Moto X gesture-tastic camera app makes cameo in leaked APK

Moto X gesturetastic camera app makes cameo in leaked APK

We already know the camera app for the Moto X (and Droid Ultra, MAXX and Mini) will feature a minimalistic, gesture-based UI, but the clever souls over at Android Police went one step further and recently leaked an APK of the app. The file (later pulled and cached here) installs just fine on many devices but lacks some functionality. We tested it on a Nexus 4 running Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) and it worked okay, mostly. HDR and slow-motion video recording are disabled, panorama mode crashes and Quick Capture (double-twist your wrist to launch the camera) is not operational.

Still, the camera UI is ultra simple -- swipe right for the settings, left for the gallery, up /down to zoom; tap to capture, and hold to take multiple shots. The resulting pictures (16:9 aspect ratio) look pretty much like those snapped with the stock Android camera, and suffer from the same composition issues since the viewfinder crops the right edge of every image. It'll be interesting to see if any of this changes when we finally get our hands on the Moto X next week. Until then, check out the gallery of screenshots below and sound off about the APK in the comments.

Hastings Honors Military Veterans With Breakfast

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - John Graham, who woke up in Korea on his 25th birthday in 1953 to hear the news that the Korean War had ended, was honored with other Hastings-on-Hudson veterans at the village's first Veterans Breakfast on Saturday.

Graham, a lifelong Hastings resident, said he never expected to be at war again after being a U.S, Navy reservist during World War II.

"I got married and shipped out the next day," said Graham as he enjoyed breakfast with a dozen other veterans at the James Harmon Community Center. "I left the reserves and was drafted into the Army right after that for Korea. But having the war end on my birthday was a nice surprise."

Sponsored by the Hastings Recreation Department, the breakfast included more than 40 veterans, family members and others.

"Yonkers does something like this for veterans," Recreation Department Assistant Lisa O'Reilly said. "It worked out that today marks the end of the Korean War, and it's John Graham's birthday. We thought it was a great idea."

Graham said he enjoyed being around old friends who also served, and was reminded of his world at war 60 years ago.

"I'm 85 now," Graham said. "I look back and it's hard to believe how things have changed. But I don't remember anything too good about the wars, except when it was over."

SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA, Spain (AP) ? The driver of a speeding train that derailed in Spain, killing 78 people, said minutes after the crash that he had been going fast and couldn't brake, a local resident who rushed to the scene of the accident said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

Evaristo Iglesias told Antena 3 television that he and another person accompanied the blood-soaked Francisco Jose Garzon Amo to a stretch of flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

"He told us that he wanted to die," Iglesias said.

"He said he had needed to brake but couldn't," Iglesias said. He added that Garzon said "he had been going fast."

The television channel showed a photograph of Iglesias in a pink shirt and cap helping carry the driver after the Wednesday accident in Santiago De Compostela.

It also aired television footage of Iglesias working beside the wrecked train to help other survivors.

Garzon has been released from the hospital and is in police custody on suspicion of negligent homicide. He is expected to give testimony to an investigating judge later Sunday, though he exercised his right to remain silent when police tried to interview him.

The judge will also have access to information contained in the train's "black box," which is similar to those found on aircraft.

The train carrying 218 passenger in eight cars blazed far over the speed limit into a high-risk curve, tumbling off the tracks and slamming into a concrete wall, with some of the cars catching fire.

Authorities have pointed to speed as the culprit, and officials have said that the brakes should have been applied four kilometers (2.5 miles) before the train hit the curve.

Investigators must determine if Garzon failed to apply the brakes or whether it was a technical failure.

Iglesias was among survivors and witnesses who began to give evidence to police on Sunday.

Meanwhile, authorities said forensic experts have identified the last three bodies among the dead. They did not reveal the names of the dead, but said Sunday that all of the families had been notified.

Mourning continued throughout Spain, with Sunday church services being held in remembrance of the dead.

A large funeral mass is planned for Monday afternoon, and the prime minister and royal family are expected to attend.

Rory MacDonald wins UFC on Fox 8 snooze fest over Jake Ellenberger

The co-main event at UFC on Fox 8 was supposed to be a chance for the next welterweight contender to make a statement. The bout between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger figured to be an exciting bout between the two most likely men to fight for the welterweight belt after champion Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks fight. Instead, MacDonald won a decision in a snooze fest.

MacDonald established a jab early in the fight, and continued to use it throughout the bout. He didn't come up with big moves that could finish the fight, though. Instead, he was content to rely on the jab again and again.

Ellenberger played the fight even more cautiously than MacDonald. He couldn't find a way to avoid MacDonald's jab and set up a strike or a takedown. The Division II wrestling All-American couldn't get a takedown until late in the third round. This fight was his big opportunity to get to the championship shot, but his cautiousness kept him from getting the win.

The crowd was unrelenting in their boos, and even UFC president Dana White was disappointed.

"I obviously look to finish fights, but he?s a good fighter, so what can you do? I think I had him worried with the elbows because he didn?t want to come near me after that. That wasn?t my game plan, but I accomplished what I needed to do," MacDonald said after the fight.

Though MacDonald got the win, there is no guarantee he will get a title shot any time soon after that performance. He trains with St-Pierre, and appeared to learn from his safe, but not exciting, approach. At 15-1, he has the resume for a title shot. But will the UFC want to feature him if this is the fight fans remember?

Church opens tornado shelter

Shiloh Christian School recently added a tornado shelter capable of securing 130 students.

Additionally, while the completion of the fifth- through eighth-grade center creates space for new classrooms, with the possibility of an art room, a music room, and a new library, it also includes a new cafeteria/activities facility, all of which students will begin to enjoy during the upcoming 2013-14 school year.

All teachers are certified, and all but one Shiloh educator holds a masters degree.

Former Shiloh students maintain a reputation for academic success after graduating from Shiloh and moving on to high school and college, according to a media release.

?Shiloh taught me responsibility and a good work ethic,? former student Erika Salmon said in the release. ?I was used to getting homework finished and turning it in. I knew how to study hard and study smart. I was ready for pre-AP, AP, and honors courses ? the pre-college resume builders.?

Salmon said she earned a 4.0 grade-point average in high school and graduated in the top 10 percent.

Salmon is currently continuing her studies as a college sophomore and member of the Northeastern State University honors program.

As a non-denominational Christian school, Shiloh offers the opportunity to teach and reinforce Christian values.

?Having taught in the public schools before, I really love teaching at Shiloh,? second-grade teacher Jennifer Crumby said. ?Here, I am given the same opportunity to teach the same standards used in the public schools. The difference is I can openly teach about my Lord Jesus.

There is nothing sweeter to me than to hear the prayer of one of these innocent children talking to their friend Jesus about what is important to them. I would have to say that is one of the many perks of my job.?

The 2013-14 school year begins at Shiloh Christian School on Aug. 14.

Speck Smartshell for MacBook Pro review: Protects your laptop, looks great

You spend all that money on a shiny new MacBook Pro, but what about taking care of it when you take it out of the box? A clip-on case for a laptop is not something I've personally ever considered before, but since all manner of gadgets and gizmos go into my gear bag along with my MacBook Pro Retina, I'm terrified that one of these days something's going to dig a scratch into that gorgeous Aluminum body. And, since I already carry it in my gear bag, a sleeve or full on laptop carry bag didn't seem appropriate. The Speck SmartShell however, did.

It isn't the lowest priced accessory in the world at $49.95 for regular MacBook Pro and Retina versions, and for your money you essentially get something that resembles a smartphone case, but much, much bigger. The SmartShell comes in two pieces that individually clip to your MacBook Pro; one for the base and one for the lid. The piece for the base has all the necessary cut-outs to access the various ports on the sides, and one at the front where you lift the lid. It also comes with some rather large, and rather grippy feet that do a much better job of preventing the MacBook sliding around than the stock feet do. The SmartShell is so thin too, that it adds almost nothing in the way of bulk to your MacBook.

It's the same simple, clip-on affair for the lid too. Just line it up and snap it into place. The neat thing about the lid is that it's ever so slightly translucent, so you're not covering up the glowing Apple logo when the lid is open. That said, when closed it isn't immediately noticeable as a MacBook, another element I'm quite fond of. Close the lid and it looks more like a run-of-the-mill plastic laptop. Much less desirable to wannabe miscreants.

The good

  • Thin enough not to add unwanted bulk
  • Tough enough to prevent scratches to your precious MacBook
  • Doesn't hide that beautiful, glowing Apple

The bad

  • At $50 it's easy to pass it by

The bottom line

Yes, at $50 it isn't the cheapest accessory in the world, but can you really put a price on protecting your precious MacBook? The SmartShell looks good, adds practically zero extra bulk, and keeps all those nasty scratches away. And it looks pretty swell too. Regular MacBook Pro owners needn't feel left out either, because you can get one to fit your laptop too. It's even available in a selection of different, and wilder colors than black, should you be in for that sort of thing.

Japan Economist Makes Rare Call to Tackle Debt

It?s time for Japan to face up to its debts. While Western economists often make this point, when it comes from a Japanese economist, it?s news. That?s because many economists in Japan believe persistent domestic demand for government bonds means there?s no chance of a debt crisis anytime soon.

But Sayuri Kawamura, senior economist at the Japan Research Institute, disagrees. She says that with Japan?s debt mountain more than twice the size of its economy, it must either slash spending by more than half or raise an equivalent in extra tax revenue. The alternative is the potential loss of market confidence in Japan?s efforts to shore up its finances, she says.

Ms. Kawamura is one of only a few mainstream economists in Japan insisting on action now, spelling out the steps Prime Minister Shinzo Abe should take. The institute where she works is a subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, one of Japan?s biggest banks.

?It?s desirable to take advantage of the current solid political footing to discuss how to manage the fiscal situation,? said Ms. Kawamura, noting the resounding victory of the prime minister?s Liberal Democratic Party in Sunday?s election for the upper house of parliament. The win gives Mr. Abe?s coalition control of both chambers, making it easier to pass legislation, including unpopular measures to rein in the debt.

Specifically, Mr. Abe will have to cut government spending by ?50 trillion ($500 billion) by 2020 to bring the debt to sustainable levels in the future, Ms. Kawamura said. That amounts to more than half of Japan?s of ?93 trillion budget for the current fiscal year, or 10% of the entire economy. Alternatively, the prime minister could increase revenue by the same amount or get the same result through a combination of spending cuts and tax hikes.

Over the years, a slew of overseas hedge-fund managers have bought into the idea Japan is about to get slammed by its debt problems, betting against the Japanese government bond market. Over and over they have lost out as Japanese investors have consistently snapped up more than 90% of the debt.

However, Ms. Kawamura says this won?t last.

Her warning is timely. While the recent election result strengthens Mr. Abe?s control of the legislature, it comes ahead of a mid-term fiscal plan to be released in August. It will be the government?s first chance to demonstrate it is really serious about fiscal consolidation.

?Let?s face it. We need ?50 trillion,? Ms. Kawamura said. The figure may look large, but then about a half of Japan?s main budget this year was funded by debt issuance.

The hurdle for bringing the debt down to sustainable levels is very high without resorting to default or capital levy, she says. No major economy allowing free capital flows has ever had a debt of more than 200% of gross domestic product, Ms. Kawamura notes. This means there is no example of nations successfully bringing down such high debt levels by fiscal reforms. But that doesn?t mean it?s impossible, she adds.

Inflation expectations are another aspect of the problem. Over the years, despite fears about the ever-growing debt pile, falling bond yields have let the government refinance its debt at lower costs. But that may change as the government and central bank try to transform Japan?s deflationary mindset. Rising prices generally go hand in hand with rising interest rates.

Under current conditions it would be ?extremely risky? if interest rates start a rising trend, Ms. Kawamura said. She also cautions against complacency among those who say tax receipts will naturally increase as the economy grows. She says higher interest-rate payments on the gigantic debt pile?around ?1 quadrillion?are likely to offset any gains in tax revenues from an economic recovery.

Weiner faces new scandal, now with wife at side

NEW YORK (AP) ? When a heckled, harried Anthony Weiner resigned from Congress and apologized for the explicit text messages that had destroyed his career, a key figure was notably absent: his then-pregnant wife, Huma Abedin.

On Tuesday, there was Weiner again, making a public mea culpa for a newfound sexting scandal that erupted amid the mayoral run he hopes will rewrite his political future. But the Democrat was there to stay in, not bow out ? and Abedin was by his side.

"I love him, I have forgiven him, I believe in him," and the sexting matter is "between us," she said, a message that could prove important to shaping voters' views as they digest his latest admission.

After the gossip website The Dirty posted X-rated text messages and a crotch shot that it said the former congressman exchanged with an unidentified woman, Weiner acknowledged sending such messages as recently as last summer, more than a year after he resigned from the House because of similar behavior with at least a half-dozen women. With Abedin smiling at his side, he said at a news conference that "this is entirely behind me," and both made it clear they were moving ahead with his campaign.

"I want to bring my vision to the people of the city of New York. I hope they are willing to still continue to give me a second chance," a collected Weiner said. Then he went on to talk policy at a candidate forum on gay men's issues, where he was warmly received.

Weiner, 48, has been near the top of most polls since his late entry into the race in May. The latest disclosures could severely test voters' willingness to forgive him. The New York Times, the Daily News and some of his mayoral rivals called on him to drop out of the race.

But Abedin's visible support may help him win voters' approval, too.

"I don't think it's a good sign" that Weiner's behavior continued even after his resignation, said Andrew Taub, 22, who works in the venture capital arena. "But I do believe for some people looking for a sign, for something to bolster his campaign, (the fact that Abedin is staying with him) says a lot."

Still, the disclosure suddenly puts Weiner's indiscretions, judgment and candor back in the forefront of his campaign, and political analysts say it could be damaging: "It makes it tougher to believe this is behind him," said Democratic former state Assemblyman Michael Benjamin, now a political consultant.

And some voters who were open-minded about a second chance may not be able to stomach a third.

"He had a chance to redeem himself, and if he did it twice, he really betrayed the public's trust again," Jeremy Green said. "I think he's past the point of no return."

Weiner and Abedin, however, sought to cast the newly revealed messages as nothing really new. "I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have," Weiner said. In a sign of how much he was projecting taking the messages in stride, he added that he was surprised that more hadn't come out sooner.

Abedin said her husband had made some "horrible mistakes both before he resigned from Congress and after" but insisted she and her husband discussed "all of this" before he jumped into the mayor's race in May. Seeming a bit choked with emotion, she noted that she had chosen to stay in the marriage, but "it was not an easy choice."

Abedin, a longtime adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, has played a large and visible role in Weiner's mayoral campaign.

Weiner said in a July 2, 2012, interview with People magazine that he'd "tried to become a better person" every day since the sexting scandal. And yet the latest indiscretion appears to have started just days after he gave that interview.

The woman involved in newly disclosed messages told The Dirty that she was 22 when she began chatting with Weiner on a social networking site in July 2012, and that their interchanges lasted six months. Weiner used the alias "Carlos Danger," but she knew she was talking to the former congressman, she said.

The exchanges posted on The Dirty consist of sexually explicit fantasizing about various sex acts, and the site ran a pixelated photo of what it said were Weiner's genitals. At one point, the man reported to be Weiner wrote, "I'm deeply flawed."

The woman said Weiner exchanged nude photos of himself with her, engaged in phone sex with her, promised to help her get a job at the political website Politico and suggested meeting in a Chicago condo for a tryst.

"This was a bad situation for me because I really admired him. Even post-scandal, I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him," the woman was quoted as telling the website.

She said he later asked her to destroy the evidence of their chats. She insisted that she never had sex with Weiner or received any payment from him.

The woman said her relationship with Weiner "fizzled" in November 2012. She said she last heard from him this past April, when a New York Times Magazine profile revealed he was eying a mayoral run.

Weiner said not every allegation the woman made was true but that he was not going to dispute specific claims. The lawyer for The Dirty's founder, Nik Ritchie, said his client was ill and would not comment Tuesday.

Weiner said his last sexting exchange happened "sometime last summer, I think," after he and his wife sat down for a glowing People magazine profile in which they said they had gotten past their troubles.

Weiner told the Daily News of New York in May that at one point, he checked into a Houston psychiatric clinic to have his behavior evaluated, but "it wasn't an addiction thing."

Mayoral candidates Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former City Councilman Sal Albanese, both Democrats, and billionaire John Catsimatidis, a Republican, called on Weiner to quit the race: "Enough is enough," de Blasio said. Another Democratic mayoral hopeful, city Comptroller John Liu, stopped short of calling for Weiner to bow out but suggested his "propensity for pornographic selfies is a valid issue for voters."

The other leading Democratic candidates, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and former City Comptroller Bill Thompson, did not immediately comment.

In an editorial posted online Tuesday, The New York Times said, "the serially evasive" Weiner "should take his marital troubles and personal compulsions out of the public eye, away from cameras, off the Web and out of the race for mayor of New York City."

In an editorial Wednesday, the Daily News said: "He is not fit to lead America's premier city. Lacking the dignity and discipline that New York deserves in a mayor, Weiner must recognize that his demons have no place in City Hall."

Who pays for college education? Not Mom and Dad?

Scholarships and grants paid for about 30 percent of college costs in the 2012-2013 academic year, up from 25 percent in 2008-2009.

A new study finds parents are footing a smaller portion of the college tuition bill as families become more cost-conscious. The burden is shifting to the student, who now has to depend on money from other sources to pay for rising college costs ? and many are also finding "free money" to pay for a large chunk of the tab.

According to a new report released Tuesday by Sallie Mae, scholarships and grants have trumped parental contributions as the number one source of paying for college for the first time in four years.

Scholarships and grants paid for about 30 percent of college costs in the 2012-2013 academic year, up from 25 percent in 2008-2009, the Sallie Mae study found. Meanwhile, contributions from parental income and savings dropped from 36 percent four years ago to 27 percent today. Student borrowing has risen four percent in that time and now covers for 18 percent of college costs.

(Read more: Student loan rates at 9% That's a better deal?)

"Student borrowing has leveled off in the past few years, but parent income and savings has come down considerably," says Sarah Ducich, senior vice president for public policy at Sallie Mae. Parents are "just as willing to stretch to pay for college," she says, "but they don't have the money they had pre-recession."

Meanwhile, as parental contributions have declined, "college and universities are stepping up," Ducich says. That may also be another factor that has changed who pays for education costs. "The majority of students getting scholarships are getting them from universities and colleges," she says.

Eric Charity got a free ride from Penn State University and he didn't hesitate to take it - even though the school was not his first choice. Charity had dreamed of following in the footsteps of his older brother and cousins, who graduated from Princeton University. But he changed his mind after being offered a full academic scholarship to Penn State.

"When it was my time, my parents really needed some help financially for me to attend school," he says. If he had gone to Princeton or the University of Virginia, his other top choice, Charity says he "would have been in severe debt." With the university scholarship as well as private scholarship from a local non-profit, Charity paid for tuition, room and board, fees and other expenses (including a new computer and school supplies) for four years with scholarships. He graduated from Penn State in 2010 and earlier this year got his law degree from William and Mary, which he chose in large part due to cost.

(Read more: Most expensive colleges, any way you slice it)

Students and their families are increasingly following Charity's path. "We've seen parents bring their spending down. They're eliminating schools more frequently as they go through the (college selection) process, so that by the end about two-thirds of families have eliminated a school due to cost," Ducich says, referring to Sallie Mae's new report on "How America Pays for College."

As incoming students and their families see recent graduates facing a tough job market, they are also more reticent to spend or borrow great sums of money for college, financial advisors say. "If your college educated kids make less money, then you spend less money on their degree," says Ivory Johnson, founder of Delancey Wealth Management. "If you hear stories about degreed friends who are burdened by student loans, then you borrow less money."

Using that lens, more families are choosing colleges and universities based on cost. It's an encouraging trend, Ducich says. "Making the choice that's affordable not just for the first year but the fourth year as well is so important."

Tips for finding free money for college

Sallie Mae, the nation's largest private student loan provider, offers these tips to help students find more scholarships:

  • Start searching for scholarships as early as possible. You can begin as early as ninth or tenth grade, as scholarships for younger students sometimes have less competition. The key is to start early and renew efforts year after year to take advantage of additional opportunities.
  • Sign up for a free online scholarship search service.Sallie Mae?s free database lists more than 3 million scholarships worth over $16 billion.
  • Expand your search. Not all scholarships will be found online: check with local clubs, religious organizations, employers and your guidance counselor. Local scholarships tend to be less competitive. Also, corporations often award scholarships to their customers or children of employees.
  • Don?t be intimidated by the competition. Scholarship judges look for other qualities such as leadership and volunteerism, and many don?t ask for GPA or standardized test scores. Make sure to showcase commitment and depth with involvement in campus clubs or organizations.
  • Don?t overlook unusual opportunities. Some organizations offer scholarships to highlight interesting career opportunities, hobbies or products. In fact, there are scholarships such as the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award and the Stuck at Prom Duck Brand Duck Tape Scholarship Contest.
  • Search year round. There are many scholarships available all year long, and scholarships due in the winter can have less competition. Treat scholarship searching and applying like a part-time job, as many opportunities come up throughout the year.
  • Watch out for scholarship scams. Scholarship searches should be simple and free to use.

Mike Babcock unofficially named Team Canada?s coach as we prepare for Olympic orientation camp news

This isn't officially official yet, but Sportsnet's John Shannon and Jamie Neugebauer are rolling with it (and Ken Holland will serve in an advisory role under GM Steve Yzerman, ironically enough):

And as Paul noted, USA Hockey will be announcing their Olympic summer camp invites tomorrow:

Obviously, Jimmy Howard will be invited to the camp, and Justin Abdelkader's something of a dark horse candidate.

Due to insurance issues, it's entirely possible, if not probable, that the U.S. and Canada will follow Sweden and Slovakia in not skating at all.

  • Tomas Jurco and Tomas Tatar attended Slovakia's trip to the Tatra National Park near Poprad, Slovakia from July 2nd-4th;

?

  • The Czechs very quietly held a pre-Olympic gathering on the 18th and 19th, and Petr Mrazek took part in the event, but Jakub Kindl wasn't invited;

?

  • Niklas Kronwall, Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Jonathan Ericsson, Gustav Nyquist and Daniel Alfredsson will all take part in the Swedish summer powwow in Stockholm from August 12th-14th;

?

  • And the Russians are actually holding their pre-Olympic meeting in Sochi, Russia on August 23rd and 24th, and you'd better believe that Pavel Datsyuk will be there.

Swimmers from California club win gold at worlds

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? The opening day of the swimming world championships could have doubled for a Trojan Swim Club meet.

American swimmer Haley Anderson, a recent graduate of the University of Southern California, won the first gold medal of the championships in the 5-kilometer open water and USC-based Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia won the men's event.

"It's a great job for the Trojans today," Mellouli said, thanking his American coaches Catherine Vogt, Jon Urbanchek and Dave Salo. "It's an awesome group."

Anderson was on the U.S. team a few times with Fran Crippen, who died during a sweltering 10K race in the United Arab Emirates in October 2010.

"Fran taught us to be great competitors," Anderson said. "We all learned from Fran and take his memory with us to all open water competitions and live like he lived."

The course ran along the docks, giving spectators a good view of the race in sunny conditions in 75-degree waters and air temperature of 86 degrees.

China's Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao won the first diving gold medal, earning Wu a record sixth world title in the women's 3-meter synchronized springboard.

The pair's almost flawless execution of all five dives framed by the dramatic backdrop of Barcelona's skyline gave them the top total score of 338.40 points.

Italy's Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape claimed silver with 307.80, while Canada's Pamela Ware and Jennifer Abel took bronze with 292.08.

Wu has won nine world or Olympic gold medals in the 3-meter synchronized springboard. The only major title to escape her was the 2005 world championship when she didn't compete in the event.

Svetlana Romashina won gold synchronized swimming for the solo technical event. Her standout Russian teammate Natalia Ischenko is taking the year off because she's pregnant.

Huang Zuechen of China took silver, and Ona Carbonell took bronze to give host Spain its first medal of the championships.

Romashina earned the 11th world title of her career, to go with her three Olympic golds.

Down at Barcelona's harbor, Anderson's victory erased the bitter disappointment of missing selection for her favored event.

A silver medalist in last year's 10K Olympic race, Anderson finished only eighth in that event at U.S. trials in May on the same day of her graduation from USC. Her only chance to qualify came down to winning the 5K days later, which she did.

Now she has an even bigger title.

"I didn't walk at graduation and I didn't do well in the 10K so it was a pretty tough day," Anderson said. "But I knew if wanted to make the worlds team I had to win the 5K. There really was no other option. I had to put that race out of mind and just win the 5K. I went for it in that 5K to make the team and I've been focused on this 5K ever since then."

Anderson edged Poliana Okimoto of Brazil in a sprint finish, clocking 56 minutes, 34.2 seconds, 0.02 ahead of Okimoto. Another Brazilian, Ana Marcela Cunha, won a group sprint for third and finished 10.5 seconds behind.

Anderson trains under Vogt at USC, and Vogt is the U.S. open water head coach for these championships.

"She wanted to be out front and be smooth and strong and have some good closing speed and she did exactly what we talked about," Vogt said. "She felt like she wanted to take advantage of her event here."

At last year's London Games, Vogt was on Tunisia's staff and coached Mellouli to gold in the 10K.

Having started purely as a pool swimmer, Mellouli's sprinting ability is what sets him apart in the open water. That was evident as he surged ahead of an elite group of rivals as soon as he got within the ropes outlining the finish area.

"I was hoping they wouldn't stay with me," Mellouli said. "Once I put the jets on I was able to take off, finish the race and take the win."

Mellouli clocked 53 minutes, 30.4 seconds. Eric Hedlin of Canada took silver, 1.2 seconds behind, and five-time world champion Thomas Lurz of Germany finished third, 1.8 back.

Including the open water worlds, Lurz had won the 5K title seven consecutive times.

"I knew in the last 50 meters I would not win," Lurz said. "(Mellouli) swims the 100 free five seconds faster than me or more. This is the problem."

Besides the 10K, Mellouli also took bronze in the 1,500-meter freestyle in London to become the first swimmer to win medals in both the pool and open water at the same Olympics. And he won the 1,500 at the 2008 Beijing Games.

The 29-year-old Mellouli had planned to retire after the London Games but he changed his mind a few months later. He only began training again six months ago.

"This year was supposed to be a year off for me," he said. "So to come back here after a solid two months of training and to be on top of the world is quite exciting for me."

New Orleans Saints, USA Football Instruct Youth Coaches on Heads up Football Player Safety

Photos

The New Orleans Saints and USA Football conducted a Heads Up Football Player Safety Coach clinic on Saturday, July 20, at the Saints training facility on Airline Drive in Metairie.

USA Football instructed more than 20 Player Safety Coaches, representing leagues throughout the state.

The event lasted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and included helmet and shoulder pad fitting, concussion awareness, Heads Up Tackling training and Heads Up Tackling drills. The participants also ate lunch in the Saints team cafeteria.

USA Football hopes the group will now teach Heads Up Football to their youth league coaches, players and parents.

?The New Orleans Saints play such a huge role in supporting youth football in this region that this event was a natural fit for us,? said Saints Director of Youth Programs Jason Trosclair. ?The Saints, the NFL and USA Football do a lot of work on finding the best ways to teach the game to kids.?

Heads Up Football is a comprehensive approach to a better and safer game, encompassing USA Football?s accredited Level 1 Coach Certification Course; Heads Up Tackling techniques; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concussion recognition and response protocols; and instruction on proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting.

Govt Lawyer: NSA Surveillance 'Completely Legal' -- News from ...

Robert Litt, a top lawyer for the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, blasted Edward Snowden for his leaks, insisting they can?t be considered ?whistleblowing? because the covert government surveillance of US civilians ?complied with the law.?

Litt went on to insist that all of the NSA?s surveillance programs are completely legal, and were secretly found to comply with secret interpretations of secret laws by secret US courts.

Since so much of the US legal system is conducted behind closed doors these days, there is no way to either confirm Litt?s assessment nor serious dispute it. The law, nebulous as it has become, is essentially whatever the executive branch claims it is at any given time.

That said, Snowden would?ve had no more access to the ?secret? legal basis than anyone else, and had every reason to believe the NSA surveillance might have been violating the law. Beyond that, there is little dispute that such surveillance is extremely immoral, and uncovering the dirty deeds of the federal government, even if they comply with the letter of whatever passes for the law these days, could still reasonably be called ?whistleblowing.?

Detroit files for bankruptcy, stage set for court fight

By Nick Carey

DETROIT (Reuters) - Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history on Thursday, setting the stage for a costly court battle with creditors and opening a new chapter in the long struggle to revive the city that was the cradle of the American auto industry.

The bankruptcy, if approved by a federal judge, would force Detroit's thousands of creditors into negotiations with the city's Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr to resolve an estimated $18.5 billion in debt that has crippled Michigan's largest city.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said he saw no other options for Detroit and approved Orr's request to file for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.

"Detroit simply cannot raise enough revenue to meet its current obligations, and that is a situation that is only projected to get worse absent a bankruptcy filing," wrote Snyder, a Republican, in a letter accompanying the filing.

Detroit's creditors are expected to face huge losses, and the future of retiree pension and health benefits for thousands of city workers hangs in the balance.

Anticipating the filing on Thursday, investors drove prices of Detroit bonds and notes lower, sending their yields to record highs on Thursday.

In some respects, Detroit's legacy as a model for American innovation is at stake as well. Its crippled condition threatens to overwhelm its image as the home of Henry Ford's pioneering assembly line and Motown's 1960s soul-music hit machine. More recently, the city has become an incubator for efforts to repopulate and reinvigorate an urban relic of a bygone, industrial age.

New York, Cleveland and Philadelphia previously teetered on bankruptcy, but Detroit is the first major U.S. city to go over the edge.

Detroit has lost 25 percent of its population in the last decade, with just 700,000 residents remaining. The ranks of retirees outnumber the city's active workers by more than a 2-1 ratio. With a quarter of its buildings abandoned in some neighborhoods, no other American city has borne the brunt of deindustrialization so heavily.

In his July 16 letter to the governor making the case for a bankruptcy filing, Orr laid bare the scope of the city's decline.

"After decades of fiscal mismanagement; plummeting population, employment and revenues; decaying City infrastructure... Detroit today is a shell of the thriving metropolis that it once was," Orr wrote.

WHITE HOUSE MONITORING

Snyder named Orr in March to tackle the city's spiraling long-term debt, which is estimated at $18.5 billion.

A White House spokeswoman said Democratic U.S. President Barack Obama and his senior team were monitoring the situation in Detroit closely. But unlike after the economic collapse of 2008, in which the federal government injected billions in cash into U.S. auto makers General Motors Co and Chrysler as the first step of a quick turn through a managed bankruptcy process, Obama made no promises this time.

"While leaders on the ground in Michigan and the city's creditors understand that they must find a solution to Detroit's serious financial challenge, we remain committed to continuing our strong partnership with Detroit...," White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage said.

Detroit was once synonymous with U.S. manufacturing prowess. Its automotive giants switched production to planes, tanks and munitions during World War Two, earning the city the nickname of the "Arsenal of Democracy."

Now the city's name has become synonymous with decline, decay and crime. A population that peaked at 1.8 million in the 1950s has fallen steadily since then. Manufacturing job losses and an exodus of white residents to the suburbs, which accelerated after race riots in the 1960s, have left huge swaths of this 80 percent black city blighted and crime-ridden.

Pay cuts and job reductions in the city's police and fire departments have added to the sense of insecurity. Budget cuts have left streetlights broken, fire hydrants out of order, and cop cars and fire trucks badly in need of repair.

The city's murder rate is at its highest in nearly 40 years; only a third of Detroit's ambulances were in service in the first quarter of 2013; and an estimated 5,000 buildings a year intentionally are set on fire.

To compound the challenges, a crime wave in city government has compromised efforts to recover. In just one high-profile case, former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick sits in prison, after he and associates were convicted of public corruption and systematic bid rigging.

The private sector has sought to make inroads against the crushing problems. Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert in 2010 began moving more than 7,000 jobs downtown, and several Detroit-based foundations have begun targeted investment in small local firms, neighborhoods and public schools.

But despite high taxes, the city's coffers have continued to dwindle.

In June, the city's emergency manager, Orr, presented a proposal to creditors offering them pennies on the dollar. His plan had met with resistance from some creditors, most notably Detroit's two pension funds representing retired city workers. The funds recently filed lawsuits in a state court challenging the governor's ability to authorize Orr to file for bankruptcy.

LONG ROAD AHEAD

Creditors are expected to mount a stiff challenge to the bankruptcy, which was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Eastern District of Michigan.

Douglas Bernstein, a bankruptcy attorney at Plunkett Cooney in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, said he expected the case would last one to three years and would be very costly.

"This could run to tens-of-millions to hundreds-of-millions of dollars," he said.

Orr has said previously that he hoped Detroit could emerge from bankruptcy in a year or less. During a press conference in Detroit on Thursday after the bankruptcy filing, he said he hoped Detroit would emerge from bankruptcy by late summer or fall in 2014.

"We are planning to get through this process as expeditiously as possible," said Orr, an experienced bankruptcy lawyer before he took the emergency manager job.

Corporate bankruptcy filings with far less at stake have taken much longer than Orr's targeted timeline. Richard Ciccarone, managing director of McDonnell Investment Management, said it would be a long, drawn out process.

"They're dealing with very difficult issues in which there's not very much court precedent for a major city in this arena," he said.

While thousands of companies have gone through bankruptcy and emerged intact, only a relative handful American cities have made Chapter 9 filings since the Bankruptcy Act was amended in 1934 to include municipalities. The paucity of precedent and sheer number of creditors portend a complicated road ahead.

"It's a very complex landscape and it's one that's going to be watched very closely by municipal investors," said Robert Amodeo, a portfolio manager at Western Asset in New York.

General Motors, the only major U.S. automaker headquartered in Detroit, said in a statement that the company "is proud to call Detroit home and...(this is) a day that we and others hoped would not come. We believe, however, that today also can mark a clean start for the city."

Ford Motor Co, which is based in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, said it was "optimistic that governmental leaders will be successful in strengthening the community."

But Ed McNeil, chief negotiator for a coalition of 33 unions that represent most of the service workers for the city of Detroit said the bankruptcy filing was about "busting the unions."

"I've said all along that this is a power grab," said McNeil. "This is not about fixing the city's finances. It's about the governor and his own agenda to take over the city of Detroit."

Son of Jerry Sandusky seeks to have name changed

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? A son of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is seeking to have his name changed more than a year after his adoptive father was convicted of child sexual abuse.

Matt Sandusky filed papers Tuesday in Centre County Court seeking to have the names of him and his family changed. Though the documents are sealed, they show he filed for a name change, along with his wife and four children.

Matt Sandusky had been expected to be a defense witness until the trial, when he told investigators that he also had been abused by Jerry Sandusky.

Jerry Sandusky was convicted on 45 counts of sexual abuse. He is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence and maintains he was wrongfully convicted. He is pursuing appeals.

Agenda Calendar 4 for iPhone review: One of the best alternative calendar apps just got better

Agenda Calendar 4 for iPhone review: One of the best alternative calendar apps just got better

We took a look at Agenda Calendar for iPhone and iPad back when they were first released and this time, the guys over at Savvy Apps are back with Agenda Calendar 4. This time around they've managed to make a great app even better by cutting unnecessary UI items and adding easy to use gestures.

I've had some time over the past few weeks to use the iPhone version of Agenda Calendar 4 and I have to say that I've come away more delighted than I was with the original version, which was also quite good.

When I first opened the newly updated version of Agenda Calendar on my iPhone, I instantly noticed that a lot of menus and other items that I'd become accustomed to seeing were not along the bottom. So I did what seemed natural, I started swiping and flicking my way through the different screens.

The removal of some of these unnecessary menus made way for you to be able to see more events and details on one screen. That means more of my events filter at the bottom and I have to scroll less in order to view what I'd like. If I want to see a larger list view of my events, I can simply swipe to the left to view an entire list of not only events, but reminders as well.

For those not familiar with Agenda Calendar already, it will pull in from your native Calendar app as well as the Reminders app. If you already use these, there will be virtually no setup required. All of your items will be imported instantly for you. Agenda Calendar can also interact with and share information across many apps such as Omnifocus, Clear, Things, Todo, Due, Drafts, and more.

As far as the different calendar views go, you can swipe left and right between a six month view, single month view, and list view. On the single month view you'll also see your events and reminders aggregate below the calendar.

When it comes to handling reminders, Agenda Calendar isn't yet a full fledged solution. It will simply filter all the reminders in from the native Reminders app. If you need to mark something as complete, you'll still need to use the native Reminders app. If you don't mind just deleting the reminder, that works too but it's more of a workaround than an actual solution. It won't be a viable one for anyone looking to keep a record of reminders they're completed in the past.

The good

  • Already great interface got even better
  • The ability to share across many productivity apps makes it a better solution than the native Calendar if you're already using other todo apps
  • Gesture based interface seems more natural than the old menu style layout, it won't be hard to get used to for existing Agenda users
  • Allows you to view reminders and calendar events all in one place

The bad

  • Reminders management still isn't an all-in-one solution, but it's getting there
  • All reminders are clumped into one group instead of staying in their respective lists

The bottom line

If you use other task apps such as Omnifocus, Todo, or Clear, you may find that Agenda Calendar's ability to share information to other apps and keep everything in sync will make your life just that much easier. It's definitely a better option for these users than the stock Calendar app.

For existing users of Agenda Calendar for iPhone, Agenda Calendar 4 will be a great update and solve some of the tiny frustrations with the interface. It may be a separate purchase but if you really love Agenda Calendar, it's well worth it.
