Changing times: Politicians' tears more common now

It seems out of place: The president of the United States breaking down in tears as he thanked campaign workers for their tireless work for his re-election.

But Barack Obama isn't the only world leader unashamed to be seen crying in public ? or simply unable to avoid it. Attitudes seem to have changed since the early 1970s, when an alleged crying incident during the presidential primary season went a long way toward derailing the candidacy of a Maine senator.

The teary trend has picked up speed in recent years, or perhaps it has just been noticed more often because of ubiquitous TV, still and cellphone cameras. Here are some recent examples:

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

Victorious in his re-election campaign, Obama cried while giving a speech to his campaign staff and volunteers. He told the gathered young people there was no limit to what they could accomplish. The speech touched on his start as a community organizer in Chicago and reflected his faith that his young volunteers and staff would accomplish great things in the decades to come.

It was an emotional side of Obama that had rarely been visible during the long, often negative, campaign.

EVEN STRONG MEN CRY

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a judo fan and hunting aficionado known in part for his physical fitness. But that didn't stop him from welling up in March after he was returned to power in a difficult election battle marred by public protests. It was a break with Kremlin tradition in a country where leaders are rarely seen to show emotions.

A defiant Putin proclaimed that he and his followers had beaten back opponents determined to destroy Russia's statehood and usurp power.

The tears were ridiculed by his political opponents and drew some sarcastic comments from political foes in the United States, but did not seem to harm his standing.

NOT READY TO LEAVE

She was known as a strong, even imperious leader who thrived on power politics and led Britain in the war to recover the Falklands Islands. But the enduring image of Margaret Thatcher's departure from office is the tearful face captured by photographers in 1990 as she left 10 Downing Street for the last time.

The "iron lady" was removed as party leader and prime minister after 11 years in power and replaced by John Major. The crying incident is remembered as offering a rare glimpse into her personal feelings, which were typically kept far from public view.

GOODBYE, MAN FROM MAINE

Maine Sen. Edmund Muskie was a front-runner in the race for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination until he appeared to break down while defending his wife from an attack by an influential New Hampshire newspaper.

Muskie always claimed it was snowflakes, not tears, but the damage had been done. His supposed crying was perceived as a show of weakness and instability, and his campaign never recovered. His rival, Sen. George McGovern, won the nomination, but was later trounced by President Richard Nixon. Although Muskie's presidential hopes were dashed, he later became Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter.

THE WEEPER OF THE HOUSE

As Speaker of the House, Republican John Boehner holds one of the most powerful positions in the U.S. government ? and he cries so frequently that Twitter jokesters have taken to calling him the weeper of the house. He tears up easily, particularly when talking about the American dream.

He's been known to cry at school events or when fielding questions from constituents or when talking about his family. A well-watched YouTube clip captures him choking up with tears when talking about the need to combat terrorism and provide safety and security for Americans.

The 10 Coolest Fictional Pets

fiction pets
YouTube

You might think you have the greatest pet in the world, but that?s probably because you don?t watch much TV. Instead of a cat that secretly hates you, fictional pets can be dragons or loyal household animals who stick by your side as you step out into the great unknown, rather than eating the contents of your bathroom trashcan the second you?re out the door. We?ve compiled a list of the 10 coolest pets in fiction. Just don?t tell your real pet ? they might get jealous that they?re not as awesome as these animal pals, and, if you own a cat, try to kill you in your sleep.

1. Grey Wind, ?Game of Thrones?

grey wind
YouTube

Robb of House Stark, the newly crowned King of the North, is feared not only for his prowess in battle and military strategy, but because of his awesome pet: a viciously loyal direwolf. Grey Wind has no qualms about chomping off a finger or three or?even scaring the bejeezus out of the Kingslayer, Jamie Lannister. Where do we sign up to get one of these wolves?

2. Hedwig, ?Harry Potter?

Hedwig
YouTube

Harry?s adorable snowy owl is way more useful than your terminally suspicious mailman-hater German Shepherd ? she actually fetches Harry?s mail and never complains about the long distances she has to travel. Hedwig is also resourceful ? she tracks down Sirius Black while he?s in hiding without any difficulty. This loyal owl meets a heartbreaking fate in the 7th book, but Hedwig?s memory lives on as one of the most awesome fictional pets. Whoops! Spoilers, guys.

3. Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion, ?Game of Thrones?

dragons
YouTube

When Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen manages to bring back the long-extinct dragons in the season one finale of ?Game of Thrones,? many viewers aww?d at just how adorable they were. While these dragons may look adorable now, they will get bigger and make direwolves seem like those beagle puppies they test shampoo on.

In season two, they destroy a sorcerer who is out to keep the Mother of Dragons and her hatchlings for themselves. Lesson learned: do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, lest you be used as a human torch.

4. Salem, ?Sabrina the Teenage Witch?

salem
YouTube

Who didn?t beg their parents for a black cat as a child after watching ?Sabrina the Teenage Witch?? Kids who couldn?t watch TV, that?s who. Sadly, your average black cat is not a snarky sorcerer trapped in the body of a cat as punishment. Salem was a series regular, and despite his sarcastic demeanor, he would (try to) help Sabrina or give her advice. This furry feline helped change the idea of black cats from being unlucky into cute, adoptable pets.

5. Ghost, ?Game of Thrones?

Ghost
YouTube

Jon Snow?s direwolf is the perfect pet: he?s quiet, and when he escapes he always finds a way to return to his owner. This loyal wolf is also intelligent: Ghost brought back a hand from a White Walker to Jon Snow and his brothers of the Night?s Watch. He also alerted Jon to the presence of another White Walker that would?ve killed him and Lord Commander Jorah Mormont. Why can?t most dogs be as awesome as Ghost?

6. Saphira, ?Eragon?

eragon
YouTube

Unlike Dany?s dragons in ?Game of Thrones,? Saphira can actually communicate with Eragon via telepathy, which makes it easier for the two to defeat the forces of Galbatorix. (What? Don?t act like you?ve never seen ?Eragon.?)

Saphira also has more control over her magic, and she?s pretty creative: she made a glass memorial for Brom to ease her rider?s sorrow. While the ?Game of Thrones? dragons may be a bit more dangerous, Saphira is the easier pet to take care of because she can talk as easily as any human.

7. ?Meeko, ?Pocahontas?

meeko
YouTube

This adorable little raccoon from Disney?s much-beloved hit movie ?Pocahontas? is a protective sidekick and takes a while to warm up to her master?s love interest, John Smith. His inquisitive nature and good-natured theft helps Pocahontas save the day, too: if Meeko hadn?t filched Smith?s compass, Pocahontas would?ve never connected it with her dream of a spinning arrow, and John Smith wouldn?t have survived the clash between the Powhatan tribes and the Virginia Company settlers. Just like happened in actual history. Ask anyone.

8. Gizmo, ?Gremlins

gizmo
YouTube

This adorable little Mogwai is compassionate towards his new human caretakers ? he wouldn?t even eat food left out for him at midnight to avoid turning into a Gremlin. Plus he?s smart ? he knew to open the window blinds to kill Stripe once and for all. Despite the difficulty of owning a Mogwai (no feeding after midnight, no water and no bright light), Gizmo?s intelligence, loyalty and sheer cuteness make him a really awesome pet.

9. Thorn, ?Inheritance Cycle: Eldest?

Thorn
Amazon.com

The ferocious red dragon who is bonded to Eragon?s half-brother Murtagh makes his appearance in the sequel to ?Eragon? and is seriously awesome. Readers may not ?see? him talk much, but his prowess in battle is noteworthy.

Thanks to King Galbatorix enhancing his growth, Thorn is a fit match for Saphira and just as fearsome, especially since he killed Glaedar, one of the oldest remaining dragons. (What? Like you?ve never read the sequel to ?Eragon.?) Thorn does whatever it takes to protect his rider and redeems himself in the end by helping Saphira take down Galbatorix?s dragon, Shruikan.

10. Djali, ?The Hunchback of Notre Dame?

djali
YouTube

Esmeralda?s feisty little goat is one of the best-trained pets in film ever: Djali dances with Esmeralda as part of her act in order to help them make enough money to survive. He?s intelligent and protective too. Djali knows Frodo is bad news and blows a raspberry at him early on in the movie, as well as head-butting soldiers who are after his mistress. It takes him a while to warm up to Phoebus, Esmeralda?s would-be suitor, but as any pet owner knows, animals have a sixth sense, and if they like someone, there?s a good chance that you will, too. Plus, who wouldn?t want to own an adorable pet goat that can dance? You could definitely win the next season of ?America?s Go(a)t Talent? if your pet was as cool as Djali! Yeah. That just happened.

Why You Need Health Insurance

Why You Need Health Insurance

health insurance plans 226

Maybe you have left your job to start your own business, or perhaps you have just moved out on your own and are no longer covered by your parent's health insurance policy. If you are healthy, you may think there is no reason to have health insurance, but you may want to think again.

While having an insurance premium payment due each month may seem like just another bill to pay, many people don't realize how insurance can protect you and your finances if you get sick. As medical treatment advances in technology, this also raises the cost of health care. Health insurance protects you from many of these costs.

Since you normally only pay a small amount called a co-pay when you visit your doctor, health insurance helps to keep down your out-of-pocket expense. If you visit your doctor without insurance, however, the same visit may be twice as high. You are also expected to cover any tests that your doctor orders and will often pay full price for any medications he prescribes. Without health insurance you are not only responsible for all of your medical bills, but you could actually face bankruptcy if you are seriously injured or require extensive hospitalization. Health insurance works to protect you from these kind of risks.

Health insurance offers other benefits as well. An insurance company will typically negotiate lower rates with many of the health care providers that they do business with. As a member of your insurance company's health care plan, you are then allowed access to this network of health care providers as part of your insurance coverage.

A less thought of benefit, but one that is equally important, is that studies have shown that people who are covered by health insurance generally live a healthier lifestyle and get regular checkups. They are also more likely to participate in preventive health care, such as yearly mammograms or prostate checks. Since problems are found quicker, there are often more treatment options available.

Jericho Project Opens Kingsbridge Terrace, New Home to 76 Veterans in the Bronx

NEW YORK, Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?Jericho Project, a leading nonprofit ending homelessness at its roots, today opens the doors to Kingsbridge Terrace, a unique, beautifully designed LEED-certified Veteran Residence in the Bronx, NY, that is home to 76 veterans including those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is the second of two state-of-the-art Veterans Residences built by Jericho in the Bronx enabling veterans to live in affordable, furnished housing and access the comprehensive counseling they need to reenter civilian life with dignity.? This includes services for PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury, job training and family reunification. Along with its Supportive Apartment Program that fast-tracks veterans and their families to safe, outfitted apartments, Jericho is serving some 200 veterans throughout New York City.

"Kingsbridge Terrace delivers the vision we first had in 2006, when we saw the need to plan for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who were homeless or at risk of homelessness," said Jericho Executive Director Tori Lyon.? "Since then our partners from the public and private sectors have helped us make this vision a reality."

Kingsbridge Terrace and Fordham Village, Jericho's first residence in the Bronx completed in 2011, together form the first new supportive housing program dedicated solely for veterans New York in 20 years.? Forty percent of the units at both residences are for low-income veterans from the community, with priority given to veterans who have returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sixty percent are for veterans who have a history of homelessness, substance abuse, and/or mental health issues.

"As we cut this ribbon on this deeply important housing development, we are honoring the promise to our soldiers that we would try to repay them for their brave service and sacrifice when they come home," said Congressman Jose E. Serrano. "Our veterans have done so much for our nation?it's the least we can do to try to help them with housing, services and employment. We applaud the work the Jericho team is doing and thank them for their service to our veterans."

"The great measure of our city and our nation is how well we serve the men and women who risk their lives to defend our freedom," said City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn.? "Our returning veterans need more than just a place to live ? many need help finding a job, access to mental health care, and other critical services.? This state-of-the-art residence will provide all of that, along with a supportive community.? I want to thank the Jericho Project for their continued leadership in serving veterans and other New Yorkers in need."

"Returning home to less than promising living conditions is unacceptable for the men and women who have proudly served our country.? The Bronx cares about our veterans and the Jericho Project provides them with more than just a warm bed at night.? The Jericho Project is a place that provides supportive programs helping veterans get back on their feet and enabling them to slowly acclimate back into society and everyday life, while maintaining their dignity and honor.? Our appreciation and duty to help those in need cannot be overlooked especially at their most critical time," states Councilman Joel Rivera, Majority Leader, New York City Council.

Jericho's Veterans communities are designed to create an environment of wellness, with studio apartments, staff offices, a glass-walled community room and garden and computer center.

Amanda Brown stuns with 'Dream On' on 'Voice'

By Jessica Hopper, Rolling Stone

Tyler Golden / NBC

Amanda Brown performs Monday night on "The Voice."

The Season Three set-up for live elimination rounds on "The Voice"?means that viewers (or "America," as Carson Daly euphemistically says) vote on who makes the top eight, with judges each picking one contestant out of America's discard pile, Go Fish-style.

You could say the stakes were very high Monday night, but they lowered considerably after the final performance of the night because, uh, how to put this delicately:?Amanda Brown?has this thing locked down.?Trevin Hunte?should just pack his knives and go home. That quiet thud you heard across the nation as she strutted across the stage in her leather pants and heels was 12 million jaws hitting the floor as Brown hit the high-note screams of Aerosmith's "Dream On."

More from Rolling Stone: Worst movies of October

There's another handful of shows until the finals but they could just call it now and spare the rest of the contestants their awkward interactions with?Christina Milian?in the Sprint Lounge. Right after Brown's performance, they showed a clip of the evening's highlights, and everyone else paled in comparison, like, "Oh. Yeah. Those guys. Hmm." That heartfelt Goo Goo Dolls song ain't gonna cut it now,?Bryan Keith.?

Power rankings! Only Team Adam and Team Blake performed last night.

More from Rolling Stone: 100 greatest Beatles songs

Coach: Adam Levine
Rank: #1
He's got Amanda, which is kind of the end of that story. It seems likely that "America" might vote Bryan Keith to the next round, despite his snapping problem. For a young man he gesticulates like he's doing his best Dean Martin, a kind of Vegas-ham shtick that works against his whole sensitacho thing. Nevertheless, the crowd wouldn't stop cheering after he surprised by smoldering his way through "Iris."?Melanie Martinez?and her supersized bow seem like they will be a candidate for Adam's "save," despite her underwhelming Betty Boop-esque take on Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack." She should just do "The Good Ship Lollipop" and get it over with.

Coach: Blake Shelton
Rank: #2
Michaela Page?seems likely to be the Team Blake finalist since her voice is flawless and she has a kicky Hot Topic good-girl-in-bad-girl's clothing vibe to her. She made Neon Trees' "Everybody Talks" her own, in the parlance of the show. She is very mannered, posey and practiced, which sometimes gives her a mechanical-cute/"Small Wonder" vibe. She's the big talent on her team, though Blake seems to be real partial to country gal?Liz Davis, who, done up like a Mandrell sister, sold "Independence Day" so well that?Cee Lo?said it made him feel especially patriotic.?Cassadee Pope?should join a Cranberries tribute band upon elimination; sure, it's a lateral move, but it's a perfect use for her talents.?

More from Rolling Stone: Borgore and Miley Cyrus behind the scenes

Best example of what Dracula might wear to the prom:?Cee Lo Green's white satin blouse with pearl broach.?

Best throwback song choice of the night:?Adam picking Lisa Stansfield's 1989 iconic club hit "All Around the World." Here's to hoping he follows it up with Soho's "Hippy Chick" next week. Speaking of, why hasn't anyone done the Smiths "How Soon Is Now?" yet?

Dark horse everyone seems to be underestimating: Julio Cesar Castillo, who did Mariachi classic "El Rey" as traditional as it can be done and got a standing ovation for it. One imagines every proud abuela in the country speed dialing in votes for him the second he finished. America is in charge now, and it's best not to underestimate the mariachi loyalists.

Which performance did you think was the best on Monday night? Tell us your pick on our Facebook page!
