Bill Gates triggered a media uproar with a 'disrespectful' one-handed shake upon meeting the new South Korean president. What should Bill Gates have done?

The Microsoft chairman (who is also co-chair of one of the world's biggest charitable organizations)? is no stranger to international travel or meeting heads of state. But, on Monday, when he shook hands with South Korea's first female president, Park Geun-hye, Gates made a serious faux pas, which resulted in a cultural kerfuffle.
Gates shook her hand with just one hand. In South Korea, and much of Asia, that's only done in casual settings, with good friends. To top it off, Gates had his left hand in his pocket, signaling his superiority.
"How rude!" was the response in South Korea media. Almost every news organizations carried the photo on the front page.
The proper way to show respect would have been for Gates to clasp the South Korean leader's hand with both of his hands.
Was Gates sending a blunt signal of political disapproval to the new government leader? Was Gates ignorant of Asian etiquette??
There was enough media buzz that the South Korean president's office felt it needed to issue an official statement on the matter: "Bill Gates took a similar pose for a picture when he met former President Lee Myung-bak five years ago. Just think of it as an American style of greeting," according to Dong.com, the website of Dong-a Ilbo, a leading newspaper in Korea with daily circulation of more than 1.2 million.?
[Editor's note: Since publication, the president's office contacted The Christian Science Monitor to say that it had issued no official statement about the Bill Gates handshake.]
The first part of that statement is true. In fact, the Atlantic Wire compiled a series of Bill Gates One-Hand Shaking, One-Hand-in-Pocket photos from previous meetings with other world dignitaries, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, China's President Xi Jinping, and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Apparently Gates is consistently casual about his handshakes ? with whomever he meets.
While the one-handed Western handshake has become more common in Asia, business etiquette also suggests that one never looks directly in the eyes of the person you're meeting. An exception to that rule is the Philippines. And in many places, a bow is also part of the greeting.
In Cambodia, for example, if you meet a prominent businessman, the proper way to show respect is to place your palms together at chest height and bow at your waist.
There's also a culturally correct way to exchange business cards in Asia, too. Each card should be in English on one side, and the recipient's native language on the other. You present your card with both hands, native language side up and readable to the recipient. When you receive a card, it's also a two-handed affair. Look at it, thank the person, and put in gently in a coat pocket.

The Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 92z ($1,093.99) is a very good midrange all-in-one desktop, built for business. It has the chops to quickly take care of many of the tasks you'll need to do in a small to medium business, and it has a measure of upgradability, something sorely lacking in sealed all-in-one desktops. It's a very good choice for the SMB user and those just starting to use Windows 8 in a business setting.
Design and Features
The ThinkCentre Edge 92z's design follows the design ID set by its predecessor, the Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 91z ($1386) a couple of years ago. This is good if you already have ThinkCentre Edge 91z systems at your office, as the new systems won't necessarily bring envious stares right away. The system comes with a seamless glass panel over the 21.5-inch touch screen, the better to use Windows 8's touch gestures like bringing up the Charms bar and similar functions. The touch screen supports 10-finger touch functionality, which is optimal for one or two simultaneous users. The ThinkCentre Edge siblings use the two feet and easel-style of support, which allows for a 10- to 40-degree tilt. The two feet straddle an opening for the wired keyboard below the screen. The configuration we looked at also came with a standard wired USB mouse. Though it lacks a wireless mouse and keyboard, this is more usable in a business setting than the overly designed HP Spectre One 23-e010se ($1,609) or Asus Transformer AIO (P1801-B037K) ($1,299), both of which have platforms to hold their keyboards.
The ThinkCentre Edge 92z uses an internal power supply with a standard three-prong power cord. This is a boon for your company IT guy, as he doesn't have to keep spare power bricks handy if or when your users run the cords over with their rolling chairs. Other company-friendly features include a removable support arm and feet, so you can mount the Edge 92z on an articulated arm or on a wall.
The system has a good number of I/O ports, including two side-mounted USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports in the back, Ethernet, and rare for a business system, HDMI-in and HDMI-out. HDMI-out is useful for connecting an external monitor for multi-monitor use, and the HDMI-in port is likewise useful to extend the life of the system. You can use the system's 21.5-inch 1080p monitor as the external display for a future laptop or desktop after the PC components in the Edge 92z become obsolete.
Armed with a little IT experience you should be able to open the Edge 92z's chassis with a screwdriver to swap out or upgrade the hard drive, optical drive, system memory, or even the system's CPU. Future internal upgrades may be important to your company, depending on your accounting rules. It may be easier to budget for an internal upgrade rather than a complete system replacement, which is one of the main issues with the non-upgradable chassis in the midrange all-in-one Editors' Choice Apple iMac 21.5-Inch (Late 2012) ($1,199).
The ThinkCentre Edge 92z comes with a large selection of pre-installed apps, including Skype, Lenovo Companion, Evernote, Norton Internet Security, Accuweather, Lenovo Support, Lenovo Quicksnip, PowerDVD, Lenovo cloud storage (by Sugarsync), and Intel AppUp (another online app store). Quicksnip is interesting, as it lets you quickly snip photos for new compositions. Think of Quicksnip as a quick way to combine photo elements into existing photos, like when you need to put a picture of your company founder into a group staff picture. The sheer amout of apps is a little daunting, especially for the formal or informal IT guy in your office. The Edge 92z comes with a one-year warranty.
Performance
The ThinkCentre Edge 92z we looked at came with an Intel Core i5-3470 processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 7,200rpm 500GB hard drive, and AMD Radeon HD 7650A discrete graphics. The combination of components makes the Edge 92z competitive with other mid-priced consumer and business oriented all-in-one desktops. Its scores on PCMark 7 (day-to-day operations), Handbrake (video encoding), and Photoshop CS6 were right in the sweet spot for Core i5-powered midrange systems. It's competitive with the Apple iMac, Asus Transformer AIO, as well as other like minded (and priced) systems like the Dell Inspiron One 23 ($1,199) and Samsung Series 7 (DP700A3D-A01US) ($1099.99), though the Samsung falls behind the others a bit. The Edge 92z comes with discrete AMD Radeon graphics, but as the 7650A is a mainstream GPU, it falls behind the 3D performance on more powerful systems like the Asus and Apple. If you need 3D for light CAD/CAM or GPU-assisted computing, the latter systems are a better choice.
Essentially, the Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 92z hits the midrange all-in-one sweet spot, with a combination of touch computing, good styling, and decent performance. It makes more sense than the Asus Transformer AIO for the business user, even though the Asus gives you a tablet and a desktop in the same package. However, the ThinkCentre Edge 92z isn't quite enough to overcome the iMac's hold on the midrange all-in-one Editors' Choice, which has more memory, a more powerful GPU, and twice the hard drive space.

MIAMI (Reuters) - The Department of Labor has ordered Florida to improve access to jobless benefits for people with disabilities or limited English proficiency in a ruling that could help make the state's unemployment insurance program more accessible to everyone, employment rights and legal advocacy groups said on Thursday.
"This is a huge victory," Valory Greenfield, an attorney for the non-profit Florida Legal Services, said of the Labor Department ruling.
"It's our expectation that this decision will have implications for the way Florida continues to implement its program with respect to all kinds of groups of people," Greenfield said.
Under revised procedures introduced in 2011, Florida requires everyone who applies for unemployment benefits to do so online and to complete a 45-question online exam that tests reading, math and research skills before they can receive a check.
The Labor Department's Civil Rights Center has been investigating the changes, based on a complaint filed by the National Employment Law Project and Florida Legal Services. In an initial determination, made public on Thursday, the department found that some of the more onerous online procedures may have opened the door to civil rights violations involving people with language and disability barriers.
"The way it's been operating does in fact violate certain federal discrimination laws," said George Wentworth, a senior staff attorney with the National Employment Law Project.
Florida's Department of Economic Opportunity, which administers the state's jobless benefits program, denied any legal violations. It said in a brief statement that the changes introduced in 2011 "conformed to federal law and regulations." Florida was working, however, to improve jobless aid, it said.
A Labor Department spokesperson said the federal government and Florida were now working together "to ensure that all persons who have limited English language proficiency or have disabilities, and who are eligible for unemployment compensation, have fair and meaningful access to those benefits."
Under a timeline laid out in its preliminary ruling, Florida was given 60 days beginning on April 5 to reach voluntary compliance with the ruling or face civil action by the U.S. Attorney General's Office and the potential loss of federal funding.
The ruling also provided a list of proposed remedies to fix some of the problems in Florida, which has a large population of people for whom English is not their primary language.
A separate, broader complaint filed with the Labor Department over the revisions to Florida's unemployment benefits program is still pending. Greenfield said the preliminary ruling was sure to set some precedent and influence other states considering online-only systems like Florida's.
"We think this signals a blueprint," she said. "It's telling these states, including Florida, that if you're going to do this you have to do it in a thoughtful way and protect people's rights."
She did not elaborate, but Florida ranks among the most tight-fisted states in the country when it comes to providing jobless benefits for the unemployed.
The average unemployment benefit paid to recipients in Florida was just $231 a week last year. Only Alabama and Mississippi paid out less in average weekly jobless aid.
Florida also ranks among the lowest in the nation when it comes to the number of eligible people receiving jobless benefits. In Florida these benefits are available for only 19 weeks compared with 26 weeks in most other states.
DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syria hopes to clinch more financial aid from its allies Russia and Iran soon, but still has enough foreign reserves to pursue its war on rebels trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad, the central bank governor said.
Speaking at the bank's headquarters, hit by a car bomb on April 8, Adeeb Mayaleh said: "We are expecting much more support from friendly countries... Yes, financial support from Iran and Russia and it could also be from other friendly countries.
"Discussions are going on. We are in the process of putting the final touches on the subject of financial aid in a clear way," he told Reuters in an interview, without specifying how much money Iran and Russia would provide.
He said Tehran had already given Syria a $1 billion credit line, more than half of which had been used, and that Russia was now printing Syrian banknotes, formerly supplied by Germany and Austria until the European Union imposed sanctions on Syria.
The central bank chief, whose office features a large Syrian flag and gold-framed portraits of Bashar al-Assad and his father Hafez, said Syria's foreign reserves were more than sufficient to guarantee essential imports and pay state salaries.
Syria had reserves of $17 billion when the uprising against Assad began just over two years ago. It now had "much more" left than the "incorrect" $4 billion figure which some bankers have quoted, Mayaleh said. He would not give a specific figure.
"If we compare the prices of commodities in Syria to those in neighboring countries, you find they are cheaper in Syria despite the fact that other countries do not have war being waged on them by countries from around the world," he said.
"This means that reserves are still enough for Syria to stand fast against this conspiracy."
Mayaleh said the war had caused economic losses of "over 25 billion euros" as well as halting growth, which he said had been running at 6-7 percent a year before the fighting began.
"STOLEN MONEY"
Mayaleh criticized the EU for deciding last week to modify sanctions on Syria to allow oil purchases from rebel forces in control of some eastern oil-producing areas.
"I don't understand how the European Union can give these terrorist armed groups the right to export oil from Syria to Europe," he said. "Under what law?...This is money laundering, this is stolen money and these are stolen goods."
"They (Europeans) are nurturing these militant extremists," he said. "When they finish their role in Syria ... they will go to Europe...The Europeans are trying to bring up a monster who will turn against Europe and its citizens."
The Syrian conflict has devastated the economy. Electricity is sporadic and Damascus residents have to queue for long hours for bread or petrol, which often run out. Prices of many basic foods and goods rose between 50 and 80 percent last year.
Mayaleh spoke of how the authorities were coping with the economic challenges posed by a war now entering its third year.
"(The opposition) spread rumors that salaries would not be paid for employees and that the state has gone bankrupt," he said. "Two years have passed in this crisis ... and the salaries have always been paid...a month in advance."
Syria had tackled rumors of forged banknotes in circulation by telling citizens they could exchange any suspect currency at face value in banks for Russian-printed official notes, he said.
Nevertheless, the Syrian pound has slumped to 115 to the dollar in exchange houses from 46 before the uprising.
Mayaleh acknowledged that the pound was weak and that inflation was running at 50 percent a year, but said many other countries in the region, including Lebanon, Iraq and Kuwait, had suffered worse devaluations in times of conflict.
He did not answer a question on whether the government had a specific target for the Syrian pound's value.
Like other government officials here, Mayaleh questioned why the West was "fostering and protecting" Syrian rebels.
"Aren't the Europeans afraid of these groups turning on their countries and turning them into a hell, as happened in America?" he said of al Qaeda's September 11, 2001 attacks.
Downstairs in the central bank building, scaffolding covered walls of an internal courtyard where windows had been blown out by the car bomb. Blinds on the front windows hung twisted. Outside, the blast had shriveled a palm tree to a black husk.
A crane lifted concrete blocks spray-painted with the Syrian flag into position to protect the building from future bombings.
(Reuters) - This year's U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania has attracted a record total of 9,860 entries, the United States Golf Association (USGA) said on Thursday. The number of applicants for the June 13-16 tournament eclipsed the previous best of 9,086 for the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. "The fact that we have a record number of entries, from across the world, is a testament to both the great appeal of the U.S. Open and the historic nature and grandeur of Merion Golf Club," USGA Executive Director Mike Davis said in a statement. LONDON (AP) ? Legislation that will end a centuries-old British rule that puts boys before girls in the succession to the throne has cleared the House of Lords, and now goes to Queen Elizabeth II for approval.
The change means that if Prince William and the former Kate Middleton have a girl first, she will become queen, and no younger brother will be able to jump the line and displace her.
The legislation also permits an heir to the throne to marry a Catholic, though Catholics would still be barred from succeeding to the throne.
The bill, which has been fast-tracked through Parliament, passed a third and final reading in the House of Lords Monday.
The government wants to change current laws, which date back to the 1701 Act of Settlement, before the royal couple's first child is born in July. The baby will be third in line to the throne after William and his father Prince Charles.
Kate, formally known as the Duchess of Cambridge, has kept up a fairly busy schedule of royal engagements since becoming pregnant.
On Tuesday, she visited a school in Manchester to launch a counseling project and meet workers from a youth mental health services charity.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Strong earnings across a range of U.S. industries pushed the stock market higher Tuesday.
Makers of handbags, jet planes and chemical products all turned in good results for the first quarter, reviving investors' confidence after a sharp downturn in the stock market last week.
Coach, Lockheed Martin, DuPont and Travelers were among the winners after they reported results that were better than analysts expected. The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index both rose nearly 1 percent in morning trading, putting them on track for a third straight day of gains.
A resurgence in corporate profits after the Great Recession has been one of the drivers that pushed both the Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index to record levels this year. However investors are starting to question how much further company earnings can improve without the outlook for growth in the global economy improving as well.
Tuesday's upturn in stocks put both indexes back in the black for April and closer to the record high closes they reached on April 11. It was a sharp change of tone from last week, when the market had its worst drop since November. That sell-off started after economic growth in China, the world's second-largest economy, slowed.
So far, about 70 percent of the companies that reported earnings for the first quarter have beaten analysts' expectations, better than the 10-year average of 62 percent, according to data from S&P Capital IQ. Analysts currently expect earnings to rise by 2.1 percent in the first quarter, compared with 7.7 percent growth in the previous three-month period.
Netflix soared 25 percent to $219 after reporting a big gain in subscribers in the first quarter late yesterday. Coach, which makes Luxury handbags and other accessories, soared 11 percent to $56.44. Lockheed rose 2 percent to $97.25. DuPont and Travelers each rose 3 percent, to $51.88 and $86.88.
The Dow was up 146 points at 14,714 as of 12:25 p.m. The S&P 500 was 17 points higher at 1,579. Both indexes are 1 percent below their record high closes from nearly two weeks ago.
The Nasdaq composite rose 41 points to 3,274.
Apple, the biggest component in the index, reports earnings after the market closes. Apple has lost 23 percent of its value this year. Investor worry that demand for the iPhone is waning as competitors like Samsung sell more smartphones. The company's stock rose $7.82 to $407.
Today?s Business Success is from a new contributor, Kevin McNally, CEO and founder of Interactive Palette, and focuses on a topic we can?t learn enough about: marketing online.
Build a Better Business through Online Presence ?
Effective marketing is at the heart of a successful business with a prevailing online presence perhaps the most straightforward route to achieving commercial goals.
In fact, a company?s website is the first thing many potential clients check out before deciding where to take their business, so it pays to maintain one that provides consistent up-to-date information, is easy to navigate and in general positively reflects what your company has to offer.
A powerful website should focus on your specific industry and help to build your brand. Those in the photography trade already know that a picture is indeed worth a thousand words; as such current content is critical to a business website.? Here is where a Content Management System (CMS) can keep your website fresh and inviting.? All too often, businesses rarely alter their website, in large part due to the misconception that it will be a costly endeavor.? While it?s true that a complete overhaul of a website comes with a considerable price tag, adding a CMS is quite cost-effective and typically pays for itself in short time.
For the uninitiated, a CMS is a web-based interface that allows business owners and specified staff the ability to add pages, edit content, upload images and PDFs and make other changes to a website as needed.? This allows a business to maintain the most up-to-date information on projects, services and price information. It enables the capacity to post press releases, special offers, testimonials and useful links.? And perhaps most importantly for the photography industry, a CMS allows inclusion of a dynamic photo gallery of completed projects.
A website becomes much more search engine friendly with the use of a CMS, allowing for increased traffic and potentially increased business. Building wide awareness of a website is essential to the success of a business and with a few fundamental SEO (Search Engine Optimization) measures you can increase ?hits.?
In much the same way that real estate is defined by ?location, location, location,? in the world of websites a top ranking on search engines ?such as Google or Yahoo ? is king.
One of the best methods to increase search engine ranking is through the optimal use of keywords; that is, knowing what specific words or phrases people are searching for and then targeting those phrases on your site.? A website designer can conduct the appropriate research to determine and target those keywords and also provide further analysis to pinpoint the most important terms ? or terms ?with opportunity? ? that might help bring the right visitors to your site.
Website linking is another technique used by professional website designers to attract traffic to a site.? In brief, this mechanism interlinks words or phrases key to a business website to other relevant pages on the site.? In addition, consider linking images from your website to other important pages in the same way; this can attract traffic through ?image search? results.
While ?less is more? in terms of a company?s home page or contact page, a website?s news section is where content rules.? Instead of short paragraphs or brief press releases, it?s wise to include blogs or articles of about 500 words.? This approach not only allows for comprehensive information about your services or other newsworthy information, it also adds to that all important keyword total.? In fact, search engines are always on the look-out for expanded website content, so use it to your best advantage.
So, how can you gauge whether your website is doing your business justice? Google Analytics is a service offered by Google that generates detailed statistics about a website?s traffic and traffic sources.? It allows you to measure sales and conversions and also provides insights into how visitors arrived at your site, how they use it and how you can keep them staying on it longer and returning more often.
Also, sure your company is included in Google Local listings ? think of it a modern day Yellow Pages.
The ?must have? list for better business is a website that loads quickly; that?s the best way to optimize traffic.? Keep in mind that if your website?s home page overdoes content, you may be in jeopardy of scaring off potential clients, so word to the wise ? pare content on the home page down to the essentials to allow visitors continued navigation on the website.
Speaking of navigation, make sure that information is never more than a click or two away; providing a variety of navigational routes will go a long way toward ensuring customer satisfaction.? Think image maps, hyperlinks and drop-down menus in addition to search engines?all say ?user friendly.?
Maintaining a few social networking profiles (such as LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook) can be a great way to promote your company to new clients, while at the same time keeping past and current clients in the know about what?s going on.
While a static website that provides comprehensive and consistently updated information is of great value, site owners can leverage their knowledge, add another dimension to their site and directly target audiences through podcasts.
In short a podcast is a digital media file, downloaded directly from a streaming Internet source.? Podcasts are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds and are hosted by individuals, businesses or organizations that want to share information. Podcast files are streamed and/or downloaded onto a computer, mobile device, MP3 player or iPod, etc.
Think of podcasting as having the ability to broadcast a personalized radio and/or video show directly from your website, thereby lending a ?voice? to your business. Podcasting is a way to showcase your expertise and can enhance your reputation as an authority in your field.? It is also a means of communicating in a much more personal manner than via a blanket email, e-newsletter or attached written document. Another plus to podcasting is its minimal cost; all that is needed is a microphone and Internet connection with RSS, a format for delivering regularly changing web content.
Essentially, podcasts are recorded and then distributed over the Internet, allowing you to reach new and wider audiences through your website.? Once listeners subscribe to a podcast feed, new podcasts are automatically downloaded to their computer or mobile device as soon as they are available, enabling your audience to listen at their convenience.? Since podcasting is an on-demand subscription technology, you can monitor your subscribers and have confidence that they are receiving the information you?re providing.
As a bonus, guests can be invited to participate in your podcast, providing an interactive and engaging element.
Podcasting not only showcases your expertise, it also shines a media light on your personality, giving your audience a sense of who you are and what your business can provide.? Moreover, podcasting allows subscribers access to information at their convenience.? They can listen when they want, starting and stopping content at will.
Having and maintaining an up-to-date website is essential to conducting business these days, but optimizing its potential should also be a priority. Through the use of proven mechanisms, traffic can be drawn to the right destination? your website.
The FIA's upcoming Formula E series has revealed two US dates on its début 2014 calendar (Los Angeles, Miami) and yesterday it took to LA's streets to promote the partnership. For Earth Day, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa welcomed Formula E Holdings CEO Alejandro Agag downtown along with a Formula E racecar for the exhibition. The race will run on downtown streets next year, although the exact route the 140mph-capable EVs will take has yet to be locked down. Unfortunately there's no video of the event so while you can't not-hear its electric engine humming along as it burned rubber in the streets, the pictures in this gallery and video from its Moscow and Rome exhibitions will have to do.
Lyle Denniston looks at the issues of Miranda warnings, Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Tsarnaev?s protections under the Constitution?s Fifth Amendment, and the public safety exception.
The statement at issue:
?The police can interrogate a suspect without offering him the benefit of Miranda [warnings] if he could have information that?s of urgent concern for public safety.? That may or may not be the case with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.? The problem is that Attorney General Eric Holder has stretched the law beyond that scenario.?
?? Emily Bazelon, a columnist for Slate.com, in an article on April 19, ?Why Should I Care That No One?s Reading Dzhokhar Tsarnaev His Miranda Rights???
?[As of Saturday night] Authorities have not read him his Miranda rights, which include the right to remain silent and the right to an attorney. Federal law enforcement officials said they plan to use a public safety exception, outlined in a 1984 Supreme Court decision, ?in order to question the suspect extensively about other potential explosive devices or accomplices and to gain critical intelligence.??
?? Washington Post story on April 21, by reporters Joel Achenbach and Robert Barnes, ?Authorities seek answers in Boston Marathon bombing.
We checked the Constitution, and?
Some three decades ago, the Supreme Court for the first time gave police and federal agents the authority to avoid giving criminal suspects Miranda warnings about their constitutional rights, when the public safety justified that suspension.? That authority, given in the 1984 decision of New York v. Quarles, has since been expanded by lower courts so that, even if a suspect has claimed the right to remain silent or the right to a lawyer, the questioning can go on if the public safety threat remains.
How long such questioning can continue, and what kinds of questions can be asked, is now the source of considerable uncertainty, as officials have developed interrogation policies they think are necessary in dealing with terrorist incidents.? But one thing does remain certain: the Constitution still requires that the police not use outright coercion in order to get answers even to the most pressing questions.?? If authorities want to use the evidence that they gain by such questioning, that evidence must have been given voluntarily.
In the case of the 19-year-old suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon and other crimes after that, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, there is no doubt that he has some protection under the Constitution?s Fifth Amendment against being forced to implicate himself.? He is a U.S. citizen, so he has the legal shield of the Constitution.? (On April 2, we discussed the rights during terrorism investigations of suspects who are not U.S. citizens; those rights may differ.)
The night that Tsarnaev was captured in Watertown, Mass., the chief U.S. prosecutor, Carmen Ortiz, told the news media that the suspect would not be given Miranda warnings immediately when questioning began, and she cited the ?public safety exception.?
About Constitution Check
In a continuing series of posts, Lyle Denniston provides responses based on the Constitution and its history to public statements about its meaning and what duties it imposes or rights it protects.
Last year, in a bulletin to law enforcement officers across the nation, the FBI cautioned them that this exception applied only to questions ?directed at neutralizing an imminent threat.?? It added that ?once the questions turn from those designed to resolve the concern for safety to questions designed solely to elicit incriminating statements, the questioning falls outside the scope of the exception and within the traditional rules of Miranda.?
Related story: Constitution Check: Why would a terrorism suspect be given Miranda warnings?
However, under the terms of a 2010 Justice Department legal memo (criticized by Slate.com?s Emily Bazelon in the column quoted above), questioning of a terrorism suspect who has not been told of his rights may also continue even beyond concerns for the moment, in order potentially to get significant intelligence information ?not related to any immediate threat.?? The memo cautions that the officers conducting the interrogation should get approval from their superiors to go further into intelligence-gathering.
None of these issues that are specifically related to terrorism investigations have yet reached the Supreme Court, so federal agents and police use this added authority without knowing what the legal risks are.
There is some risk that, if the public safety exception and the 2010 Justice Department memo are pressed too far by officers in the field, they could put in jeopardy their chances of using at later trials the evidence of crime that has been gathered.? The calculation thus has to be made whether to run that risk.? That involves a balancing of the needs of trial prosecutors with the needs of finding out about potential future threats.
What investigators are generally expected to understand is that the whole purpose of the Miranda warnings is to make sure that any incriminating evidence that results from questioning is available for use at trial, and the warnings are designed to help assure that whatever the suspect has said that gets him into trouble was said voluntarily.
If the threat of terrorism rises to the level that intelligence is more important than criminal evidence, then official policy, as outlined in the 2010 Justice Department memo, for example, will give it a higher priority.
That, however, is a judgment call that has to be made one case at a time, as in the case of the Boston bombing suspect.? From all that officials involved in the investigation in Boston have said, it may well be that they have such overwhelming evidence to support prosecution that they have little need to get Tsarnaev to confess and can focus, instead, on finding out what he may know ? if anything ? about other threats or accomplices.

A cautiously worded study based on data collected in Sweden has found that ?in utero exposure to both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (S.S.R.I.?s) and nonselective monoamine reuptake inhibitors (tricyclic antidepressants) was associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders, particularly without intellectual disability.?
The Swedish medical birth register (which contains data on current drug use reported by mothers early in their pregnancies), along with a system of publicly funded screenings for autism spectrum disorders and extensive national and regional registers of various health issues, make a detailed, population-based case-control study possible ? one that controls for other variables like family income, parent educational level, maternal and paternal age and even maternal region of birth (all factors the authors note have been previously associated with autism).
This is the second study in two years to associate antidepressant use during pregnancy with an increased incidence of autism in exposed children. An earlier, smaller study in California also found a modest increase in risk. The Sweden-based study could not (and did not) exclude the possibility that it was the severe depression, rather than the use of antidepressants, that created the association, but the smaller California study (which considered only S.S.R.I.?s) found ?no increase in risk? for mothers with a history of mental health treatment in the absence of prenatal exposure to S.S.R.I.?s.
The authors of the current study took a very cautious approach to their findings:
The results of the present study as well as the U.S. study present a major dilemma in relation to clinical advice to pregnant women with depression. If antidepressants increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder, it would be reasonable to warn women about this possibility. However, if the association actually reflects the risk of autism spectrum disorder related to the nongenetic effects of severe depression during pregnancy, treatment may reduce the risk. Informed decisions would also need to consider weighing the wider risks of untreated depression with the other adverse outcomes related to antidepressant use. With the current evidence, if the potential risk of autism were a consideration in the decision-making process, it may be reasonable to think about, wherever appropriate, nondrug approaches such as psychological treatments. However, their timely availability to pregnant women will need to be enhanced.
Others working in the field are more inclined to draw a line between the prenatal drug exposure and the increased risk of autism. ?It really shouldn?t come as that much of a surprise given that numerous animal studies have shown that exposure during development leads to changes in the brain and changes in behavior ? often that mimic autism,? said Dr. Adam C. Urato, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Tufts University School of Medicine and chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, Mass. (Dr. Urato obviously didn?t speak in links, but you can find the animal studies he refers to here and here.)
?And why should it surprise us that medications that can change brain chemistry and function might alter the development of the brain and behavior?? Dr. Urato argues that the risks of antidepressant use during pregnancy outweigh what he sees as the limited benefits.
One conclusion that is simple to draw is that it?s extraordinarily difficult for a pregnant woman with clinical depression to find some definitive answer about what?s best for her in her situation. I?ve spoken to other researchers in the past who have described for me how difficult it is to put together a study that separates the risks of depression itself in pregnancy from the risks, if any, of the drugs used to treat it. As the researchers in Sweden note, it?s unlikely that conclusive evidence on this issue will ever be available.
If you?ve been pregnant with clinical depression, where did you go to find the information and advice you needed?
I hear a lot of people talking about how nice it is to go on vacation and "just unplug for awhile." They say that taking a break from their devices helps them refocus. Which makes sense! Except I already know what a great time they had on their vacations because they posted a steady stream of photos throughout, or texted me after they went to surfing lessons/wine tasting. The last time I was totally unplugged was during a camping trip last summer and it was only for a couple of days. When was the last time you really went off grid? Revisit simpler times below. More »
Another popular article from the past, by Ken Collura
Have you ever tried Coca-Cola with a steak? Or coffee? How about a margarita?
Each of these beverages can be seen accompanying steaks around town on a nightly basis. I know that everyone has different taste buds, but the thought of something sweet and effervescent mingling with a medium-rare New York Strip? Yikes!
When it comes to pairing wines with food, there are many so-called ?classic matches? that work beautifully. But there are an equal amount of others that to my palate don?t work well at all. Being someone who rarely drinks wine unless accompanied by food, I frequently experiment, looking for flavors and textures that blend well. The texture of a wine (crisp and acidic or rich and full-bodied) says a lot about which dishes it will pair well with.
Below are some pairings that always work well, and some that just don?t. I?ve also included some different ideas that have been successful for me in the past. Classic Wine/Food Pairings that Work
Crisp white wine with raw shellfish.
Icy cold Kumamoto or Barren Point oysters, freshly shucked and seasoned with a touch of hot sauce and horseradish, are elevated to knockout status when put together with one of the following: 1) Muscadet from the western Loire Valley in France; 2) New Zealand sauvignon blanc; 3) Albarino from the northwest of Spain or 4) An unoaked Premier Cru Chablis (my favorite).
Red Bordeaux with Lamb. A dream match. Both Bordeaux and lamb work well with other partners, but never as well as when they are side-by-side. I particularly like Right Bank wines (St.-Emilion or Pomerol) with my medium-rare rack of lamb, sprinkled with rosemary (hold the mint sauce). Reasonable substitutes for Bordeaux might be a Ribera del Duero from Spain, or a malbec from Argentina.
Barbera d?Alba with Tomato and/or Meat-Based Pasta Dishes. When tasted by itself, barbera from Piedmonte in Northern Italy, will never win any awards. Sharp fruit, high acids, biting finish. Take this same wine and hook it up with Penne Bolognese (other choices might be Linguine or Fettuccine in an Arrabiata or Marinara sauce), and it turns into the Wine of the Gods.
Classic Wine/Food Pairings That Don?t Work So Well
Big, Rich Red Wine with Cheese.
As the years go by, I?ve come to think that red wine and cheese are not necessarily the best of friends. Sometimes full-bodied reds, such as cabernet sauvignon or syrah, can overpower a cheese, unless the cheese has hair growing on it. Next time, you might try a white with your cheese course. Loire Valley whites mesh well. Try Sancerre or Pouilly-Fume with goat cheese, which is actually a classic pairing in France, but rarely seen here at home. Another, albeit less known, pairing is demi-sec chenin blanc like a Vouvray or Coteaux du Layon with salty blue cheese, such as Roquefort or Fourmes d?Ambert. Sublime counterpoint.
Champagne and Caviar. Dry, yeasty Champagnes, like Bollinger or Pol Roger, always seem to fight against the salt. I always recommend Rose Champagne with caviar. The strawberry/watermelon tang in a really good rose (like Billecart-Salmon or the l?Hermitage from Roederer in California) brings out the best in both sides of the equation.
Foie Gras and Sauternes. Sorry, I still don?t get this one. Sauternes is just too rich and sweet a wine to put with any savory food. Once you taste fois gras with a great gew?rztraminer such as Cuvee Theo from Weinbach or the Londer gewurz from Anderson Valley in California, you?ve hit the fois gras pinnacle.
White Wine with Fish. White wine is OK with fish, especially lighter white fishes like flounder. But what about when tuna, salmon, grouper or halibut come into play? What works better for me is a lighter pinot noir (no 2003?s from Oregon please), or even a Cru Beaujolais, like a good Moulin-a-Vent or Chiroubles. These reds retain the sharp acids needed to break down the oils found in a fish like salmon.
New Ideas I?m a fan of red Zinfandel, so let me offer two new ideas for pairing America?s indigenous wine:
Zinfandel with Traditional German Dishes
. Pork absolutely sings with Zinfandel. Marry a juicy, full-blown zin like St. Francis Old Vines or Renwood Grandpere with bratwurst, schnitzel, sauerkraut and spatzle and you?ll hear an aria.
Zinfandel with Asian Stir-Fry.
I make a somewhat unorthodox stir-fry. I thrown in commonly-accepted ingredients such as bean sprouts, snow peas, sesame oil, soy sauce, tofu and Asian spices, but deviate by using Italian vermicelli as my noodle of choice. The key wacky addition is a spicy Indian curry paste called Patak?s Madras, which includes cumin, coriander, tamarind and ginger. No other wine I?ve ever tried blends like a zin with this fiery dish.
Apr. 21, 2013 ? Ludwig researchers Arshad Desai and Christopher Campbell, a post-doctoral fellow in his laboratory, were conducting an experiment to parse the molecular details of cell division about three years ago, when they engineered a mutant yeast cell as a control that, in theory, had no chance of surviving. Apparently unaware of this, the mutant thrived.
Intrigued, Campbell and Desai began exploring how it had defied its predicted fate. As detailed in the current issue of Nature, what they discovered has overturned the prevailing model of how dividing cells ensure that each of their daughter cells emerge with equal numbers of chromosomes, which together package the genome. "Getting the right number of chromosomes into each cell is absolutely essential to sustaining life," explains Desai, PhD, a Ludwig member at the University of California, San Diego, "but it is also something that goes terribly wrong in cancer. The kinds of mistakes that occur when this process isn't functioning properly are seen in about 90% of cancers, and very frequently in advanced and drug-resistant tumors."
Campbell and Desai's study focused in particular on four interacting proteins known as the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC) that monitor the appropriate parceling out of chromosomes. When cells initiate division, each chromosome is made of two connected, identical sister chromatids -- roughly resembling a pair of baguettes joined in the middle. As the process of cell division advances, long protein ropes known as microtubules that extend from opposite ends of the cell hook up to the chromosomes to yank each of the sister chromatids in opposite directions. The microtubules attach to the chromatids via an intricate disc-like structure called the kinetochore. When the protein ropes attach correctly to the sister chromatids, pulling at each from opposing sides, they generate tension on the chromosome. One of the four proteins of the CPC, Aurora B kinase, is an enzyme that monitors that tension. Aurora B is expressed at high levels in many cancers and has long been a target for the development of cancer therapies.
Aurora B is essentially a molecular detector. "If the chromosomes are not under tension," says Desai, "Aurora B forces the rope to release the kinetochore and try attaching over and over again, until they achieve that correct, tense attachment."
The question is how? Aurora B is ordinarily found between the two kinetochores in a region of the chromosome that links the sister chromatids, known as the centromere. The prevailing model held that the microtubule ropes would pull themselves, and the kinetochores, away from Aurora B's reach, so that it cannot force the microtubule ropes to detach from their captive chromosomes. In other words, the location of Aurora B between the two kinetochore discs was thought to be central to its role as a monitor of the requisite tension. "This matter was thought settled," says Desai.
Yet, as Campbell and Desai show through their experiments, yeast cells engineered to carry a mutant CPC that can't be targeted to the centromere survive quite vigorously. They demonstrate that in such cells Aurora B instead congregates on the microtubule ropes. There, it somehow still ensures that the required tension is achieved on chromosomes before they are parceled out to daughter cells.
How precisely it does this remains unclear. Campbell and Desai provide evidence that the clustering of Aurora B on microtubules might be sufficient to activate its function. At the same time, they hypothesize, appropriate tension on the chromosome may induce structural changes in Aurora B's targets that make them resistant to its enzymatic activity. Campbell and Desai are now conducting experiments to test these ideas.

LONDON (AP) ? Tsegaye Kebede claimed a second London Marathon title on Sunday, cheered through the streets by thousands of spectators reassured by enhanced security at the first major race since the twin bombings at the Boston event.
A race that started with tributes to the Boston victims with a moment of silence ended with a thrilling conclusion under clear blue skies.
With a black ribbon pinned to his chest, Kebede chased down Emmanuel Mutai in the closing stages, and overtook the tiring Kenyan to cross the line first in front of Buckingham Palace.
Kebede clocked 2 hours, 6 minutes and 15 seconds to emulate his 2010 triumph in London, while compatriot Ayele Abshero was third.
The victory in the British capital came after Kebede was denied a shot at glory here at the Olympics last year after being overlooked by Ethiopian selectors.
The women's race saw Olympic silver medalist Priscah Jeptoo go one better in the annual London race.
The Kenyan cruised over the line in 2:20:15 seconds, the fastest time this year, ahead of compatriot Edna Kiplagat, while Yukiko Akaba of Japan was third.
"Today I'm very, very happy, I couldn't believe I could be the winner," Jeptoo told the BBC. "It is a very tough race because everybody who comes here is really prepared."
It was a miserable day for Olympic champion Tiki Gelana, who finished 16th after seeing her hopes thwarted by a collision about a third of the way in.
The Ethiopian collided with Canadian wheelchair racer Josh Cassidy as she went to get a drink.
"Every year we come to overtake the women, there's 10 chairs going at 20 mph and the poor women are scrambling to find their feet," said Cassidy, who finished 20th. "I have a brand new $2,000 pair of wheels that are damaged, who's going to pay for them? Things have to change."
It was the one blot on a day marked by the defiance of athletes and spectators in the bright London sunshine in a difficult week for the athletics community.
The specter of the bombings near to the Boston Marathon finish line, which killed three people and injured more than 180, loomed in London.
And it was apt that Tatyana McFadden, who won the wheelchair race in Boston just before the explosions, shrugged off security concerns in London to win her second title in a week.
London organizers pledged to donate 2 pounds ($3) for every finisher to The One Fund Boston set up to raise money for the bomb victims.
Before a minute's silence at the start of the marathon, event commentator Geoff Wightman urged athletes to "remember our friends and colleagues for whom a day of joy turned into a day of sadness."
Prince Harry mingled with the crowds and said he had never thought about canceling his visit following the bombings.
"It's fantastic, typically British," he said. "People are saying they haven't seen crowds like this for eight years around the route. It's remarkable to see."

Apr. 19, 2013 ? Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found that alternative splicing -- a process that allows a single gene to code for multiple proteins -- appears to be a new potential target for anti-telomerase cancer therapy.
The enzyme telomerase is overexpressed in almost all cancer cells, and previous research efforts have failed to identify good telomerase inhibitors. The study by Dr. Woodring Wright and UT Southwestern colleagues in the April 4 issue of Cell Reports identifies a new approach for inhibiting telomerase, which is an enzyme that drives uncontrolled division and replication of cancer cells.
Alternative splicing allows genetic information to be assembled in different ways and is almost always controlled by DNA sequences that are immediately adjacent to the parts of a gene that code for protein. "In the case of the telomerase gene, we found that these controlling regions are located very far from the protein coding regions and that they contain unusual DNA sequences," said Dr. Wright, professor of cell biology and internal medicine. "Their unusual DNA structure suggests that humans regulate telomerase in a very different fashion that we may be able to exploit to develop inhibitors of the enzyme."
Most of the splice variants that telomerase makes are inactive, but Dr. Wright's team demonstrated that it was possible to shift the splicing to make even less active telomerase, potentially providing a new approach for cancer therapy.
Telomeres are specialized structures at the ends of each chromosome. As DNA replicates, telomeres shorten each time a cell divides. Telomerase in human cancer cells is 10 to 20 times more active than in normal body cells. The increase provides a selective growth advantage to many types of tumors. If telomerase activity was to be turned off, then telomeres in cancer cells would shorten like they do in normal body cells.
"The oft-used analogy is that telomeres are like the plastic ends of shoelaces that protect them from fraying," Dr. Wright said. "Once the plastic becomes damaged and falls off, the shoelace can no longer be threaded effectively. The only solution at that point is to throw the shoelace away."
In most tissues, telomerase turns off during development, after which telomeres shorten and limit the number of times a cell can divide, eventually losing their capping function similar to the shoelace tip falling off. This timing also functions as a tumor-protection mechanism, since the limited cellular lifespan prevents pre-malignant cells from accumulating the mutations they need to become cancerous.
Preclinical studies have shown that inhibiting telomerase causes tumor cells to lose immortality, re-initiate telomere shortening, and eventually die. In the event that a tumor has already thoroughly developed, it may be surgically removed, and following conventional chemotherapy, telomerase inhibition could prevent rare surviving cells from having enough divisions to cause a relapse.
Dr. Wright said the alternative splicing method also could be useful for regenerative medicine, because telomeres in our stem cells shorten with age and that eventually compromises their function. "Under the right circumstances, increasing or decreasing telomerase activity could profoundly affect our treatments for both cancer and aging," he said.
