clashed with the commission when Grandeau was regulator. The biggest penalty for failure to follow the lobbying law resulted in a $250,000 fine against Trump and others over casinos in 2000.

Rematch! It's Kirk vs. Gorn in this 'Star Trek' teaser

Captain Kirk and his infamous Gorn antagonist from the original series have it out again in this light-hearted ad for the new "Star Trek: The Video Game." Will they never bury the hatchet?

The Gorn are an alien species, reptilian and of great strength, one of which Kirk battled in an excellent demonstration of Starfleet martial superiority. It turns out Gorn aren't so great to have on your team, either, as the reprise of the match-up demonstrates.

While the game footage shown in the commercial looks like something out of the early 2000s, the ad is charming and may convince fans that "Star Trek: The Video Game" at least has its heart in the right place. The game arrives April 23 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Austrian police chase herd of cows through town

(AP) ? Austrian police and firefighters have taken on the role of urban cowboys in a two-day round-up of a herd of cows that broke out of a fenced-off pasture and decided to go into town.

A police statement says the 43 animals defied attempts by police and volunteer firefighters to recapture them after wandering off Thursday and heading toward the Upper Austrian town of Freistadt. After being chased away from the railway station, they endangered motorists by stampeding onto a two-lane highway before running into a town suburb.

Two firefighters who tried to stop them were injured and needed hospital treatment.

The statement says 18 of the animals remain on the loose Friday. The rest have been corralled or tranquilized.

Filipino Catholics crucify themselves

SAN PEDRO CUTUD, Philippines (AP) ? Devotees in villages in the northern Philippines took part in a bloody annual ritual to mark Good Friday, a celebration that mixes Roman Catholic devotion and Filipino folk beliefs and sees some reenact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The crucified devotees spent several minutes nailed to crosses in Pampanga province while thousands of tourists watched and took photos of the spectacle, which the church discourages. Earlier in the day, hooded male penitents trudged through the province's villages under the blazing sun while flagellating their bleeding backs with makeshift whips. Others carried wooden crosses to dramatize Christ's sacrifice.

Devotees undergo the hardships in the belief that such extreme sacrifices are a way to atone for their sins, attain miracle cures for illnesses or give thanks to God.

Alex Laranang, a 58-year-old vendor who was the first to be nailed to a cross Friday, said he was doing it "for good luck and for my family to be healthy."

It was the 27th crucifixion for sign painter Ruben Enaje, 52, one of the most popular penitents from San Pedro Cutud village. He began his yearly rite after surviving a fall from a building.

Enaje screamed in pain as men dressed as Roman soldiers hammered stainless steel nails into his palms and feet. A wireless microphone carried his voice to loudspeakers for everyone watching to hear.

His cross was raised and he was hanged there for several minutes under the searing afternoon sun before the nails were pulled out and he was taken on a stretcher to a first aid station.

"It's intriguing and fascinating what makes people do something like this, how you can believe so much that you make yourself suffer to that extent," said Dita Tittesass, a tourist from Denmark.

Remigio de la Cruz, the chief of San Pedro Cutud village, explained that the practice began in his village in the 1950s.

Archbishop Jose Palma, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, told the church-run Radio Veritas that the practice is "not the desire of Jesus Christ."

"We are aware that this has been practiced long before ... but we still hope that this will not be done any more," he said. "We should all concentrate on prayers."

Gabon jails activist for defaming ally of president

LIBREVILLE (Reuters) - A prominent environmental activist was sentenced to six months in prison for defamation in Gabon, his lawyer said on Friday, after he accused an ally of the president of secretly owning the local unit of commodities giant Olam International.

Marc Ona Essangui said during a television broadcast that President Ali Bongo's chief of staff, Liban Souleymane, controlled Olam Gabon, which is developing timber, palm oil and rubber projects in the tiny Central African nation.

Souleymane denied the allegation and brought a defamation case against him, which we won in a Libreville court.

"I regret this decision against my client, who was only fulfilling his role of a counterweight (to the government). I will consult with my client and possibly appeal this decision," Ona Essangui's lawyer Ruphin Nkoulou said.

The court also ordered Ona Essangui to pay a fine of 5 million CFA francs ($9,800). The state prosecutor had requested a one-year jail sentence.

During his first appearance in court on March 9, the wheelchair-bound activist said he did not regret making the accusation. "If I had it to do over again, I'd do the same thing," he said at the time.

Olam began operating in Gabon in 1999, establishing a logging operation. It later entered into a joint venture with the Gabonese state to develop plantations and palm oil mills with planned investments of around $236 million.

Gabonese environmental groups have for the past three years requested publication of the joint venture agreement without success.

Ona Essangui was jailed briefly in 2008 after calling for more transparency in the country's public management. ($1 = 510.8300 CFA francs)

Japan jobless rate up, prices, manufacturing fall

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan's jobless rate edged higher and industrial production fell slightly in February as consumer prices also fell, underscoring the fragility of the recovery of the world's third-largest economy.

The government data released Friday showed the main consumer price index fell 0.3 percent from a year earlier as deflation continued to defy the combined efforts of the government and central bank to move toward a 2 percent inflation target. However the CPI was up 0.1 percent from January's figure.

Unemployment rose to 4.3 percent from 4.2 percent the month before, while industrial production slipped by 0.1 percent in the first decline in three months. The unemployment rate for those below the age of 35 is significantly higher, at over 6 percent.

Japan's central bank governor, Haruhiko Kuroda, said Thursday that he believed the economy was improving after years of stagnation and would enter a moderate recovery by midyear. But he acknowledged high uncertainty because of the global economy.

Kuroda has pledged to work with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government in achieving the 2 percent inflation target set in January, preferably within two years, and ending years of growth-inhibiting deflation.

After taking power late last year, Abe's administration embarked on an aggressive stimulus program of government spending, monetary easing and planned reforms aimed at improving Japan's competitiveness. Revised figures show Japan's economy likely emerged from a recession late last year, but other data has been mixed.

The government's strategy will depend on getting consumers, whose spending accounts for the lion's share of economic activity, to spend more, and that in turn will hinge on encouraging companies to raise wages and increasing higher. Many companies huge cash reserves after having shed debt from the collapse of the economic bubble over 20 years ago but are wary of increasing investment given the existing weak demand and the aging and shrinking of the Japanese population.

Friday's data, coupled with signs of weakening retail sales, show the scale of the challenge in restoring consumer confidence.

By boosting inflation, Japan's planners hope to persuade consumers to spend more now in anticipation of price increases in the future. That could prove a daunting challenge given a drop in real wages over the past two decades and the weak job market, said Susumu Takahashi, head of the Japan Research Institute and a member of a government economic advisory council.

To achieve the inflation target the government must change expectations, he said.

"The only way is for the deflationary way of thinking to change. Without that it will be very hard," he said.

Speaking to lawmakers about the central bank's semiannual report, Kuroda said prices are unlikely to rise for the next few months but after that Japan would see some progress toward its inflation target as the economy moved toward a "moderate recovery path."

The central bank asset purchases and other strategies adopted so far have not been sufficient to reach the inflation target, he said, reiterating his intention to manage market expectations and "make clear that we have adopted the uncompromising stance that we will do whatever is necessary to overcome deflation."

Kuroda was appointed to succeed former BOJ governor Masaaki Shirakawa when he stepped down on March 19, three weeks before his term expired. The parliament is expected to approve his appointment to the five-year term, which is due to begin April 8.

The central bank is due to hold its first regular policy meeting under Kuroda April 3-4, though it may wait until later in the month to embark on any significant moves, such as a boosting its purchases of government bonds to help increase the amount of money available in the economy and encourage more investment by the private sector.

George Zimmerman's brother says Twitter rant a "mistake"

By Barbara Liston

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The brother of George Zimmerman, the man charged in the 2012 shooting death of unarmed black Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, said on Wednesday he was wrong to tweet a series of racially charged comments about his brother's case.

"I made a mistake," Robert Zimmerman Jr. said during an appearance on CNN's Piers Morgan Live. "It unfortunately may not have helped George."

George Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder for killing Martin, who was 17, after an altercation in a residential neighborhood in Sanford, Florida.

Prosecutors contend George Zimmerman, then a neighborhood watch captain, racially profiled Martin, then pursued and shot him while Martin was returning from a convenience store to a townhouse where he was staying with his father.

Robert Zimmerman this week posted side-by-side photos of Martin and one of two teenagers arrested last week in a fatal shooting of a 13-month-old boy as his mother was pushing his stroller down the street in a coastal Georgia town.

The separate photos showed Martin and the teenager posing while making an obscene gesture.

Robert Zimmerman wrote in a tweet, "a picture is worth a thousand words ... any questions?" In another tweet, he said, "Lib media shld ask if what these2 black teens did 2 a woman&baby is the reason ppl think blacks mightB risky."

Morgan, in his interview with Zimmerman, called the tweets "incendiary" and "bordering on outright racism."

"I understand this was controversial and I apologize," Robert Zimmerman said.

Mark O'Mara, George Zimmerman's lawyer, has criticized Robert Zimmerman's tweets.

George Zimmerman's trial is set to start in June.

Mantis shrimp are crustaceans, a group of animals that includes crabs and lobsters. Resembling cartoon characters, the small animals sport?oddly shaped?antennae that detect chemicals.?Stiff, paddlelike flaps on the sides of their heads probably act as ears. Spines often decorate their tails. Big eyes on stalks bug out from their heads. And the animals come in dazzling colors, including green, pink, orange and electric blue.

But don't let their dazzling colors fool you. These critters can be very violent. When marine biologist Roy Caldwell tapped a tank to provoke a mantis shrimp, the animal smashed back. ?It broke the glass and flooded the office,? recalls Caldwell.

The Silver Anniversary of Arkansas Mountain Biking ? Arkansas ...

On July 24, 1988,?Devil?s Den State Park Superintendent Wally Scherrey, drafted a letter to Don Ross, Regional Park Manager, requesting that he and Tim Scott, Devil?s Den Park Interpreter, be authorized for out-of-state travel. They got lucky, and so did we. At the time the parks were?severely?underfunded and travel was kept to a bare minimum, going to another state was pretty much out of the question. Their proposed destination was Crested Butte, Colorado from September 12th through the 16th.. Jon Brown, current Parks Operations Manager was a superintendent at another park at the time and remembers a little jealousy in the field when Wally and Tim were granted permission to go.

Tim Scott getting some of the riders organized.

Park staff getting some of the riders organized.

Mountain biking was a relatively new outdoor sport and it was gaining?momentum?out west. Tim Scott told me that he had been in discussions with park managers from surrounding states around that time about how mountain biking might affect trail use in the parks. Most were separated into two camps on the issue: either they weren?t really seeing much mountain biking and didn?t expect to, or they had already banned mountain bikes from park trails. At the time, a fear of pedal powered bikes damaging trails caused groups like the Sierra Club and the National Park Service to lump them in with gas powered off-road vehicles like dirt bikes and ATVs. In turn, land managers were skeptical of allowing them on trails that they were responsible for maintaining. Luckily for Arkansas, Tim and Wally wanted more information.

They requested $40 each for registration to the event and use of a park vehicle along with the gas. The plan was to camp and pay for their own meals. They took the bikes they had. Wally told me that they camped on a hill above the town and rode their bikes ?to the festival so they wouldn?t have to deal with any parking charges. He said, ?I?d never gone that fast on a bicycle as that ride into town.? I?m guessing the ride back to camp was not as quick.

A popular event at many mountain bike festivals is the bike or "Huffy" toss.

A popular event at many mountain bike festivals is the bike or ?Huffy? toss.

Once they were back in Arkansas they had to decided what to do about mountain bikers. A few had already started showing up on some of the trails in the park. Should they ban them, encourage them or wait for this fad to go away?

Bike polo has also been around in Arkansas for a long time.

Bike polo has also been around in Arkansas for a long time.

Arkansas State Parks has always been tasked with balancing recreational use of the parks with protecting the resources and the budgetary?constraints?of maintaining trails and other facilities. Working with others in the park system, Wally and Tim opted for managing this new park user by embracing mountain biking in the park, setting rules to follow, making some trails off-limits and teaching them how best to interact with other trail users. To kick this off they decided to have their own mountain bike festival.

How low can you go? Still a popular game at mountain bike events.

How low can you go? Still a popular game at mountain bike events.

The first Ozark Mountain Bike Festival was held on April 1st and 2nd, 1989 at Devil?s Den State Park just south of Fayetteville, Arkansas. It was sponsored by Arkansas State Parks and Paul?s Bike Shop. In an article from the Arkansas Democrat on March 31st, Vickie Smith of Paul?s Bike Shop said, ?In other states, the parks departments are opposed to the sport and try to stop it.? Wally Scherrey was quoted as saying, ? In the past two years, we?ve seen more and more people asking where the best places are to ride in the park, so we decided to get involved in a positive way.?

Slow Race - Last one to the finish line wins.

Slow Race ? Last one to the finish line wins.

On Saturday, April 1st, guided bike tours, bike polo, limbo, a slow race, trials riding and other social events were scheduled. On Sunday they planned for races in the morning. (It rained on Sunday of course, those who?ve raced at Devil?s Den in the past know that races there often draw rain.)

Other techniques for slipping under the bar.

Other techniques for slipping under the bar.

Besides Vickie, Tim and Wally also enlisted the help of a well known bike racing official, Steve Shepherd. Most cyclists who?ve raced road or mountain bikes know Steve. There were already mountain bike races in Arkansas at this point and Steve, along with Pat Barron (owner of Chainwheel in Little Rock) had helped at races in Boyle and Allsop Parks. Races were not yet sanctioned and no officiating was really needed but it helped to have someone around who knew how to organize these things. Steve told me, ?I had developed a computer program for scoring stage races to use at the Fayetteville Spring Classic (now the Joe Martin Memorial Stage Race). ?So I was asked to help administer/officiate the first Devil?s Den Race and bring my computer program along.? Steve also helped lead some of the rides.

More log pulling...

More log pulling?

The whole thing was a success and now, 25 years later the event is still going strong. A few years after the first festival, the racing and trials portion was moved to the fall and eventually became part of the Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship Series. The Ozark Mountain Bike Festival is still a great place to take the family, let the kids get their tires dirty and just have a great time enjoying this historic park from behind the?handlebars.

The Arkansas State Park system has grown to embrace mountain biking and currently maintains mountain bike trails in 10 state parks with more in the planning stages. Three of the ten races in the Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship Series are hosted in state parks including the Northwest Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship at Devil?s Den. Tim Scott is now the Assistant Park Superintendent at Devil?s Den State Park and can still be found on a mountain bike or working with local mountain biking clubs to promote the sport. Wally Scherrey became Park Superintendent at Petit Jean State Park, he left Devil?s Den shortly after the Colorado trip but came back for the festival and led one of the bike tours. He is still at Petit Jean and recently helped get a new bike path developed and built in that park from the campground to Mather Lodge.

A final paragraph at the bottom of the Second Annual Ozark Mountain Bike Festival program (1990) reminds us of our responsibility as mountain bikers to the trails and others:

BE A CREDIT TO OUR SPORT. Trail riding, the essence of mountain biking, is a privilege. To keep it, we must strive for minimal impact on the land and our fellow trail users. Off the bike, we should maintain bike organizations, and work with land managers to ensure safe, enjoyable, and environmentally sound passages for everyone. Responsible, considerate, and involved mountain bikers are the key to the sport?s future. Please do your part. Thanks!

The Silver Anniversary of the event is April 5-7. Make your plans to be a part of this great Arkansas event. Tim and staff have guided rides, kids games (adults often take part) and even a poker ride (best hand wins) planned. If you prefer the faster kind of mountain biking, the Northwest Arkansas Mountain Bike Championship will be held on September 14, 2013.

Special thanks to Tim Scott, Wally Scherrey and Steve Shepherd for information on the festival history. If you have stories, photos or video from the festival please feel free to share with us on our Contact Us page. We?d love to do a follow up article and share your memories with the park staff.

'The Voice' season premiere promises to be 'best episode' ever

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Get ready for some chair-spinning action -- "The Voice" returns for an all-new season of the talent competition Monday night. But this time, the would-be contestants won't be the only new part of the show.

Coaches Usher and Shakira are joining the act, filling the spots vacated by Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green -- not that the shakeup should concern faithful fans. According to host Carson Daly, the new additions just add to the appeal.

"You're looking at a guy that could have been on any one of these (TV? talent) shows," Daly said, gesturing toward Usher, who joined him on TODAY Monday morning. "But him and Shakira, they were fans of 'The Voice,' and that was a great place to start."

It's especially great for fellow fans, who have high hopes for season four.

"(Monday night) is the best episode of 'The Voice' ever," Daly added, "and it's in large part to Usher and Shakira, Blake (Shelton) and Adam (Levine)."

As for Usher, he offered a sneak peek of the talent reviews to come by evaluating TODAY's Matt Lauer -- who didn't even sing.

"Well, the first thing that I have to make you aware of is that you were incredible -- an incredible talent," the singer said with a smile before demonstrating how he would persuade Lauer to join his team. "In my opinion, I think that you need a coach that really understands how to nurture your talent. Now you've heard from the rest of them, you need to rock with the best of them."

See just how the actual auditioners handle the evaluations when the "The Voice" returns Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Are you looking forward to seeing what Usher and fellow new coach Shakira bring to "The Voice"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Evernote (Web)

Note-taking and -syncing application Evernote (free to $45 per year for Premium) is one of those applications that you either get or struggle to understand its purpose. In brief, Evernote has a text editor, photo upload tool, and voice recording device, and you can use any of these core components separately or in combination, to upload content to your account. The program saves all your thoughts, notes, recipes, photos?whatever you upload?in the cloud so that you can get to them from your computer, smartphone, tablet, or really anywhere you have an Internet connection and a browser with Evernote's Web app (which is the focus of this review).

With excellent features for organizing, finding, and editing all those notes, Evernote is a clear Editors' Choice service, and the Web app is an integral part of it because it makes good on Evernote's promise that you can get to your content from virtually anywhere.

Nothing has affirmed my faith in Evernote so much as testing the recently released Google Keep (free, 2.5 stars), a pitifully lightweight note-taking application whose relationship to Google Drive (free, 4 stars) is baffling. (Keep is entirely separate from all Google Drive content, yet it's accessed via drive.google.com/keep.) Perhaps a more mature competitor to Evernote is Microsoft OneNote (which is part of SkyDrive). Evernote and OneNote are hardly identical in their feature sets, but they're quite similar in basic functionality. Both have downloadable versions in addition to their Web versions. Overall, though, Evernote blows OneNote out of the water in terms of how and how well it helps you organize, find, and edit your notes. More importantly, Evernote integrates with dozens of other third-party tools, not to mention other useful apps and plug-ins under the Evernote umbrella (for example, Evernote Web clipper is a browser plug-in that quickly saves the contents of a Web page without making you copy and paste anything). The service just can't be beat.

Evernote Web Features
Evernote's Web app has three panes: one for notebooks and tags at the left; a preview or list view of all notes that meet search criteria in the center; and the full viewing or editing area of any selected note on the right.

The core features in Evernote's online app mirror the basics of the desktop app ?and mobile versions, such as the Evernote iPhone app and Android app. As mentioned, you can type directly in the app to create a text note, speak at the app to record a voice memo, and upload images and documents. These three types of content (text, audio recording, and uploaded documents) can be combined in one note. For example, it's possible to create a note about a wine you're drinking that has a typed description, photo of the bottle's label, and audio recording of your tasting notes.

As in all the other versions of Evernote, the Web account gives you access to a lovely set of organizational tools: tags, notebooks, and stacks, which are groups of notebooks. These tools appear along the leftmost side, and you can adjust the size of the pane by clicking and dragging on its borders. Click on any tag or notebook, and the center pane refreshes to show content in that notebook or which contains that tag. An additional text search bar at the top lets you further refine a search while also displaying selected criteria. For example, you could select a notebook called Work Meetings, a tag for "executive team," and type into the search bar "project cryptonym" to find all the notes that meet all the criteria. Additionally, if you have any uploaded images that contain the words "project cryptonym"?even if they are handwritten on a scrap of paper or whiteboard?Evernote will find them and highlight them for you in yellow in the search results (see the slideshow for an example). This OCR feature isn't foolproof, but it's an incredible addition that's available in both free and Premium accounts.

From the Evernote Web account, you can open a note and edit it, leveraging a good array of formatting tools, such as bold font, alignment options, and a variety of fonts to use. The Web version even has a button that lets you insert a checkbox for making to-do lists.

What's more difficult to do in Evernote's Web app?but entirely effortless in the mobile apps?is add a location. With a smartphone or tablet, Evernote can automatically log your location, whereas the online version requires you to type in latitude and longitude.

Evernote Premium vs. Free
Evernote Premium costs $5 per month or $45 per year and adds some noticeable perks to the free Evernote account. Free account holders can only upload 60MB of data per month, whereas paid users max out at 1GB per month, which comes in handy if you upload a lot of images and documents or clip a lot of Web pages. When Premium users enter search terms, Evernote not only scans typed content and images, but also hunts through PDFs.

Another perk for Premium users is offline notebooks, which isn't a concern when using the Web app but does come in handy on mobile devices. This feature lets you save the most recent copy of selected notes locally on your device so they're available to read and edit when you don't have an Internet connection.

Premium users can give other users the ability to edit a note, adding collaboration to the experience. When you decide to share a notebook, you can to make the files viewable only, or both viewable and editable. You can require that they be an Evernote account holder or not. When you're ready to share, one click sends a short email with a link to the files. (For additional details about Evernote Premium accounts, see Evernote's information page).

Forever Note
You can do a lot with the free version of Evernote, and I would only recommend upgrading to Premium if you're so committed to Evernote that it will be your one-and-only note-making app. Luckily, committing to Evernote is not a difficult decision. It's easily the best note-taking app you'll find, in part because it integrates with so many other programs and services, but also because of its thoughtful features and excellent search tools. The Evernote Web app is just one critical piece of this Editors' Choice service. If you want to get organized, Evernote deserves your attention.?

Cyprus clinches last-ditch bailout deal

EU and IMF officials struck a last minute deal with Cyprus, which includes a levy on uninsured deposits over 100,000 euros in the nation's second largest bank. CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera reports.

By Annika Breidthardt and Jan Strupczewski, Reuters

BRUSSELS - Cyprus clinched a last-ditch deal with international lenders on Monday for a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout that will shut down its second largest bank and inflict heavy losses on uninsured depositors, including wealthy Russians.

The agreement emerged after fraught negotiations between President Nicos Anastasiades and heads of the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund - hours before a deadline to avert a collapse of the banking system.

The plan, swiftly endorsed by euro zone finance ministers, will spare the east Mediterranean island a financial meltdown by winding down Popular Bank of Cyprus, also known as Laiki, and shifting deposits below 100,000 euros to the Bank of Cyprus to create a "good bank".

Deposits above 100,000 euros, which under EU law are not guaranteed, will be frozen and used to resolve debts, and Laiki will effectively be shuttered, with thousands of job losses.

An EU spokesman said no levy would be imposed on any deposits in Cypriot banks. A first attempt at a deal last week collapsed when the Cypriot parliament rejected a proposed levy on all deposits.

Related: Crisis in tiny Cyprus creates big mess for Europe

A senior source involved in the talks said Anastasiades had threatened to resign at one stage if he was pushed too far.

Police in Cyprus say masked men tossed a small bomb into a bank that damaged the entrance. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

EU diplomats said the president, flown to Brussels in a private jet chartered by the European Commission, had fought to preserve the country's business model as an offshore financial centre drawing huge sums from wealthy Russians and Britons.

The key issues in dispute were how Cyprus would raise 5.8 billion euros from its banking sector towards its own financial rescue, and how to restructure and resolve the outsized banks.

The EU's economic affairs chief Olli Rehn said there were no good options but "only hard choices left" for the latest casualty of the euro zone crisis.

With banks closed for the last week, the Central Bank of Cyprus imposed a 100-euros per day limit on withdrawals from cash machines at the two biggest banks to avert a run.

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici rejected charges that the EU had brought Cypriots to their knees, saying it was the island's offshore business model that had failed.

"To all those who say that we are strangling an entire people ... Cyprus is a casino economy that was on the brink of bankruptcy," he told Canal Plus television.

The euro gained against the dollar on the news in early Asian trading.

Analysts had said failure to clinch a deal could cause a financial market selloff, but some said the island's small size - it accounts for just 0.2 percent of the euro zone's economic output - meant contagion would be limited.

The abandoned levy on bank deposits had unsettled investors since it represented an unprecedented step in Europe's handling of a debt crisis that has spread from Greece, to Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Anxious mood
In the Cypriot capital, Nicosia, on Sunday the mood was anxious.

"I haven't felt so uncertain about the future since I was 13 and Cyprus was invaded," said Dora Giorgali, 53, a nursery teacher who lost her job two years ago when the school she worked at closed down.

"I have two children studying abroad and I tell them not to return to Cyprus. Imagine a mother saying that," she said in a central Nicosia square. "I think a solution will be found tonight but it won't be in the best interests of our country."

Virginia Mayo / AP

Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris, left, yawns as he listens during a media conference after an emergency eurogroup meeting in Brussels on Monday.

Cyprus's banking sector, with assets eight times the size of its economy, has been crippled by exposure to Greece, where private bondholders suffered a 75 percent "haircut" last year.

Without a deal by the end of Monday, the ECB said it would cut off emergency funds to the banks, spelling certain collapse and potentially pushing the country out of the euro.

Conservative leader Anastasiades, barely a month in office and wrestling with Cyprus' worst crisis since a 1974 invasion by Turkish forces split the island in two, was forced to back down on his efforts to shield big account holders.

Anticipating a run when banks reopen on Tuesday, parliament has given the government powers to impose capital controls.

Parliament
About 200 bank employees protested outside the presidential palace on Sunday chanting "troika out of Cyprus" and "Cyprus will not become a protectorate".

In a stunning vote on Tuesday, the 56-seat parliament rejected a levy on depositors, big and small. Finance Minister Michael Sarris then spent three fruitless days in Moscow trying to win help from Russia, whose citizens and companies have billions of euros at stake in Cypriot banks.

On Friday, lawmakers voted to nationalize pension funds and split failing lenders into good and bad banks - the measure likely to be applied to Laiki. The plan to tap pension funds was shelved due to German opposition, a Cypriot official said.

The revised bailout plan many not require further parliamentary approval since the idea of a levy was dropped.

The tottering banks hold 68 billion euros in deposits, including 38 billion in accounts of more than 100,000 euros - enormous sums for an island of 1.1 million people which could never sustain such a big financial system on its own.

(AP) ? Florida Gulf Coast became the first 15 to reach the Sweet 16, and the Eagles not only made it look easy, they made it look fun.

Little-known FGCU beat San Diego State 81-71 on Sunday night, its second NCAA tournament upset of the weekend. Just like in their opening win over second-seeded Georgetown ? the Eagles' calling card to the nation ? there were plenty of laughs, dunks and dances.

"We don't take ourselves too seriously," said Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield, whose players tossed him in the air and doused him with water in a raucous celebration before his postgame interviews. "We try to have fun, get serious when we have to.

"Our goal was to make history and we did it."

With its campus in Fort Myers, Florida Gulf Coast opened its doors to students in 1997. The university only became eligible for postseason play last year. Now the next opponent for the upstart state school will be the system's flagship university, third-seeded Florida, on Friday night in the South Regional semifinal in Dallas.

"We tried to scrimmage them early in the season in the preseason," Enfield said. "Now we get our shot."

Bernard Thompson had 23 points and Sherwood Brown added 17 for FGCU, the Atlantic Sun champion.

In their first-ever NCAA tournament game on Friday, the 15th-seeded Eagles busted brackets everywhere with a win over Georgetown, a game in which they took control with a 21-2 run in the second half.

It went much the same way against seventh-seeded San Diego State.

This time the run was 17-0 and Brown, who was saddled early in the second half with foul trouble, had eight of the first 10 points of it. When it was over the Eagles led 71-52 with 4:19 to play and the only decisions left were how the players and fans were going to celebrate.

Brown stuck out his tongue after every big basket, often in the direction of the hundreds of Eagles fans jammed into one section.

Even when the game was tight, he and his teammates looked they were glad to be on the court. The Eagles waved their arms and played along with a lively crowd that came to see an upset. There were big smiles and high-fives.

In short, they showed a kind of joy that's often missing from high stakes, high drama games in March.

"We're all about having fun and also playing really hard and that's something we like to do, we like to get the crowd involved," said Brown, the A-Sun's player of the year. "The whole crowd got behind us even if they are not from Fort Myers, or as I like to say, 'Dunk City.'"

It turns out a rap video called "Dunk City" sprang up overnight in praise of the Eagles.

The notoriously tough Philly fans jumped on the bandwagon, too. One seated behind the FGCU bench held a sign ? "Fly, Eagles, Fly!" ? the motto of the NFL team that plays across the street from the Wells Fargo Center.

And after it was all over, the whole team joined in a bird dance that the players on the bench had been doing during the game.

"I know I can say for all the players, this was the biggest game for us. None of us have played on this stage," point guard Brett Comer said. "We are blessed to be here."

FGCU played like it had nothing to lose. And really, the Eagles didn't. Given their school's short history, nobody expected them to win a game at the NCAA tournament, let alone two.

"They play with a swagger, and they have a right to do that," said San Diego State coach Steve Fisher, who knows about players with attitude, having led the Fab Five to consecutive national championship games at Michigan. "You can have that look and feel, but you have to compete and play to earn your spurs, and they've done that."

Comer, who didn't have as many lob passes for dunks as he did against the Hoyas, finished with 10 points and 14 assists, some of which resulted in dunks that had the crowd cheering and wanting more.

"We want to get out and run," Comer said. "We're just having so much fun."

FGCU even unleashed another offensive weapon. Christophe Varidel, a native of Switzerland, hit two big 3s early for the Eagles and finished with 11 points after going scoreless against Georgetown.

"If we can get him open shots, he's as good a shooter as I've seen," Enfield said. "He stepped up tonight and helped us and we needed that because Sherwood Brown was in early foul trouble."

Jamal Franklin had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the seventh-seeded Aztecs (23-11), who were trying to reach the regional semifinals for the second time in three years.

Franklin spoke with Brown after the game.

"I just told him just keep being the leader that he is, make sure the ball is in his hands, make sure he does what he has to do to keep his team rolling," Franklin said.

Xavier Thames' layup brought the Aztecs within 54-52 with 11:33 to play but the Eagles were off on their spurt about 90 seconds later. FGCU held San Diego State without a field goal for more than 7 minutes as it again pulled away again from a team with much bigger national profile.

"We just tried to keep a steady pace and tried to wear them down. We think we can play with anybody in the country," center Chase Fieler said. "When we got the running game going it felt like a home game."

The Eagles shot 55.9 percent for the game (33 of 59), including going 7 of 18 from 3-point range.

The Aztecs finished at 44.3 percent (27 of 61) and were 8 of 23 from beyond the arc.

"They ran. They ran hard, they ran consistent, and they ran effectively," Fisher said. "They're playing with a kind of momentum that they have earned."

FGCU had one of its highlight plays in the first half when Comer flipped the ball up toward the rim and a flying Eric McKnight grabbed it for a one-hand jam with 8:50 to play that woke up the crowd.

Suddenly it sounded a lot like Friday night, when the Eagles had several jams on lob passes that were a big part of the Georgetown upset.

McKnight was asked if that was his best dunk.

"I don't rate them," he said, "but it was one of my best ones."

How To Find Safe Online Business Opportunities | Content for Reprint

Author: Vladimir Mesic | Total views: 82 Comments: 0
Word Count: 989 Date:

There are so many scams on the internet so I understand if you are looking for safe online business opportunities which you can be sure are leading you in the right direction and at least to some sort of success without the lies, fake promises and unrealistic expectations.

Chances are, you have already spent money on some of the make money online products and courses or got involved with one of the thousands of online business opportunities promoted online. The hype sales pages promise you instant money from commissions coming into your bank account while you spend the time doing things you like, lying on the beach drinking a cocktail of your choice, an internet business in a box, push button, just copy and paste, type way to make money with hardly any work involved.

Unfortunately it's getting worse and the number of these types of products is growing daily. There are millions of people who are trying to make extra money online and are falling for these scams. Some will argue that these programs and products are not scams but if you use the criteria of what value is offered to the buyer and what is actually promised in the sales letter or sales video, then most of these online business opportunities are scams.

So what can you do to avoid paying or joining an online business opportunity that will just cost you money or more importantly your time and the risk that you will invest your resources, using outdated techniques and practices which could actually be harmful to your credibility or your success? Here are some important things to consider when searching for safe online business opportunities.

Only consider spending your money with someone who stands openly in front of the offer with their name, real proof of why you should trust him or her. Make sure that when you find out their name to search them in Google and at least look up if they are actually a real person. They should have their personal website, be on places like Linkedin, published something of value and have a positive footprint.

If there is a gorgeous young woman, a hired actress pitching an easy way to riches with a one shoe fits all approach that anyone can do with no experience or website needed, no technical skills needed, no writing needed, then just walk away and don't even bother to look into it. Just remember or write down the website address so you can avoid it in the future but best is to ignore it.

If there are amazing promises of unbelievable earnings and screenshots of those earnings of a zillion dollars and x amount of cents with a lot of mansions, million dollar yachts and offcourse the absolute must of all scam sales pages, a latest model red Ferrari, to mention a few, then just use your mouse productively and get out. This brings me to the next point.

If you've started watching the sales video or sales page and you are not sure about whether to trust this guy, if you click to close the page and get another page asking you to stay on the page for a Special Offer with a discount offered, you try to close it again and there is another discount and another, that is a sure sign that the value of that product is just as low as the discounts on offer. Again not worth wasting your time with that either.

I would recommend that you work on getting real skills and proficiencies first. It is important to first gain the basic knowledge of how things work on the internet. The subject is huge to talk about in this article but understanding the process of owning and hosting your website, content creation, search engine optimization, writing sales copy, traffic generation and many other links in the chain is a start.

However, this general knowledge is just the beginning. You must acquire skills which will enable you to do research and choose your field, register your domain, host your site, know how to optimize your site, add content to it, learn how to drive free and paid traffic , how to monetize your content and so on.

You need to be good at basics before you can go on and achieve great success and. Learn to walk before you can start thinking of participating in the World Athletics Championship.

The problem is people don't want to put in the hard work and gain the necessary skills which are a must to succeed at anything, rather they keep searching for an easy push button solutions and go from one opportunity to another.

The real diamond of information you can take with you from my article here, in my opinion, is that you need to concentrate on getting real online skills. You need to be able to do things like log into your website, change anything you want to it, add more content or change your links and banner ads for example without relying on someone to do that for you. You need to know the technical part of building a list and writing copy.

Believe me, all that requires a lot of work, meaning time which we all in this age have in limited quantities. Here is a thought I'll leave you with regarding safe online business opportunities. There is no such thing as, completely "safe", which is especially true when talking about business in general.

After saying all that, if you have at least some of the skills mentioned here, it will be easy for you to choose safe online business opportunities and work on building a business and not waste your precious time chasing one business opportunity after another.
